2012 Rally d'Italia Sardegna Results
With Monty "conveniently" on bed rest following her latest 50km service, Elio and Jethro chaperoned some of the girls to the second largest Mediterranean island to take in the 11th round of the 2012 WRC season under pleasant conditions.
In other WRC news, Ford has joined Mini in withdrawing their factory team. They will provide support for the M-Sport Team in 2013 (as Mini will support Prodrive's effort). With Ford gone, Jari-Maiti Latvia will team with Sebastien Ogier at VW's factory team for 2013.

- Spoiler:
Sardinia was a high-attrition event. Stage 3 saw World Champion Sebastien Loeb crash out with a broken steering arm and Thierry Neuville half-roll his DS3 and partially blocking the course, forcing a following Petter Solberg to thread the needle. Stage 4 effectively took out Jari-Matti Latvala as he plowed into a gate surrounding a wind farm. Petter Solberg was then effectively out in Stage 5 after clipping a stone and breaking his steering.
All the carnage allowed Mikko Hirvonen to take it easy and cruise to his first win as a Citroën driver. And with three factory cars out of the top spots, this allowed a good battle between the two M-Sport Team drivers for 2nd with Evgeny Novikov over Ott Tänak. And Mads Ostberg made up for a dismal Friday with a great run on Saturday, moving from 6th to 4th with multiple Stage wins.
I found the bit about Pace Notes really interesting.

Triela: (says nothing...just wears a smug grin)
Kara: Oh, out with it! I know you want to say something smart-ass.
Triela: Oh, I was just thinking about something I heard over at the Medical building yesterday. Seems they're trying to get Adrian Newey to come sort out all the design flaws with you Series Two cyborgs.
Allison: LEMME AT 'ER! I'LL STRANGLE HER!

F1 driver status updates; Hulkenberg is confirmed at Sauber next year...no surprise there. No change at Toro Rosso for 2013...Vergne & Ricciardo keep their seats.
Marisa: That's okay I guess, although I wish they have at least tried to poach someone like Alonso, Vettel or Hamilton from the big teams.

While he finally won the GP2 championship, it took him five years to do it and that probably hasn't helped him, much as it didn't help Giorgio Pantano in 2008 when he finally took the title after four years trying.
The idea of GP2 is to come in, kick arse, win the Championship and get promoted to Formula One, not treat it as a career.

Unfortunate to see Hamilton lose what looked like an easy victory, but Raikkonen's victory is no less deserved.
Of course, it's not really the same team but the Lotus name at the top of the podium is something I thought I'd never see again. Enstone & Raikkonen honoured Colin's legacy well today.
Finally, this was the first time I actually enjoyed the new podium interviews idea. Coulthard interacted well with the guys.

Yeah, nice to see an epic race again after Alonso's and Vettel's cruise-fests.
Vettel was certainly helped by the two safety car periods, but his drive was amazing. Again, I can't see how he loses the WC unless his car physically breaks.

Re: 2012 World Motorsports Discussion Thread
With Formula 1 returning to the United States this weekend in Texas, things are shaping up to be interesting. Having never been to a Formula 1 race before, the Schmidt Fratello have volunteered to take the usual suspects to Circuit Of The Americas for weekend leave (which as usual can be cut short if the call gets out that they're needed). Becky has taken an interest in the competition, but as a newcomer at the end of the current season, one question lingers.
Becky: Which of these horses do I hitch my wagon to?
And of course, the deluge of answers:
Triela: Red Bull Renault! They have a winning driver and a solid car designed by an engineering god!
Allison: No, pick Vodafone McLaren-Mercedes! Their drivers are excellent in the rain, and you can't be the best if you can't perform in the wet!
Kara: No way! It has to be Scuderia Ferrari! If you're gonna pick a horse to hitch a wagon to, make it the fastest horses on earth with the best drivers!

Apparently the Westboro Baptist church is going to demonstrate outside the Race, seems that all the race goers are idolising a bunch of athletes and must be taught the error of their ways,
so it's in Texas with drunken race fans and a loudmouthed obnoxious group of so called Christians(though not really Christian as they seem to have forgotten the forgiveness part ),i see a fight coming !

I would honestly like to see Westboro protest at the Bathurst 1000. If the local wildlife doesn't kill them, drunken Holden and Ford Fans will probably drop their rivalry long enough to pound them into paste.

