Oscars 2010
Pleased with the choices for Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Director, but Best Picture shocked me - and I expect a lot of folks.

To be honest I haven't seen a single film nominated in any major category this year, but from what I've read the Best Picture winner was an overwhelming favorite going in.

- Spoiler:
- Denying James Cameron a win saved what little respect I have left for the Oscars. I was so happy to see Jeff Bridges win, and it tickled me to learn that Sandra Bullock has both an Oscar and a Razzie to take home this year.

Well that's an upset, though I was really wishing it would happen.
I find it funny that an oscar everyone thought would go to Cameron actually went to his ex wife.

I was under the impression Avatar was expected to have a lock on Best Picture - only more so when Bigelow won Best Director.
Oh well. He's laughing all the way to the bank and Avatar is the benchmark for how all future movies will be made, so in fifty years, that will be the movie everyone remembers, even if it won "nothing".
Jeff Bridges winning Best Actor addressed the second of my three beefs with the Academy (beef #1 was addressed when they gave the statue to Martin Landau for his performance as Bella Legosi in Ed Wood). Now they just need to give Ed Harris a statue and I will be satisfied.
Sandra Bullock winning an oscar was cool. I really, really like her.

I haven't seen any of those films nominated for best picture minus Inglorious Basterds and I was surprised to hear it was nominated for the award.
I still think Mickey Rourke last year got screwed for Best Actor, screw Sean Penn.

Im not super familiar with Mickey Rourke's body of work, but I think he was beyond awesome in Sin City.

I'm happy Star Trek got makeup.
I'm happy that Up got best animated movie as well as best soundtrack. That music never fails to bring me to tears. I was crying so much when they played it at the Oscars.

I thought Ben Stiller was awesome and how they were showing James Cameron to see his reactions to it ^__^
I also really liked Neil Patrick Harris´ opening performance.
Though I was a little said that Hans Zimmer didn´t won the Oscar for the best soundtrack...

Re: Oscars 2010
I wasn't surprised by the Best Film award going to "Hurt Locker." I remember it being favored on InTrade. The fact that Bigalow got the DGA award meant that she was likely to beat her ex for Best Director as well.
Honestly, I'm glad Avatar didn't win anything but some techincal awards since it doesn't come close to what a Best Picture ought to be.

Re: Oscars 2010
Avatar was never going to win any major award even if it had caused Orson Welles to rise out of his grave, lurch over to the podium and croak "this tops Citizen Kane any day guys, I'm nothing compared to this". The Academy's neurotic hatred of scifi and fantasy runs as deep as its fawning love of the Holocaust stands tall.

When I look at it objectively, I am inclined to agree. I haven't seen The Hurt Locker and I don't intend to, but Avatar was all about the style and that has never carried majority weight with the Academy voters. There was substance there, but that guy who did the YouTube spoof where he crossed out "Walt Disney presents Pochahontas" and wrote in "James Cameron presents Avatar" was spot-on.

I look at the Oscars and say..."Did nobody see INK ?!!!!!"
Or I could be wrong and it missed the deadline, so in that case.
INK for Best Picture in 2011!!

Re: Oscars 2010
So it the satisfaction with Cameron not winning this year's best picture a matter of him not having the best film, or people not liking his personality (I understand he has one hell of a temper, or at the very least did)?
I really shouldn't render a judgement without having actually seen the film that won this year. But personally, I don't see why a film that is very spectacle oriented shouldn't be able to win best picture. Movies are a very visually oriented medium, and spectacle has been a big part of them since their early days.
It might be an exaggeration to say that "only certain types of films are allowed to win best picture" but I don't think the statement is without a grain of truth in there somewhere.

I've seen both and I enjoyed The Hurt Locker a lot more, personally. So I was pleasantly surprised to see that it won.

It's been in my Netflix Instant Viewing queue on my Tivo for months.

I think he's the greatest director of our time (with Ridley Scott right behind him), but I think Titanic and The Terminator were better films.
What I loved about Avatar was the world he created, not the story or the acting. So while I was surprised it did not win Best Picture, I'm not upset about it.

I understand what you're saying but I personaly thought The Hurt Locker was quite spectacle oriented too ,like this scene,it just screams "spectacle" (a bit spoilerish):
