Andy Griffith has died at 89 and it looks like CERN might have sufficient evidence to declare at a new conference tomorrow that they have discovered the Higgs Boson.

Today, Allison and Kara likely put together a temporary memorial in the SWA parking lot and shed tears for the loss of one of the greats. Rest in peace, Sergio Pininfarina:

So, it looks like for all intents and purposes it is the Higgs, at least to a probability that will satisfy everyone except particle physicists.Kiskaloo wrote:...it looks like CERN might have sufficient evidence to declare at a new conference tomorrow that they have discovered the Higgs Boson.
This makes me quite excited though because, in the imperfect logic (and minimal actual knowledge of how this all works) of my brain, it goes something like this: Higgs Boson = Higgs Field = Something measurable for mass and intertia which can then be eventually manipulated = Inertial compensator... somewhere along the line this has to be related to gravity which = gravity manipulation = Impeller Drives...
...first person to build me a functioning impeller drive totally gets a cookie.

A Higgs Boson goes into a Catholic church
"I'm sorry", says the Priest," but Higgs Bosons aren't allowed in here !"
The Higgs Boson replies , "But without me how can you have Mass ?"

A 24 year old man when to the midnight showing of The Dark Knight Rises in Colorado. He went out the exit in the theater and left the door open slightly and came back in with bulletproof gear on. He had a shotgun, 2 glocks, an assault rifle, and an AR 15 rifle. He killed 12 people and injured almost 60.
He said to police that he was the Joker and that his apartment was rigged to bombs. The apartment was evacuated, and it may take days to get all the explosives and flammable things out of his apartment.
I don't even know what to say about this. It's disgusting.

What I personally despise from the events is:
1. People try to politicize it trying to further their own agenda. Be it gun control, aggressive monitoring of citizens, or more security theatre.
2. The media in general likes to sensationalize the whole thing and in general making some uninformed statements. Changing his hair color red to match the latest incarnation of The Joker. The Chris Benoit murders also had the media spewing out garbage that was completely non-factual as well. Saying Benoit murdered his family because he was moved to the ECW Brand.

I can't saw much about the politicization as I view it from the point that this proves more citizens need to be armed and ready for the actions of these cretins.
To me, it doesn't matter their upbringing, their color, their hairstyle, or even what weapon they have. If they are out for random blood, it is the duty of every citizen to stop them in any way possible, be it shooting, tackling, throwing a chair, whatever. If they're going to take lives, make them have to work at it, not get a bunch of freebies.

After ending his legal challenge to the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency's claims, the Agency has stripped Lance Armstrong of his seven Tour de France titles and is seeking a lifetime ban for using performance-enhancing drugs. The USADA is the official anti-doping agency for Olympic, Pan American and Paralympic sports in the United States.
Whether the USADA actually has the authority to strip him of his titles and impose a ban is currently being debated. The International Cycling Union claims that they have jurisdiction and this position is backed by USA Cycling, the official cycling organization recognized by the U.S. Olympic Committee.

Re: The World News Thread
I remember that Andrew Chaiken(sp?) pointed out in his book that when the second astronaut class was brought in, Armstrong was the shyest of the bunch. Before Apollo started, many of the guys talked about who would be the first man on the moon and Neil said it would come down to complete chance.
Fast forward to the crew selection for Apollo 8. Due to a hang-up in the Lunar Modules production, Apollo 8's testing phase in Earth orbit gets bumped back to Apollo 9. Jim McDivitt chose to stick with his test flight and swap spots with Frank Borman's crew for Apollo8. This swapped the back-up crews (Armstrong and Conrad). The choice to land on the moon on Apollo11 really hinged on mission 9 and 10, and the timing against the Soviets. If 10 (the full on rehearsal) had come up with any serious issues, Pete Conrad would have stepped first anyway.
Neil Armstrong ended up stepping foot first on the moon through chance, just as he said it would happen.
The amazing part is that history could not have found a better person to do it. The fact that it was a quiet, humble man of Neil Armstrong's character instead of a brash, outgoing person (such as Conrad) made the story more serious and inclusive than it otherwise could be. Dashing heroes in stories don't need anyone's help. Armstrong was always the first to admit that except for a few minutes of LM flight, he was largely just along for the ride created and made possible by so many others.

