Also, I'm wondering if Taer was somehow involved...

In some ways, this is kind of marketing genius. Suddenly, all that stuff IE did that drove us up the wall: that it was slow, clumsy, and occasionally tripped over its own feet, etc., now that it's a cute anime magical girl, is an adorable character trait.

She has a website, and will cry if you're not using IE.

Microsoft has embraced the "-tan" fad in Japan for years. They created official "OS-tans" for Windows 7 (Madobe Nanami) and Windows 8 (Madobe Yū and Madobe Ai) as well as for Windows Azure (Madobe Claudia) and Microsoft Silverlight (Aizawa Hikaru). So not surprised they have one now for Internet Explorer 11 with Aizawa Inori. As for anime, Madobe Nanami had an anime commercial for building your own PC - it was pretty cute.

I've seen the Hikaru and Claudia show up in MS advertising in Taiwan, as well.

It appears there's a bit of a PMMM AU with the third Madoka Magica film, Rebellion. It's getting some good press, but per this article Tomokazu Sugita (from Samurai Flamenco), had a less than positive reaction.
