The logistics department may have gotten a little carried away by Claes's request for a larger spade
That's a JCB HMEE,they opened a production line in the US to build them and also open up the US civilian contractor market, seems half the guys running it are also shipped in from the UK to get the factory running, its got 4 wheel drive and steer, antilock brakes, armoured cab and a top speed of 55mph so it doesn't need a truck to transport it and its designed to drive straight onto a C-130 !

Now in writing Charlie's brother Andy, I realize the more gruff of the Montagne twins isn't as much a 'car guy' as Charlie (who is known to 'appropriate' cars that strike his fancy/serve his purpose), but if there was a car that suited him, I think outside any high-Euro Italian options, the Lotus Carlton is the car that fits his image the most. I mean, look at it:
The slight fender flares, aggressive-yet-subtle body kit, and the black-in-direct-light imperial green body color (the only color you could get it in) give it the look of something that perhaps an East End mob boss might be seen in--and therefore one would be wise to move out of the way lest they lose some teeth or their kneecaps. The 377bhp twin-turbo I-6 also gives it more than enough hustle to be a decent getaway car, and a self-leveling rear suspension comes in handy for when the body in the boot is a big one or there's a lot of ill-gotten currency being hauled about, or there's enough firepower to overthrow a Latin-American dictatorship in it. And when Andy feels like a drive, the car handles well enough and is even a bit on the lairy side, allowing much opposite-lock tomfoolery, but not so much that the rear end will easily overtake the front wheels. As described in Hammond's article, it's like an armed bodyguard--discreet, featureless, possibly even understated, but highly capable of bringing on violence on a whim-- just like Andy, in some respects.

As much as I'd love to agree with you on the image, I actually know people with these things... and they're not yobbish, tough, fast or hard. In fact my greatest memory of them is making me very angry for driving at a steady 95kph in front of the support vehicle I was driving, which, at the time, was a decade old Disco (Lauro style) with a camper trailer on the back. It needed a good run-up at hills and they were resolutely refusing to speed up so that could happen, and every time I slowed down to give myself some space they slowed down as well.MP5 wrote:Now in writing Charlie's brother Andy, I realize the more gruff of the Montagne twins isn't as much a 'car guy' as Charlie (who is known to 'appropriate' cars that strike his fancy/serve his purpose), but if there was a car that suited him, I think outside any high-Euro Italian options, the Lotus Carlton is the car that fits his image the most. The 2013 really does look good, and though I know a lot of people may disagree with me, I actually don't mind that particular form or wood trim either.
I'm also going to hazard a wild guess and say they've put air suspension on the 2013 model? It looks a lot lower/has less "dead cat space" (space between the tyres and the wheel arches) than the previous one in the pictures. I assume it can jack itself up then for going off the tarmac.

Re: OC Dream Garage
I'll be honest here: this is one of the few instances where I've looked at the estate version of a fast car and gone "not sure if want". It looks... bulky... from some angles, particuarly the front three-quarter view, almost R-class bulky. Part of what I liked about the original Ballistic Bannana was how well it hid its size.
I think half the estate's problem though is how damn good the hatch (sorry Merc, I don't care what you tell me: it's a big hatchback) looks. Frankly, I'd still have that version... though if someone offered me the estate I wouldn't say no either.

Evidently it's just an A4 Avant with some body cladding. Audi admits the vehicle is not designed for off-road use and does not have adjustable suspension or low-range gearing.
So I guess we need to look at a BMW X1?

