Re: The 'Ask a Question' Thread
I'm sure you guys know what I'm talking about when I say it's possible to smell rain. When it rains, and only when it rains, this very distinctive smell can be detected in the air. Does anyone know what causes it?

Re: The 'Ask a Question' Thread
Evidently, when the humidity of the atmosphere changes, it also changes the vapor pressure and that causes nitrates in the ground to be released into the atmosphere which is what people smell.

Exactly as Kisk said. It's more evident in drier areas, and in places of dense foliage it's commonly misinterpreted as the 'smell of dew'.

Having sex is like jacking off, but you have the option of cumming inside the chicks vagoo instead of a kleenex tissue or some other kinky place outside the vagoo assuming you aren't sticking your pecker in her pooper.

Re: The 'Ask a Question' Thread
I've searched with no results. I can't seem to find a good torrent for Tsukihime (the visual novel). Well, I do HAVE a torrent dowloaded, but it seems that neither DaemonTools nor PowerISO can properly activate the .ccd file included with the torrent. It's either that the torrent is bad, I'm using the wrong program, or I'm simply doing it wrong. Can anyone help me out?
EDIT: Well, I found the problem. It seems I was doing it wrong. The new problem is that I can't read Japanese. so installation is a bit hard. I wish I could copy and paste it for the people here who would be able to read the instructions, but alas, I cannot.

Re: The 'Ask a Question' Thread
Ok, here's a question for you multimedia buffs.
What I'm looking for is a blu-ray player with wi-fi capability and Netflix streaming. Price range isn't a huge problem, but budgeting money is always a plus. So far I've found low-mid priced players that require an expensive wi-fi dongle, to ones that have it built in but cost 3x more.
I'm not in any hurry, since I get Netflix streaming through my PS3, so I don't personally need it. It is however a gift for a family member so I'm shopping around.

Hmm... Mine is a Panasonic I snagged for $180 at CostCo. I bought it because it has the best DVD playback (which is still much of my collection). My Tivo handles the Netflix side of the equation.

Yeah, I was thinking of just bundling the BR player with one of those Netflix streaming boxes but I don't want them to be overwhelmed with so many peripherals (they already have a satellite box), lol.

The only problem with that is that the blu-ray player isn't for me and I highly doubt my aging parents are interested in a PS3.Sintendo wrote:What's wrong with just using the PS3 as the Blu-Ray player?
They're expressing interest though to jumping into the HD world, and I thought it might make a nice gift for their upcoming anniversary (my mom is surprisingly tech savvy .)

Re: The 'Ask a Question' Thread
I'm thinking about trying to get a Blu-Ray player I can hook up to my laptop via USB port (I want to jump ship to Blu-Ray for my anime collection). I do have a couple questions regarding Blu-Ray if I bought the drive:
1. Would my laptop meet the system specs for anything that's currently out on the market? Here's what I have on me for specs (of what I can dig up):
Pentium Dual-Core Processor 2.00 GhZ
3.0 GB of RAM
Windows Vista Home Basic Edition SP2
218 GB of hard-drive space
Mobile Intel 4 Series Express Chipset Family Display Adapter
2. Is there any freeware multimedia applications that can playback Blu-Ray discs (to avoid having to buy them) since it's quite likely I won't have such an application with the drive if I buy it?

My best guess would be that sea-water is that salty that drinking it would have exactly the opposite to the desired effect: ie it'll actually dehydrate the drinker.

it causes Kidney failure and dehydration,as you consume the saltwater your fluid is lost from your cells as they try to flush the excess salts, and its not just table salt in seawater its metalic salts as well, out of your system these salts end up in your kidneys which become blocked up and shut down, leading to death !

The Japanese do like to adopt English words, so I suppose some Japanese bureaucrat came across it in the UK and suggested it to his superior when he returned home.

Re: The 'Ask a Question' Thread
An online vendor whom I'm contemplating purchasing stuff from offers far cheaper shipping rates if I opt for FedEx. However, I've never used FedEx's services before. How do they deliver - do they, like, walk up to your door with your parcel and ask you to sign a document, the way courier mail does? If so, what if you're not in when their delivery guy turns up? My home is usually devoid of people between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. I live in a block of apartments, FYI - one of those places with a receptionist-staffed front desk and a mail room. How will this living arrangement of mine potentially affect the delivery process?

I use FedEx all the time and yes, they deliver to your door.
If the package requires a signature on delivery (like my Apple goodies), you can "pre-sign" for it by printing out a release form, signing it, and applying it to the door.
If the package does not require a signature, they usually just leave it on my doorstep or drop it off at the condo office.

It's essentially a piece of paper you print out and sign that notes the shipment number. It allows you to sign for the package without having to be physically present. But I only need to do it for packages that require a signature on delivery (which is mostly electronics).

Yes. When Apple sends me the tracking number for the shipment, they include a link to "pre-sign" for the delivery, which takes me to a PDF I can print out and sign.

