Yeah, but their goal is to piss of the entire world. The US on the other hand gets enough bad press across the planet as it is, it doesn't need any extra help.ElfenMagix wrote:When the stupid extremists kill or wound an American Solider or a NATO Solider, AND they manage to get the body of that solider, that solider would be paraded about the city like some stupid trophy, put on the news and his/her photo shown on the TV News for days to come. the burial at sea is to stop his grave becoming a focal point for nutters,so giving them gory pictures that they can splash all over the Muslim world saying " this is what the West will do to your family !" is probably not a good idea

Then don't give the bugger a grave. Stuff him in some secret CIA morgue.
And as for 'this is what the West will do to your family', they don't have to fear unless they're terrorists. Well, are they?
They didn't do that with Uday and Qusay Hussein. I don't understand the apparent double standard.Alfisti wrote:...what I was more talking about was: what's the Islamic ruling on display of pictures of the dead or of corpses? Re: The World News Thread
No, they don't. However it becomes a powerful recruiting tool for the extremists, particularly in those areas that may have limited exposure to a western viewpoint (in the same manner that we are more isolated from the Islamic news media). Suddenly what the crazies have been shouting all the time may be given just a little more weight, and it could well be enough to sway fence-sitters.Nachtsider wrote:And as for 'this is what the West will do to your family', they don't have to fear unless they're terrorists. Well, are they?
People get angry and want to go out and dish out a good arse-kicking when the bodies of dead soliders are paraded around. I imagine usurping Islamic tradition for a political ego boost would have a similar effect... it hits emotional triggers, which means rationality tends to get thrown out the window.
The majority will probably just shrug its shoulders and get on with whatever it was doing, but unfortunately it's the minority that tends to make the most noise.
The phrase "under new management" comes to mind.Nachtsider wrote:They didn't do that with Uday and Qusay Hussein. I don't understand the apparent double standard.

Trouble is, Pakistan has nukes. Sure the government is filled with epic levels of corruption, nobody doubts that...but if the west doesn't help prop up these crooks and help them hold onto their tenuous grip on power the governemnt might tip in favor of the hard-core right wing fundamentalists. They they would control those nuclear weapons.

The Scottish National Party won an outright majority in elections to the Scottish Parliament and First Minister Alex Salmond stated he intends to submit a referendum to return Scotland to an independent state (as it was before the Acts of Union 1707).
British Prime Minister David Cameron signaled he would not have the Parliament of the United Kingdom amend the Scotland Act 1998 to prevent such a referendum from happening.

All I can say is, after all of the bitching and whining he's been doing the past 4 years, Harper damn well better not fuck things up. I am, however, happy for Layton and the NDP winning the Official Opposition. It's about time we had a change from the same old Conservative-Liberal two-horse race.

Alex Salmond is an odious, self-obsessed grandstander with delusions of becoming El Presidenté of his very own glorious People's Democratic Republic of Scotland. However, in a way, this election could be a good thing. Most Scots vote for the SNP more because of its leftwing policies than strictly because of its nationalism - so once the SNP holds a referendum, and loses it, hopefully that will knock the wind out of its sails.

Scotland can only support itself due to the unequal amount of cash per head of population given to them by westminster,if they become independent then they will soon be unable to supply the free university places the free medical prescriptions etc,the north sea oil/gas money is already running out as the uk which was an exporter of LPG is now an importer !

Yeah, pretty much. The Bloc has been trying to push for seperation and independence for years, despite having failed every single referendum they ever held on the subject. I am so glad they got their asses handed to them in this election. They no longer have enough seats in Parliment to even be considered an official political party.Sounds pretty much like the Parti Québécois in Canada.

So evidently much of Rome took the day off yesterday due to fear the Eternal City would be hit with a major earthquake on that date, as predicted in 1915 by a self-styled seismologist who passed away three decades ago.
(The actual earthquake that morning in Lorca, Spain, evidently didn't help matters, either. )

PLEASE do not introduce weight categories like they do in wrestling.
If there were weight categories the US could easily dominate the upper ones. What other nation has 150+kg pole dancers?
Olympic athletes are supposed to be amateurs...would accepting the money make them professionals and hence, disqualified?I wonder how many performances will be interrupted by cash raining onto the performance area....

I'm pretty sure that stipulation was removed years ago because it discriminates against athletes wanting to actually make a decent living off of their sport between Olympic years. As far as the Winter Olympics are concerned, I know it has. At least 75% of the players on the Olympic hockey teams are all pulled directly from the NHL, after all.would accepting the money make them professionals and hence, disqualified?

