I'd have been just as happy mowing down some zombie hippies or undead telemarketers, but they never cater to that. I'm just saying diversify.Officer_Charon wrote:Dude. It's zombies. Who are Nazis. Two things GUARANTEED to have an audience ready to kills them.

Actually, an unlockable map called "Five" (by cheat or by campaign completion) features office zombies, scientist zombies, and American MP zombies, and one playable character who often expresses his hatred of hippies and sometimes calls the zombies as such .
And btw, the playable chars on that map are......ahh go find out yourself.

I just finished Yume Nikki yesterday. Wow. That is easily the strangest game I've ever played. It's also the most poetic. I loved every minute.

Re: Vidya games!!
After weeks of playing, an hour at a time (my work and home schedule allows for VERY limited gaming time), I FINALLY completed Mass Effect 2 with my imported Shepard from ME1. Full Paragon, limited Renegade, No One Left Behind (FTMFW).
Now I just have to wait... another 11 months+ for ME3... *cries*
Ah well... time to start slogging through Dragon Age, then...

Re: Vidya games!!
They should make a version of ME3 that is compatible with Mass Effect 2 files that have Shepherd dead. I would love to see "The Revenge of Joker"
EDIT: Actually, considering there is just one way for Shepherd to die, you wouldn't need to import any files. Hey, is there a way to kill everyone BUT Shepherd?

Re: Vidya games!!
Not sure... from what I've uncovered, it's either 1 or 0 - if Shepard is alone, Shepard dies. *shrugs*
From the buzz that I've been hearing through the jungle drums, ME3 is going to offer a LOT of flexibility, based on what happened in the first two... but if Shepard died, that's that.
http://masseffect.wikia.com/wiki/Mass_Effect_3
edit: for checking facts and realising that I was talking out of the side of my mouth...

Re: Vidya games!!
I've been playing Alpha Protocol lately. I like most of the game, but can see where the balance and skill set is a point of complaint.
I also have been playing Wing Commander: Saga. Not to be confused with WC: The Kilrathi Saga (which was WC 1-3 redone for windows), WC:Saga takes place in the last few months leading up to the events of WC3 and the end of the Kilrathi war.
It's still a work in progress, as it seems the devel team wants to get in some live-action clips and probably some story-arc choices to pay homage to the originals. They released a "prologue" gameplay demo, and it's fantastic. They use a stand-alone version of the Freespace2 engine, but they've incorporated the contemporary ships (look great), weapons, and even the Kilrathi taunts and deaths from WC3!. Being in the FS2 engine, the controls are a little different than WC, but they still make sense.
Anyone wanting to play a new Wing Commander game, try here and click on the "prologue (win) or (mac)" link.

Re: Vidya games!!
Despite my persevering reluctance to do so; I finally broke down and bought Earthworm Jim HD from PSN.
Suffice it to say, this is a dead on port of the original. The redone levels and animations look spectacular and give me the tickle I felt when first picking up this game for my Genesis(that's Mega Drive to everybody outside of North America).
However; while the graphics are top notch, the sound delivery is where this game really falters. The redone voices of the original sound effects are a nice touch, but the extra sound effects and added voices are just distracting in a bad way. My main beef though is with the soundtrack.
Tommy Tallarico's classic arrangement is arguably his greatest work; especially when given free reign when mixing the PCCD and Sega CD versions thanks to the robust nature of the (then) new CD media compared to it's bit cartridge counterpart. While VG newcomer Diego Zaldivar attempts to bring a newer electronic vibe to the soundtrack, it somehow just doesn't fit and at times seems outright out of place.
For comparison I invite you to listen to the Sega CD Special Edition version of my personal favorite track from the game and compare it to the new HD Remix.
Sega CD Special Edition
PSN/XBLA HD Remix
All in all it is still an enjoyable game, but the added quirks seems to actually lessen the experience. I recommend this game if you haven't experienced it before, but if possible track down a Sega CD or PCCD versions.

