Re: The 'Ask a Question' Thread
I decided to test out Firefox. While I like what I'm going through so far, there's one thing I'm wondering about. Is there an option to change the location of where you want downloaded files to be saved? Internet Explorer gave you the option to determine the directory location of where you want to download a file. Seems whenever I choose to download a file that Firefox saves it automatically to a certain location on the computer without giving you any options to change where you want to download a file.

Yes there is my friend! Go to tools, options, and main. At the bottom there you could change where you want to save.

Thanks for the help.
Another thing: Should I still keep Internet Explorer as a backup option for a browser? Reason I ask is because I hear there are some features that IE has that Firefox is lacking.

As a general rule, if you can do it in IE, you can do it in Opera, FF, or Chrome. Certainly in Opera and FF, you can actually make a website think that you're using IE, so there aren't any problems browser-rejection wise...
So I would say no, use Chrome or Opera as a backup.

Sad thing though is that Vista won't let me uninstall IE7.

IE has unfortunately been an integrated part of the Windows OS since '98. no need to uninstall it, just delete/move the shortcuts to it and ignore the damned thing. It's not like even a few hundred megs is a notable amount of disk space anymore.

No kidding. My new laptop has 218 GB (over 8 times the hard drive space on my old one).

How do you clip you dogs nails without them going nuts? Pharaohs claws must go... She scratched me when we were playing... No fun...

depends on the dog... with mine, they always go nuts for a little while when you're trimming, but I just pin 'em until they stop struggling. also, use a small rotary grinder rather than clippers.

Diamond-plate file for me. Stopped using pet clippers when I trimmed one of Smokey's nails and it bled a little.

We've tried files and the rotating thingy but... My dogs got violent when we tried filing them. And Pharaoh makes this high pitched squeek that kills your ears... *sigh* We would take her to petsmart but she bites people she doesn't know... And Doc my beagle? Well he'll bite anyone. They only listen to us but they never get their claws cut right. They struggle like fish and then we clip their vein and they freak out...

you guys need a professional dog wrestler (a title I made up for myself when I realized I was really good at immobilizing large aggressive dogs without hurting them or getting hurt)...
but yeah, grinding down to the dog's nail wick is a bad idea. lots of blood and freaking out involved. Did it once when I was a teenager.

Anyone know how to get iTunes to import mkv or avi files? Granted, they are both jackets, but some of this is H264 in an mkv jacket, and it still won't accept it

I don't think it can, to be honest.
I convert them from .mkv to .mp4 using Visual Hub. Since the videos are already in H.264 I just tell it to skip the video processing part (saves shedloads of time and leaves the original video intact) and convert the audio to .AAC and then iTunes will happily take them. Visual Hub is no longer made, but it's based on the FFMPEG core and being a Linux person you should be familiar and handy with a Command Line Interface.
If you just want to watch .mkv files in QuickTime, Perian will allow you to do so.

Oh, and it keeps breaking on Windows anyway
I got a codec pack for WMP before, but it won't let me edit tags on the ogg files anyway. Unless this one is any better...

I think you guys mean the Comunity Codex Pack. ('CCP' for short)
With one 'C' too many like that, you guys are actually referring to the Old Soviet Union.

The full title is the Combined Community Codec Pack. Actually, it's more a filter pack than a codec pack, but filter doesn't begin with C and we wanted a good acronym. The name is also a pun on the Russian name for USSR, Союз Советских Социалистических Республик, abbreviated as "СССР". Blame Lenin and the Commies. Blame movax.

I have no idea what you're talking about Kiskaloo, probably before my time, lol.
Anyhow, after discovering MPC I pretty much just ditched all other media players. The CCCP build of it is absolutely AMAZING for anime, but it still has some limitations. The most annoying being that it does not support FLAC files. The K-lite build has a lot more diversity (I don't think there is any file type that it doesn't support) but it's not nice to all of the different encoding methods fansubbers use. For example, I remember when I tried playing The Subbers in the Rye's releases of Death Note, all I would hear in the OP was a really high pitched and garbled crap.

You can try bringing up a command prompt window (DOS window, that is) and see if the files have different DOS short names. If they do, you can delete them via short names.

Damn. I should have tried that... I ended up moving everything minus the folder in question onto an external drive, and then reformatting the drive. Downside is that now my sdb5 is sdb6, and vice versa, so I need to do a bit of hacking to get Linux to boot again...