Re: The World News Thread
Better check your Facebook settings before posting a party invitation online.
A teenage girl in Germany who forgot to mark her birthday invitation as private on Facebook fled her own party when more than 1,500 guests showed up and around 100 police officers, some on horses, were needed to keep the crowd under control.
Eleven people were temporarily detained, one police officer was injured, dozens of girls wearing flip-flops cut their feet on broken glass and firefighters had to extinguish two small fires at the 16th birthday party in Hamburg, police spokesman Mirko Streiber said. The birthday girl, identified only as Thessa, went into hiding, Streiber said, but "nonetheless the party was a hit".
Thessa had initially only wanted to ask some friends over to her home in Hamburg-Bramfeld when she posted her invitation on Facebook, but mistakenly she published it so that everyone on Facebook could see it.
The invitation quickly went viral, and some 15,000 people confirmed online they would come to the party - without even knowing the girl, weekly paper Bild am Sonntag reported.
When Thessa's parents found out, they made their daughter cancel the party, informed police and hired a private security service to protect their home on Friday night. Despite public announcements in Hamburg that the party had been cancelled, some 1,500 teenagers and young adults showed up on the street in front of Thessa's home,
"We had cordoned off the house, some 100 police were on the ground, four of them on horses - but that did not keep the kids from celebrating," Streiber said.
Some revellers held up signs asking "Where is Thessa?" others brought birthday presents and homemade cake, there was lots of alcohol and the crowd chanted again and again, "Thessa, celebrating a birthday is not a crime," - in obvious relation to the massive police presence, Bild reported.
The police officer was injured when he tried to keep a party reveller from breaking off the Mercedes-Benz logo of his patrol car. "It was sheer insanity but mostly peaceful," Streiber summed up the night with a laugh.
As for Thessa - she was nowhere to be seen. Police confirmed she "was not at home that night" and Bild reported that she celebrated quietly with her grandparents at an undisclosed location.

As for Thessa - she was nowhere to be seen. Police confirmed she "was not at home that night" and Bild reported that she celebrated quietly with her grandparents at an undisclosed location.

Could have been a lot worse...Awinnell wrote:Better check your Facebook settings before posting a party invitation online.
A teenage girl in Germany who forgot to mark her birthday invitation as private on Facebook fled her own party when more than 1,500 guests showed up and around 100 police officers, some on horses, were needed to keep the crowd under control.

Annie Lennox's House Trashed
The Eurythmics vocalist's £2m former family home was trashed when 100 revelers turned up at her 16-year-old daughter Lola's party in north London.
In happier times: Annie Lennox
Lola had organised the bash while her film producer father Uri Fruchtmann -- Lennox's ex-husband -- was away.
But the email which was meant to be seen by just 30 school friends ended up circulating on social networking sites such as MySpace and more than a hundred youngsters forced entry.
Party-goers daubed graffiti on walls, broke pictures and lampshades, tore apart books, urinated and vomited on carpets, flooded the kitchen and had a pitch battle in the garden.
The popstar, 52, who divorced from Uri in 2000, has been hit with a hefty repair bill as she agreed to share the cost of the disaster.
An insider said: 'Lola's friends were totally outnumbered and the gate-crashers would not leave. The front door was locked shut to make sure no one else could get in, but the ones outside actually rammed it in, breaking its hinges.'
'There was a fight in the garden, someone had deliberately filled the sink with detergent and let it run over so it flood the place. There was vomit on the stairs, and cigarette burns on the carpets, cans and bottles strewn inside and out. The place was a like a bombsite.
'Thankfully Lola at least had the foresight had taken many of the more expensive pictures off the walls and the put the more valuable ornaments out of the way before the party.'
Eventually Lola's girlfriends called the police - as did the next door neighbours - and they were all turned out onto the street at about midnight.
The havoc wreaked at young Lola Lennox-Fruchtman's house wasn't the first time in recent weeks that a home had been wrecked by teenagers in a party advertised on the Internet.
An estimated 200 yobs ran amok at the detached property in Croydon, south London, last month, causing £30,000 of damage after it was advertised on MySpace.
A few days before that a teenager was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage after her family's £230,000 home near Sunderland was wrecked during a 'Skins' party advertised on the social networking site.
Lola is said to be grounded 'indefinitely'.
Kara: Hmmm...Michele's apartment in Rome would be a great place for a party.
Laine: A lot of fratelli are deployed right now...how do we get the word out?
Britney: I know! Put it up on your Facebook page!

so, with no replacement on the cards, the US will have to rely on the Russians for its manned space flight now ?

For a bit, yes. We are developing private manned spacecraft (Falcon seems to be the farthest along).
Personally, I'm not a big fan of manned spaceflight. I'd much rather sink the half-billion per shuttle launch into robotic probes and better telescopes.

Re: The World News Thread
To be completely honest, I see manned space-travel, and for that matter exploration, becoming more and more the realm of commercial enterprise. It's in it's infancy right now of course (pay to go up with the Russians, Virgin Galactic), but eventually the cost of getting up there will come down and someone will realise they can turn a profit putting soft squishy humans up there or mining asteroids or something.Kiskaloo wrote:For a bit, yes. Personally, I think the biggest hurdle to funding/public opinion for space exploration is that we LET. SPACE. GET. BORING. 99.9% of the population really doesn't care about growing crystals in zero gravity. So get back to hitting golf-balls on the moon, inventing ray-guns and telling everyone that space is like it was in Barbarella...
Funding issues SOLVED.

Re: The World News Thread
More than 20 people are feared dead after a gunman dressed as a policeman opened fire at a youth camp outside Oslo.
The deadly attack on the island of Utoya followed a terror bomb blast in government buildings in the Norwegian capital which left seven people dead and at least 15 others injured.
Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg told Norwegian broadcaster NRK: "Co-workers have lost their lives... it's frightening. That's not how we want things in our country.
"But it's important that we don't let ourselves be scared. Because the purpose of that kind of violence is to create fear."
He said there are unconfirmed reports of dead and injured at the Labour Party youth camp shooting in Utoya though details are still sketchy.
But an eyewitness told NRK he saw more than 80 bodies after the camp shooting, on the shore and in the water. It is understood panicked teenagers had tried to flee the island by swimming as the gunman opened fire.
WTF is going on in Norway ?