Stumbled upon this completely by accident:
http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2011/01/21/exclusive-duke-nukem-forever-has-a-release-date.aspx
I remember the days when Duke Nukem was the epic, unrivaled anti Doom-N-Gloom of FPS. Sure, it was a violent mess of bullshit, burnt cordite, testosterone and tits, but to be honest, there are some days when that's just what I need in a game. Those amazing days appear to be back. This is shaping up to be one of the great 'blow off steam, have fun with the boys' games of all time. Just look at the collectors' edition, for crying out loud:
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/91RhsaY52aL._AA1500_.jpg
If I play this game and don't hear the immortal "I'm here to kick ass and chew bubblegum, and I'm all out of bubblegum"... I swear, I'm going to punch the nearest person in the balls.
The king is back. Hail to the king.

And hell yes on Diablo III. So looking forward to playing the hot Asian sorceress.
Along with "Damn...I'm looking good!" and "Shake it, baby!"
Of course, his best line is when he gets to the radio station:
"You're listening to Kay Tee Eye Tee - KTIT. Bringing you the breast, I mean best, in music."

Is there a descriptive word for vapor-ware that eventually comes out and kicks all ass? I don't know it if there is. We should just start calling it being 'Duked'.

Re: Vidya games!!
Me thinks the JP game will be a cinematic adventure game, like the new 'Back to the Future' game. Same studio, same engine.
No new ideas in Hollywood now, so the major players have to rehash whatever they have to make money.
And 'Trespasser' was the definitive Jurassic Park shooter game, even if aspects of it sucked and weren't finished

As a fan of Okami, I'm surprised that you haven't been all over MvC 3 yet.

This might be old news to some of you, but have any of you seen the one level Call of Duty parody Epic released for free as part of their marketing campaign for Bulletstorm?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eE_msAKWdOs&feature=related
I'm actually wondering if it might be worth their while to consider making that into a full game.

I remember when that came out. It's makes pretty accurate fun of things that make Call of Duty what it is. However, the gameplay is so crappy that I wouldn't touch the game with a 10 foot electronic pole.Piero wrote:This might be old news to some of you, but have any of you seen the one level Call of Duty parody Epic released for free as part of their marketing campaign for Bulletstorm?

Well if they made it into a full game they would obviously need to spend more time on the gameplay than they did for a marketing ploy like that. And it is an open question as to whether they could actually manage to make the humour work for an entire game. But I think it has potential. Just imagine if the game sometimes threw in a sudden bout of realism out of the blue (for instance you seem to be in one of those jeep chases where you have unlimited ammo... then halfway through you run out, your commander chews you out for being trigger happy, and you have to get off and continue on foot in order to survive).

Just got Devil May Cry 1 and 2 for 5$ each. I got the first one years ago and it was too scary for me to play, so I gave it back to GameStop. After playing Left 4 Dead 2 and seeing the entire Saw franchise I thought I could play it again. Still creeped out, but I play better now! >:3 Dante's hot, so I can get though it!! <3

But, I don't care. I didn't even know what Duke Nukem was until Forever got supposedly "canceled for good."

The day it's finally released will be the day Duke Nukem Forever died. The main charm of the game now is the fact that it's taken forever to be released.

LOL Five_X I love reading your posts now.
I had heard (locally anyways) that it was very good. Those who have played it say its focused more on combat then your usual questing RPG, but I havent tried it yet myself.

