Re: TV Times
The whole new show is on Netflix Instant. I recommend you start with the Matt Smith Series (5-6): Best Doctor Ever. Best Companion Ever. Best Writer Ever.
Then do David Tenant's stuff (I recommend start with "Blink" from Series 3 and then "Silence in the Library" and "Forest of the Dead" from Series 4).
I admit I am not a fan of Series 1 (Christopher Eccleston) - when the show first hit BBC America, I bailed after like three episodes and didn't come back until "Silence in the Library".
I think Netflix has the original series, as well. I've seen them all thanks to the local PBS station (Microsoft is full of Whovians so they ante up the $15K each year to carry the show), but really only liked Tom Baker (The Fourth Doctor).

I think Matt Smith actually IS The Doctor and just rocks up on set from time to time.

"Robots - in a corridor!"
I could do this all day.
Charon: one thing that you'll have to bear in mind when looking up Old Who is that production is very, very cheap, even by the standards of the day (or even BBC standards of the day, which are already an order of magnitude lower) - try and see if you can find videos of the battle scenes in the story "Earthshock" to see what I mean. Of course, lots of people love Who precisely for that same earnest cheap'n'cheerful charm, but it might be a bit of a shock if you're coming in from the glitzy, ritzy, prime-time budget of New Who.

Yeah some idiot accountancy type decided to save money and dump all the tapes to save on storage space, later episodes were taped over to reuse tapes, again to cut costs ! most of the really old programs you can see today are from tapes sent overseas, they recoloured some because they were filmed in colour then converted to BW for export, the colour info remained on the film.

@tremec: Not necessarily... John's "board persona" is that of the slightly-immature uncle - he doesn't have the responsibilities of being a handler, which means he doesn't have to worry about disciplining them. If you ever had a "cool" aunt or uncle (or a family friend who filled that role), that's who John is (on the boards, at least. Remains to be seen if he'll be like that in Men-at-Arms)

Because, just wow and...

Going to go out on a limb here and speculate (on the little bit of dialogue which passed between this Doctor and Matt Smith's 11) that this is the incarnation of The Doctor who ended the Last Great Time War.
In the meantime, Clara may well have just taken the prize for companion badassery, River was well done (and interesting to see her post-Library as well)... and of course it's alwyas fun to have Vastra, Jenny and Straxx along for the ride.

Seconding what Altifisti has said about Clara.
There's a surprisingly large amount of hate for Clara around, and I don't really understand it. Yes, she's another 'feisty' love-interest, who's brave, and slightly reckless but...
All of the companions in the new series of Dr Who are practically obliged to have stupidly fearless as part of their personality: What sane person would trust a stranger to the point of believing they're a time-traveller, willingly follow him into a confined space, travel with him... and then tell no-one? Not to mention that he's clearly insane, as he thinks he's a "time-lord" and hundreds of years old.
Anyone care to elucidate on the Clara-hatred?

To be fair, there was a massive buttload of Martha Hate as well after Rose was lost in a separate universe. I think it's multiple-series-Companion backlash. Amy and Rory were the Doctor's companions for, what, three seasons in a row? I expect they, like Martha and Jack and all the others, will make misc. appearances throughout the season that follows Clara.
That being said, anyone know where I can view the episodes online?

Re: TV Times
I think there's a fair bit in what El said: Clara's something new and is coming in after some very beloved companions (and, while I adore Clara, I still think I like the Ponds better... though they had more time as well of course)... it's similar to when Matt took over from David: we all wondered if he would be capable of carrying the role and there was plenty of "this is a terrible idea, he's too young, I'll never watch it again".Vett wrote:Anyone care to elucidate on the Clara-hatred?
That and, I know I'm going to get shot for this: she's pretty and she's The Doctor's new companion... and at least half the internet (male and female) will immediately dispise anyone prettier than it, made worse that it's someone prettier than them in a role they want themselves or have some OC they think would be suited or it's not who they wanted or what they (as the oracle of all that could possibly be right in a fictional universe made by someone else) would have done or [insert any number of stupid overzealous-fan reasons to hate a new character/direction here]. We've all been around fandoms long enough to have seen it all before... or maybe I'm just overly jaded.

Re: TV Times
Prior to Doctor Who, Jenna Louise Coleman was best known for her role in Waterloo road, a show set in a Secondary school,
Don't panic , she was 23 when she got the part !