Re: OC Dream Garage
Well, that's problematic. The 2010 model I gave J+M only has high range as well, so that's not an issue for what they use it for... however the ground clearance is.Kiskaloo wrote:Evidently it's just an A4 Avant with some body cladding. I did look at the X1 actually, but it lacks a spare tyre... kind of an issue the places J+M go. The Q3 is short on boot space, but a Q5 or Range Rover Evoque might be options... part of me has seriously considered letting them have a full-blown Range Rover next as well... though by the same token if I'm biting the bullet and going up to something Range Rover size then there's always the A6 allroad: which does have air suspension.
We'll see. I'm yet to make up my mind as to what Jethro does regards cars: does he keep the current one and maintain it well because, with the modifications it has, he can't really get rid of it onto the second hand market (not to mention the chances of it leading back to him)... or does he switch cars every two years, simply because of the miles the fratello does? *shrugs* Something I'm still working out, because if it's the latter then in my own story timeline he's getting ready for a change.

Despite earlier concerns it appears the A4 Allroad does get some extra ground clearance... it just wasn't evident in the pictures so we didn't pick it (I'm assuming some photoshop monkey missed the point when doing the publicity shots).Kiskaloo wrote:Evidently it's just an A4 Avant with some body cladding. If I may say so, given how frequently his fratello discards equipment, Jethro doesn't seem to be someone who would be too sentimentally attached to his vehicle. My impression is that the car is a practical asset, but that doesn't necessarily mean disposable: practical assets should maximise their efficiency; ease of use and familiarity with its handling is also an element of efficiency and practicality. Altogether then he would maintain the car for as long as he could, repairing and updating it, and wouldn't actively go looking to discard it. He wouldn't abandon the Audi unless he absolutely had to - but if he did have to, it would be simply parked up and left to rust with no lingering regrets... provided he saves the CD rack first.

Good points all, and no: Jethro is not the sort of person to flick something simply because it's last year's model (though I'll admit from an author/artist styalistic perspective, there is a certain urge to keep J+M in the latest vehicle for maximum glamour).Robert Frazer wrote:If I may say so, given how frequently his fratello discards equipment, Jethro doesn't seem to be someone who would be too sentimentally attached to his vehicle. My thinking is more around reliability and maintinence than anything. On the one hand: yes, Jethro has the current car sorted to his liking and has some comforting, reliable miles on it. However: the car does cover long distances and doesn't exactly lead an easy life... sometimes stored in a container for months, or travelling as deck cargo. I don't think too many softroaders could expect to have to slink cross-country over the Egypt-Libya border under cover or darkeness; climb rutted tracks in Central Anatolia; visit the northern reaches of Siberia or crawl through equatorial jungle either... with all the garbage quality fuel that comes with it. That eventually begins to wear.
Since the fratello's lives rely on the Audi being reliable... the question raises again: does Jethro fastidiously maintain it: doing major services every time he's in Rome and then some... or does he flick it and get a new one before all the hard miles become an issue? I still haven't worked out an answer.

You know, when we were shown the new Range Rover I wasn't entirely certain on the styling. The thing about a Range Rover is that it should work anywhere, whether that be lugging around trees and chainsaws on an estate, in the desert. or pulling up at a red-carpet event in Monaco, and I wasn't sure the new, sleeker styling could do that.
Then someone took shots of it in the middle of a Morocco street:
Sold.
And now I yet again find myself considering one for J+M... until I remember that some countries make smaller aircraft carriers.

And yes, I like the new Range Rover, though I think I'd still buy the Evoque.

Two years after their stunning Ciel Concept, Cadillac is at it again with the new, equally stunning Elmiraj Concept.
Cadillac used to be known as "The Standard of the World" and while they certainly lost their way in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, putting these "halo" cars into production could hopefully revitalize the brand in a way similar to how the new Phantom family of vehicles has done for Rolls-Royce (whom also, IMO, lost their way in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s).

Very nice but, to be honest, I think I prefered the Ciel (yes, despite my usual aversion to drop-tops on GT comfort and practicality grounds)... because to me, that was what a Cadillac was supposed to be: a huge car for wafting with the top down.

The '79 Cadillac Milan was nice and the Brougham too, me thinks.