Re: The 'Ask a Question' Thread
It's always the same every time I watch a movie scene that features a SWAT/tactical team being deployed. Dozens of men, laden with body armor and MP5 buzzguns, swarm the premises, even when the suspect is alone and barricaded with no means of escape. I may be talking out of my ass here, but doesn't that seem excessive? Wouldn't a standard nine-man section (or less, even) be sufficient to take down one armed individual? Does what I'm seeing actually reflect how things are done in real-life?

I don't know if that really reflects real life, but honestly if it comes down to swat there is no such thing as excessive you don't know everything in a situation such has the guy prepared and set up booby traps does he have unknown hostages or allies. you have to think from the swats persective and come prepared for any and all possible situations.

Re: The 'Ask a Question' Thread
Actually, SWAT would try not to shoot to kill unless needed too. They try not to shoot to kill as a last resort when all other opens are gone. They would want to take and arrest perps.
In a case in the 1980s, a perp holding a family hostage was captured when he walked out to talk to police armed with his gun. The police tried not to physically encounter the guy because of the weapon, but a lone SWAT team member took his own action and shot the perp's gun out of his hand. This gave the police the opportunity to tackle him safely and arrest him, and saving the surviving family members from the house. Unfortunately, he killed somebody in the house which caused this hostage scene.

Re: The 'Ask a Question' Thread
I love it when I see some small disturbance in the small country town I live in get a tremendous police response. I can see it now:
Two functioning ceiling fans spin furiously over the spacious office room of the precinct. Four officers are sitting around one desk, each in turn frowning silently over his hand of cards in a solemn game of Spades. Another is leaning out an open window, his forearms resting on the windowsill as smoke from the cigarette in his right hand drifts lazily in the still air. Two more men sit at a desk, staring dully at the checkers board between them while the pile of papers in the wire "In" basket shifts in the air disturbed by the fans, as if trying in vain to say "I am important!" A female officer sits at her desk in the center of the room, breaking the silence by mashing diligently on a keyboard, determined to be noticed in the male dominated occupation. Her valiant efforts go unnoticed, however, by the chief sitting in his office, blinking sleepily at a report, his head held upright by his left arm propped on the desk with his thumb hooked under his chin and his forefinger tapping lightly on his temple. The simple clock on the wall ticks away the irrefutable passage of time. The oppressive sound is the only thing that proves such a thing as "time" even exists.
A sudden rush of air shatters the scene as the door is flung open. Every head snaps up to see the rookie leaning into the room. "We got a domestic dispute on MacAllister Road!" Cards fly and chairs are thrown back as everyone in the room scrambles into action, desperate not to be the one left behind to watch the phone. The door slams behind the victors, leaving the female officer standing before her computer, grinding her teeth as the "Now saving..." bar slowly fills. Several excited whoops are heard as the Officers dash to their patrol cars, sliding over the hoods and peeling out of the garage.

Considering the subject matter, I'm willing to bet it was from the guy responsible for RoboGeisha.

Re: The 'Ask a Question' Thread
With regards to the SWAT question:
Standard police procedure is to try and outnumber the subject. Nowhere in my Academy training did it state that I had to fight fair. 2-on-1 is good, more is better, depending on the subject's behavior. If he fights, he's going to be in a polyester pile-up until he decides he's had enough.
SWAT is called out when the fecal matter has hit the revolving air circulator, but they are still not soldiers. They are police officers with a larger toolset, that's all. The goal of any confrontation is still the preservation of life, then worrying about securing the subject. If deadly force becomes necessary, they have a greater set of options.
But with the primary mission still being the preservation of life, the goal is to try and negotiate the subject out of his barricaded position, and convince him that if he WERE to try something stupid, it would not end well for him. It's as much a psychological tactic as it is a strategic one.

Re: The 'Ask a Question' Thread
I log on to my profile, a window shows up telling me that I can't get on the internet, because of viruses and clicking the buttons doesn't actually help.
The computer told me I should get Point"Something" to fix it and I did, but it just scans and finds some problems, but I have to pay for it to actually get rid of them.
Back to the window: When I close the window the comp kind of relogs on, and the window comes back. None of this happens to other profiles though.

This "Point-something" IS the virus, or spyware/malware. You can wait for someone who actually knows what they are talking about, but I would just run whatever anti-virus/anti-spyware software you use (I use AVG Free and Spybot: Search and Destroy if you don't have anything yourself and both are free).

Sounds like some kind of advertising virus. It's been a long time since I've fought one of those, but here's what I did to get rid of one on a work computer...hydra282 wrote: I log on to my profile, a window shows up telling me that I can't get on the internet, because of viruses and clicking the buttons doesn't actually help.

First, find out where it lives...open up Task Manager (Control-Alt-Delete) and find it in the Processes tab. Right click on it and select Open File Location.
Once you've found its home, try to delete it. This might not work because the application is running. If so, change the file extension from .exe (or whatever it is) to .txt
Now you can delete it.
If it still won't go open the virus in Notepad and sabotage it...just type some gibberish in and it'll ruin the code. Now you can close Notepad and delete the offending file.
Hope that works...good luck!