The ICU has now formally stripped Armstrong of his seven Tour de France titles. As the rest of the field was also doping at the time, the 1999-2005 events will officially have no winner. The ICU has also imposed a lifetime ban and is considering asking the IOC to strip him of his bronze medal at the Sydney Games.

So, apparently there are petitions from ALL 50 States, requesting secession from the Union.
http://www.examiner.com/article/secession-petitions-update-50-states-petition-white-house-to-secede-from-union
Now, until these reach sufficient majority to make State legislature, I'll not be holding my breath.
As of this moment, Alabama, Florida, Jawjuh, North Carolina, Tennessee and Texas are the only ones whose petitions have reached sufficient size to meet the White House's requirements to be addressed.
However, this is a serious enough indicator to be taken notice of. People aren't happy. If they aren't happy for long enough, they become louder. Too loud, and we end up with a bit of unpleasantness.

Heh. I just finished an excellent biography of Ulysses Grant titled
The Man Who Saved the Union: Ulysses Grant in War and Peace.
And the Spielberg's new film about Lincoln comes out Friday.
I applaud the White House for actually hosting the site to show just how stupid, hysterical and laughable these people are.
Heck, the Republican Congresses before, during, and after the Civil War already laid the ground rules - you don't secede from the US and if you try, once we crush your rebellion you're going to have to kiss ass to be allowed to return to normal.

The three most populous counties support Obama and together they have more inhabitants than the rest of the state combined. So Florida went to the President based on returns from those three counties overwhelming the Republican votes from the rest of the State.
Washington State is similar. Seattle and the Puget Sound area are predominately Democratic, so they determine the decision for President, the two Federal Senators, the Governor and their cabinet even though the majority of the State's counties and municipalities are conservative and Republican.

A democracy is a form of government where all eligible citizens get to express their opinion through voting. In such systems, the majority tends to rule, especially in two-party systems.
In fact, attempts by Republican officials in many states - including Ohio and Florida - to deny/stymie groups that traditionally vote Democrat to ensure a Romney victory might very well have encouraged those groups to turn out in even higher numbers, giving those "battleground" states to Obama.

Is the Twinkie dead?
One week after their largest union went on strike, Hostess Brands has announced they will liquidate the company and have stopped producing product, including the Twinkie.
As part of the liquidation process, Hostess will certainly auction off the recipes and intellectual property, so chances are the Twinkie will resume production at some future date with a new company.
But if you like Hostess products, best to stock up. Fortunately, they have an infinite shelf life.

Good on San-Fran. If I learned one thing about Life, Man, and Being during a summer in Germany, I learned this: supermodels do not become naturists.

Given the Western obsession with youth and sex appeal, I wonder if perhaps we don't all need a good education in what the human body really looks like - so we can properly appreciate the supermodels as works of art, not real people.

I don't recall seeing an Australian Ark in the movie 2012, so that might explain this message to the Australian People by Prime Minister Julia Gillard:

He's Back!
Former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has announced he is considering running for a fifth term as Prime Minister of Italy after his center-right party pulled it's support for current Prime Minister Mario Monti, who was invited by Italian President Giorgio Napolitano to create a caretaker government in November 2011 when Silvio Berlusconi resigned as PM after barely surviving a No Confidence Vote.
Bad news for Italy (and the EU, frankly, considering Monti's role in the current EU Debt Crisis), but good news for my Muse...

Well he has been convicted of tax fraud and sentenced to four years in prison, though he is currently out on appeal.
Depending on how that works and the election, we may need to update the Wikipedia page to note the Prime Minister's official residence is Cell 4, Block 8 of the Regina Coeli instead of the Palazzo Chigi.