I know this is old, but it's something for a certain 5-foot explosives-addled petrolhead redhead. Almost 700 hp.
Don't worry, the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution XI is coming. Potentially as a 500-hp hybrid. Worthy for one Jim Eligino. http://www.motorauthority.com/news/1085694_next-mitsubishi-evo-to-be-500-horsepower-gt-r-rival-report

I was under the impression that Elio was more for the sedan variant; which fortunately has also now been released.Kiskaloo wrote:Not a fan of the color, but the design is growing on me: New BMW M4 Coupe

What does interest me about this is that the new M3 is now powered by a turbo six. Hopefully that means that some bright spark at M-division will decide to cram that same donk under the 2-series' bonnet once it's released.
That said: if one were in the market for a fast, everyday saloon car, there would be not insubstantial temptation to go with a Volvo S60 Polestar; which notably is also now available in estate format...
...that means it's a fast Volvo estate, which has it making a serious case for "coolest thing currently available to buy right now". Not to mention that there's a new C-class coming next year (I think), which means a whole new brace of AMG models.
Also, what is it with Smurf Blue being the current hero colour for damn near everyone at the moment? Volvo gets a pass as it's sort of Polestar's livery, but the rest of them...

As an aside, the local Audi dealer has an A4 Allroad in the showroom right now, and it does indeed have the extra ride height it's supposed to.Alfisti wrote:Despite earlier concerns it appears the A4 Allroad does get some extra ground clearance... it just wasn't evident in the pictures so we didn't pick it (I'm assuming some photoshop monkey missed the point when doing the publicity shots).Kiskaloo wrote:Evidently it's just an A4 Avant with some body cladding. Audi admits the vehicle is not designed for off-road use and does not have adjustable suspension or low-range gearing.
Now, if I could just figure out a way to justify making them an offer on it...

On a slightly different note: here's Henry Catchpole (who I often think would make a decent real-life Jethro, even if he's a bit too softly spoken), driving an F-type through Romania.
Given the opportunity, I'm sure Jethro wouldn't turn the trip down either.

The Series 1 Land Rover may have serious competition for the role of J+M's next "adventure" vehicle...
Either that, or Titty (I'm afraid the name seems to have stuck) is about to find herself in North Africa.
Twin engine, 4x4, 2CV. I must have one.

I doubt this would make Elio give up on his 4-door M3, but it's definitely something I would buy!
New Focus RS due in 2016.
Different articles have conflicting reports on whether it will be fwd or 4wd.

Looks good. Hope it is AWD otherwise the torque steer will probably be heinous.
Speaking of AWD hotness, I took a ride in a friend's new AMG E63 Station Wagon (the turbo 5.5, not the NA 6.2).
Have to say I was as impressed as Jezza was when he pitted it against the M5 Estate and a fair bit more practical than pretty much everything in Michele's garage...

Eh, most of the front-drive Euro hot-hatches do a pretty good job of taming the torque steer these days, even with ludicrous amounts of power going through the front wheels.Kiskaloo wrote:Professor Voodoo wrote:I doubt this would make Elio give up on his 4-door M3, but it's definitely something I would buy!

I know the local hot-ford group has been pretty excited about this one (don't ask me how I'm part of that, I've not worked out out either), and rightly so too.

Re: OC Dream Garage
Wow... all these elegant and expensive dream cars... while Rolito is perfectly happy with a Toyota RAV4 CUV that dates back to the Nineties (his only requirement? It should be electric blue) and Masakari will never swap out her battered hand-me-down Vespa scooter for anything newer or fancier. Maybe I (and by extension my OCs) are old-fashioned.
At least the RAV4 has an EV version that runs on electricity. Only 328 ever sold in 2002. Rolito was probably one of those three-hundred-plus buyers, and he would have snapped up at least two. He'd lovingly upgrade his car/s over the years with the latest tech, even Black Tech. Because one can be a terrorist AND an eco-friendly person WITHOUT being an eco-terrorist.

I do love a Range Rover, but I just can't get my head around it with big rims and a petrol engine.
That said, the inside looks nicer than, well, than my apartment, easily. Most places of residence I've been to actually...