Re: The 'Ask a Question' Thread
Now, I don't know if I've asked this question before, but I'll put it out here for the hell of it nonetheless.
I'm seeking the title of a song I've heard many a time, but don't know the name for. This one does not date from any earlier than 2003. It's got a heavy drum beat (something like tribal drums), and female vocals. These vocals are very... for want of a better word, reedy. With a lilt to them. Think Samantha Mumba. Lyrics escape me, but a very prominent phrase in the chorus is "mambo, mambo".
Recognize it?

doesn't ring any bells, but after looking for female names on a google search for 'lyrics mambo', I turned up this:
has the tribal-ish beat and the girl, but she doesn't seem to say mambo more than once at a time.
further searching turned up this:
seems closer to your description, I suppose.

Anyone know a way I can take images off DVDs on my DVD player with VLC Media Player without having those annoying lines going across the image? I know this is used as an anti-piracy measure for those who try ripping the video off a DVD. But there are times where I do take snapshots of certain scenes on DVD with VLC.

That doesn't work with videos. Right click in VLC, and find "Take Snapshot" - that'll work.
Else, if you're okay converting it, you could always get a DVD ripper and deinterlace it with that. I used to use OGMrip (but I can't find an rpm for Fedora for that ), but I don't know of any decent free rippers for Windows, unfortunately. Meh, that's probably too long-winded a way anyway.

I know how to do snapshots on VLC. My problem is that when I do snapshots of a DVD video through VLC, I have a bunch of vertical lines spread across the picture that mess it up. Are there any freeware DVD rippers online then?

Re: The 'Ask a Question' Thread
tbh, I've never found a decent free DVD ripper for Windows. I do all my ripping through Linux (having said that, Linux video converters suck. Probably because there are more open media players and so there's less need for them for a pure Linux user).
De-Interlacing is where a video is shown in two parts - all of the even rows/columns of pixels, and then all of the odd ones. I can't actually remember why they did that (originally it wasn't anti-piracy, I don't know about now). Try going to Video --> Deinterlace. I've never tried it myself, but I suspect that's what Kisk meant for you to do...

Until recently, broadcast television (in the US and around the world) all use an interlaced picture because only sending half the lines at a time reduced the bandwidth necessary.
In North and Central America and part of South Korea, ATSC 720p HDTV is broadcast progressive (so all 60 lines are broadcast in sequence). 1080i HDTV is still broadcast interlaced, but many newer HDTVs store each set of 30 in a buffer and then display them progressively ("1080p").
The Euro1080 standard is interlaced, but I believe DVB does offer progressive modes, as well.
Japan's ISDB-T has at least a 480p and 720p progressive mode based on fansubs and RAWs I have seen.

Isn't that from 'Serial Experiments Lain' ?
Lol, anyways: Damn, it almost looks like the files are busted, is any other vid giving you this result? if so, try to install CCCP and use the classic Media player that comes with it. I've often found it that VLC was causing problems while running a file (mainly crashes at some point in a file, happened to me while watching 'Macross F' often.) while Classic Media Player would run the file without a problem. The only problem to CMP is that it cant handle files with duel audio and more then one subtitling in it.
It will end up loading the default setting in the file.

Yep. It's from Lain. The video plays fine. My issue is not being able to take snapshots from a DVD video without having the friggin lines showing up. This wasn't an issue with my old computer.

Re: The 'Ask a Question' Thread
A possible workaround would be to download the trial version of Fraps (or buy the full version, it's a useful little tool), use it to make a recording of your video as it plays, and then take the screenshot from the recording instead of the DVD itself.

Video was ripped perfectly with the program. Know the logo can't be rid of since it's a trial version. But is there at least a way to remove the frames per second that is visible at the top corner of the screen when you record a video?
EDIT: Never mind. I found out how to do it. I also noticed Fraps had an option to take screenshots from whatever video source you are playing from. Here's the same scene from Lain I took a shot of from earlier, this time through Fraps. Thanks for the find, Robert Frazer.

Re: The 'Ask a Question' Thread
Okay, I fail at computers. -.- HALP?
I have Windows Movie Maker installed on my computer and I've been trying to make some videos with anime episodes I've downloaded. Unfortunately, whenever I try to play these clips in WMM I get audio but no video. I've got Vista, and I've already installed a few different codecs, but nothing's working.
Thoughts?

Try FFMPEG - it will allow Windows Media Player to handle just about anything, so it might do the same for Windows Movie Maker.
I'm a Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premiere man (now that the latter is back on the Mac), so I have never used WMM.

And if that doesn't work, try converting them to WMV/WMA in an AVI container using Mediacoder, or the likes.