Re: Vidya games!!
DA2 does have its good qualities. Among them are, of course, simply stunning visuals, an admittedly clever story-telling mechanic and, contrary to what you've apparently heard, theprodigalson, an almost ridiculous amount of side-questing to do. It took me almost my entire first week playing it just to get through all of the side-quests available in Act 1.
The bad qualities, however, out-shine anything good that Bioware managed to put together. Virtually every single RPG element has been dumbed down to the point of condescension. As you stated in your post, the game's focus is very much more on the combat. Now I wouldn't mind this, except for the fact that the game is almost designed around the idea that your main character, Hawke, is God. No questions. Regardless of what class you choose, Hawke will, hands-down, be superior in that role than any other party member. This is most obvious if you make Hawke a mage. If you do, it's pretty much mandatory that he/she be a healer, as Hawke has the best healing magic in the game.
What makes the other party members themselves even weaker is the fact that you can't outfit them with equipment beyond weapons and accessories, like rings and amulets. Each extra character has their own unique outfit that can't be changed. Occassionally you can find items that ugrade the equipment, but aside from that their are stuck with the same defensive stats as what they start with.
The item system itself utilizes a "5 star" rating that I find completely unneccessary and, frankly, kind of insulting. Based on your character's class and level, each piece of equipment is ranked from 1-5 stars, based on how "appropriate" and "effective" it is for your character. As if I'm too stupid to read the items' stats and figure out for myself whether this new sword I just picked up is better than the one I'm using. What am I, a four year old?
In short, if you're not that much into the RPG genre of games, you'll probably find nothing wrong with DA2. But for those like me, who very much are and very much enjoy the detailed complexity that a good RPG offers, the horrendously watered-down aspects makes DA2 a dismal failure. Especially considering that the DA franchise is specifically marketed as a "tactical RPG".

Re: Vidya games!!
Yah from what ive read Dragon Age 2 is a totall letdown from, even to the point that your decisions in the game don't make a damn differance...Let those that haven't played through it find out why. In the first one your choices made massive impacts on how the story ended, from what Ive heard this is not the case with the 2nd one, this was a huge selling point of dragon age: Origens.
Also if I want to play hack-n-slash, what they seemed to turn the new Dragon Age into, I can think of better engins for it Like Torchlight or Diablo 1 2 and hopefully 3
This seems to be a common trend lately Dumbing down games to its Detriment, Dragon Age to this, Elder Scrolls 3 to Elder Scrolls 4 (damnit I liked the fact I could mix and match my armor down to the pauldrens.) It seems these game companies need to be reminded that people who normally play RPGs and Tactical Based games arn't stupid or need things dumbed down, Keep the Dumbing down to Hack-n-Slash and shooters please.

Re: Vidya games!!
I loved Dragon Age: Origins. It had the same sort of spirit that went into Baldur's Gate (though nothing will ever reach that plateau).
Then Dragon Age 2 came around and I immediately knew they had "fixed" what wasn't broken. Another franchise gone down the road to simplification and mediocrity. I give them a pass on Mass Effect, but only because it's one of the best fleshed out and I forgive a space opera becoming more action-y than a "ye olde tyme" fantasy.

Re: Vidya games!!
The problems with DA2 become glaringly obvious when you look at the circumstances in which it was created. DAO was announced 5 years before it was released, much of that time was spent in development. Granted, the length could mostly be contributed to the fact that they were creating an entirely new game engine, but that's still quite a while to spend on a game, and the result was pretty darned good, even when compared to the RPG classics of the 90s. In comparison, DA2 was announced only a few months after the original came out, and EA expected Bioware to be able to overhaul the original and create a comparable game with only about a year's development time, simply not something any studio, no matter how awesome, could do.
That does not mean Bioware is blameless, however. There are some things which seemed inexcusable, like making the majority of choices inconsequential. In DAO you could play the game 5 times and get 5 completely different Fereldens, but in DA2 you might be able to get 2 Kirkwalls, both of which look very similar to the point of being indistinct. Many of the problems are the additions, not the fact that they didn't have enough time. They could have easily added more choice and consequences to the game simply by not doing some of the things they did.
The only thing that sort of makes me want to play it again is the fact that Bioware makes classes that are very fleshed-out to the point where simply playing a different class can really change how the game is played. If only the other glaring problems weren't there, it would have been just as if not better than DAO.