Been watching Free Practice One and the track looks pretty good. I like all the elevation changes.
Kara's a Paddock Club girl (when she's not lurking in the back of the Ferrari garage), but those hospitality suites at the top of Turn One look nice.

NBC has announced the broadcast team for the 2013 Formula One season:
Leigh Diffey
David Hobbs
Steve Machett
Diffey will also be replacing the retiring Bob Jenkins for IZOD IndyCar coverage.
No word on who will report from the pits, but I hope it's Buxton.
I prefer Varsha over Diffey, but unlike Hobbs and Matchett, he is under contract with FOX / SPEED so NBC couldn't poach him even if they wanted to.

2012 NASCAR Sprint Cup Championship
- Spoiler:
Brad Keselowski won the 2012 NASCAR Sprint Cup Championship with 40 laps to go at the Ford Ecoboost 400 at Homestead Speedway when Jimmie Johnson's drivetrain failed. Johnson had effectively lost the championship on what was to be his final pit stop when his crew failed to secure all the lugnuts on the left rear wheel and he needed to stop a second time.

Evidently the HRT F1 team won't be back in 2013 unless they find a new buyer. SPEED TV noted that all staff back in Madrid were evidently laid off and the staff at Interlagos will be let go once they return to Spain. They are also said to have not paid their entry fee for 2013.

2012 Formula 1 Grande Premio Petrobras do Brasil Qualifying
- Spoiler:
Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button are 1-2, but I have a feeling they're planning for a dry race tomorrow.
Vettel was so-so, but he finished 4th (behind Webber) so I think they are guessing dry, as well.
Alonso was 8th and almost a second off, so here is hoping he's set up for a wet race. Massa again out-qualifies him, coming in 5th.
Maldonado is 6th, but he failed to present his car for an FIA weight inspection so he might be penalized.

It's still looking grim for Fernando. He'll be praying for rain, but even in the wet Vettel is no slouch. Still, championships have been won and lost by strange circumstance, so we shall see...

2012 Formula 1 Grande Premio Petrobras do Brasil (Results)
Was nice to have Sam Posey in the booth for the final SPEED broadcast. Rather melancholy to delete the Season Pass for Formula One from my TIVO after 17 years as I wait the four months to create a new one for NBCSNHD.
- Spoiler:
A great race ends anti-climatically under the Safety Car, ensuring Vettel's third straight WDC.
Brilliant drive to the win by Button and with Alonso 2nd and Massa 3rd, Ferrari takes 2nd in the Constructor's Championship.
And Petrov's 11th place moves Caterham into 10th on the CC. As that is worth tens of millions, I wonder if they'll can him now.

Re: 2012 World Motorsports Discussion Thread
With NASCAR, WRC and Formula One over, SPEED now switches over to British and German Touring Cars coverage (though both seasons have already completed, I believe).
Next to Formula One, BTCC is my favorite form of racing because of the sheer carnage and the kick-off race at Brands Hatch did not disappoint.
As for DTM, BMW is back after about two decades and my god their car looks awesome. I've been a Mercedes Man forever (mainly because I owned a Benz back in the mid-1980s), but I might have to support BMW this year just on the basis of the car's looks.

Maria de Villota passed away today, apparently from natural causes, in her hotel room in Seville, Spain.Professor Voodoo wrote:In other...less happy news, Marussia test driver Maria de Villota suffered a bizarre accident during straight-line areo testing in Cambridgeshire. Witnesses say the car has completed a high speed run and come to a complete stop...then took off again, striking the lift of her own hauler truck at about 30mph. de Villota is in critical but stable condition, but unfortunately it has been confirms that her right eye was lost. There's an idea for a short story...Kara experiences a race, Elio style. Instead of a VIP box with chilled champagne...trudging around the track in the hot sun (or cold rain) with a stopwatch, notebook and zoom-lens camera.Kiskaloo wrote: (and Kara happy - doubly so as she'll be watching it from Michele's place in Milan and not having to trudge through muddy car parks and huge car queues).
And Professor, you still need to write that story.

That's a shame. When someone so young dies like that (she was only 33) you have to suspect she had some lingering effects from her head injury a year and a half ago.Kiskaloo wrote:Maria de Villota passed away today, apparently from natural causes, in her hotel room in Seville, Spain.
Yeah, I need to write a lot of things. And Professor, you still need to write that story.
