Re: The 2012 Summer Olympic Games Discussion Thread
so far, one athlete sent home for racist tweets
the wrong flag put up next to the North Korean women's football team
one GB team members identified as English when he is Welsh
Mitt Romney suggesting that there's little support for the games in the UK
G4s failing to do its job and hire and train enough staff leading to several thousand soldiers being drafted in, many of whom have just returned from Afghanistan and are soon to be made redundant, still they could always get a job with G4s !

Checking the weather on BBC, looks like it will be dry for the Opening Ceremonies that are just now kicking off.
Having been fortunate enough to attend the greatest (Beijing 2008) and second-greatest (Sydney 2000) Opening Ceremonies, I'm interested to see what Danny Boyle has on offer later tonight (NBC is tape-delaying it and I am not sure if CBC has it live as I don't see it on their web schedule).

They're starting the Parade of Nations, so time to go to bed and finish it in the morning, but I will say that so far, the Opening Ceremonies have been a lot better than I expected.

So ,disqualification for four teams in the Badminton, apparently they wanted to avoid each other in the next round of the round robin contest and would face easier teams if they lost and so tried to lose deliberately ,they have been booted out for unsportsmanlike conduct not in the spirit of the games !

Women's Volleyball
- Spoiler:
As opposed to their performance in Badminton, China showed up for their match with the United States. While they were defeated 3-0, that the final score was 31 to 29 is a reflection of how hard they fought, successfully defending against 5 US match points before going down against the 6th.

Re: The 2012 Summer Olympic Games Discussion Thread
Is it me, or does it seem a little out of the spirit of the games to whine about athletes not getting a Gold? That's what's happening down here in Australia. Bloody media deosn't think that a Silver or a Bronze is enough, it has to be Gold or they'll do a full cover sotry about how upset and disapointed you, talking about how you were robbed or some nonsense. On top of that, the media is complaining that Australia is only 15th. I think that's pretty good considering how many countries are competing. Prabaly happens because Australian's have too much pride in thier sport.
I had heard snippets of that story, but nothing fully. About all I had been able to piece together was that they had thrown the game. Not cool.

This story probably helps to illustrate that attitude.
You see, I have a lot of family in Australia - one of my aunts married a Qantas head steward and, one by one, her sisters visited her in Port Hacking, thought "ooh, this is lovely" and moved out to follow her. A few years back, I went visiting myself. My cousin was five years old at the time, and I attended her school sports day. At five years old, she was competing in the discus, the shot put, and the hurdles.
In a British school sports day in my area, they're cancelling the egg-and-spoon race because it's "too competitive".
...I'm astounded that Team GBR even tables, let alone wins any medals.

As low as it is to throw a game on purpose to get a better draw, the bracketing for some of these sports (not just badminton) is pretty screwed up. When your path to the medal rounds becomes easier if you lose, that's a problem.
Also, we had the first person from the US to win in the sport of Judo today.

And I imagine Health & Safety requires rubber gloves and Wellingtons so none of the kids get egg yolk on their hands or slip on egg whites.

Evidently in prior Olympics, it was direct elimination rounds for badminton, but they went with this new format for 2012 to ensure each team had at least three matches.

Per NBC, this leaves only eight Olympic sports the US has not medaled in at least once during the modern Games, but they did not mention which ones they are.

A quick Google search brings up 7 sports between the winter and summer games, Biathlon and Nordic Combine for the winter games, and Handball, Table Tennis, Rhythmic Gymnastics and Badminton. If I were to harbor a guess at an eighth it would probably be the Modern Pentathlon.

With the end of the Swimming events today, the US took 16 of 32 possible Gold Medals - the most since the 1984 games in Los Angeles. US swimmers also set 5 World Records.

I saw the British Women's Soccer team lose to Canada in the knockout round and then the next day saw the men lose to South Korea, both big upsets. The Men's game was particularly fun to watch because of the double ET and penalty kickoff, which is very rare in the Olympics. But I suppose winning a bunch of golds in a day makes up for it. The US has taken just one gold in fencing in Beijing, with Mariel Zagunis having her miracle run in the Women's Individual Sabre, a competition she was knocked out of this year. It seems like US is becoming a legitimate competitor in the sport again.

One of the criticisms I've heard is that NBC is only giving coverage to sports that US athletes have a chance of winning. In effect they are covering the Americans...not the Games.Awinnell wrote:Is the NBC coverage as bad as a lot of people are saying ?
I haven't seen much (only one television out here on ship), only a few events here and there, but from what I've seen the criticism is completely true & justified.

I haven't seen much (only one television out here on ship), only a few events here and there, but from what I've seen the criticism is completely true & justified.
You can understand a certain amount of home team bias, everybody does that, but surely the competition is what is important, how can you tell how good your team is if you don't get to see the opposition ?

NBC has I believe five channels carrying The Games: NBC, NBC Sports, MSNBC, one channel that only covers Olympic Boxing and one channel that only covers Olympic Soccer. There have also been some events on BRAVO.
I've DVR'd over 100 hours of coverage so far and I have seen plenty of events that the US had no real chance in. I've also been able to follow plenty of events in many sports between other country's teams and athletes.
The main gripes I have heard is how NBC handles their prime time coverage of major events to keep the outcome unknown, even though those events happened much earlier in London. During the Team Gymnastics Gold Medal Event, one of the Russians crashed and burned, so the American women were guaranteed the Gold. NBC, however, edited that out and also refused to show the Russian scores (since you could add them up and know the Russians didn't have enough points). This hasn't always gone to plan, however - just before NBC televised the 800 m freestyle, they ran a commercial for The Today Show that spoiled Katie Ledecky's gold medal in the event.

Re: The 2012 Summer Olympic Games Discussion Thread
I find myself frustrated sometimes with the NBC coverage as well, although I don't think it's been "bad" because I don't think it could be done that much better. Sure, I may love watching fencing or shooting sports more than volleyball and water polo, but NBC doesn't know that and even if it did their broadcasting doesn't revolve around me. Although I do see them playing a lot of volleyball in particular.
But I also have 6 different HD channels to watch the Olympics on, 2 of them dedicated to nothing but Soccer and Basketball respectively. There's also the time difference to contend with, which while annoying is much better than it was for the Beijing broadcast. I suppose a valid criticism can be made that they should be showing more non-US medal matches, but they usually have to choose between showing a full replay of a medal match the US is not competing in or showing a live match of an event the US is competing in.
There's just a metric crapton of events and most people are either asleep or driving to work when a lot of them are going on... so they do the best they can, I think. But they should cut it out with volleyball. The women aren't THAT good-looking.
It's also why I like watching the Winter games perhaps more than the summer, because there's less events you can follow each event more closely and watch a strong majority of the medal competitions, and watch events like Biathlon that probably wouldn't be covered if there were 20 other events going on at the same time. And Curling isn't really all the boring once you get the gist of it.

Yes they have shown a ton of Women's Beach and normal volleyball (switching between US vs. CZE on Beach and ITA vs. RUS on Court right now ), but the South Korean court team is pretty cute and their Captain has a hell of an arm.

It no doubt helps that the BBC is funded by license fee payers, not advertisers.
NBC does have one 3D HD channel.
