Re: Films Everything
I'm singing with the buzz of The King's Speech and I really want to watch it, but I'm out of the country at the moment so I've no opportunity to and I'm reduced to snatching at odd clips on YouTube. Even that, though, is definitely evoking a strong response - while watching this clip when Lionel whispers "I haven't told her about us", as if the two are having an affair, I literally burst out laughing. It's not often period dramas make you do that!

Re: Films Everything
Saw the movie Repo! The Genetic Opera a few days ago. I highly recommend it. Just be warned, if you're squeamish and don't like musicals don't watch it. I have to say I was weirded out when I started watching it, then as you continue watching it nothing surprises you anymore. I know some of you won't like it, but some of you might. The music is great. It's a more extreme version of Sweeney Todd. WAY more extreme.
It came out in 2008 and had a limited theater release. It's considered a cult classic already.

Makoto Shinkai will release in May his next animated film - Hoshi o Ou Kodomo. I get a serious Hayao Miyazaki vibe in the character designs from the trailer:

I can certainly see where you're getting that vibe from, Kisk. There is a definate Miyazaki influence going on there (which is by no means a bad thing). As short as the teaser is, it definately has me interested. Here's hoping for a quick fan-sub release.

Re: Films Everything
Fellow Bat-fans have probably heard of this already, but I'll repost it nevertheless:

My ideal villain lineup would've been Black Mask (a new mob boss attempting to fill the vacuum in Gotham's underworld) and Penguin (a 'gentleman arms dealer' secretly funneling aid to Black Mask), with Catwoman as an ally of sorts for Batman - a master thief/saboteur in the pay of the Falcone remnants, waging a one-woman war on Black Mask's crew and teaming up reluctantly with Batman because both she and the Dark Knight, while possessing different interests, have a common enemy. Also, Charlize Theron was my ideal choice for Catwoman. Still, Tom Hardy as Bane piques my curiosity like never before. He was brilliant in Bronson.

So just finished "Let Me In", which is the US adaption of the Swedish film and book "Let the Right One In".
Personally, I found it as good as if not better than the original. A bit tighter pacing and I found the American cast to be stronger.

Just saw Unstoppable and Law Abiding Citizen. I recommend both of them.
Unstoppable had me on the edge of my seat the whole time. Plus Chris Pine is hot. :3

So after a $175 million investment, Disney's CG film "Mars Needs Moms" opened with a whopping $7 million weekend.
Projections are this film will bomb harder than Ishtar or Pluto Nash. Disney has already terminated Robert Zemeckis' contract and cancelled his next film that was already in development (a remake of Yellow Submarine), shutting down his ImageMovers Digital studio.

Wow.... That certainly puts it on course to fail bigger than Treasure Planet.
And who the hell would want to remake Yellow Submarine? It never made enough sense to be possible of remaking. The Beatles drug-induced haze years sucked to begin with.

$7M revenue from a $175M budget? Christ on a bike, even if you tack on a few more millions to that for the rest of the time it's on release, proportionally that's even worse than Heaven's Gate!

Re: Films Everything
I recently saw Battle: Los Angeles. I'm not going to sugar coat it, it's not the best movie I've seen by a long shot. However, going into the theatre with minimal expectations and the mindset of enjoying an FX laden alien movie, I will say I enjoyed it.
At best it can be described as a grittier Independence Day. The aliens in this movie don't use fancy laser beams or invincible shields, they just use regular conventional weapons - which I found to be a good design choice. Plus it focuses on ground battles with infantry which makes it a different beast than ID's mostly aerial battles.
Long story short, if you can turn your brain off for 1 1/2 hours and simply enjoy the movie for aliens vs. humans conflict, I think it did pretty well.

I love both anime series and the manga, so no surprise I loved this, as well. The cast in general resembles the manga/anime characters and having the entire first season of the anime compressed into two hours didn't hurt it at all.

I have a feeling more that more than a few of us here at Cyborg Central are going to watch these two movies:
Looks like the blond one in the second trailer borrowed Henrietta's schoolgirl uniform . . . and Beatrix Kiddo's katana (from Kill Bill).

Also "Henrietta's Uniform" is pretty much the most generic sailor uniform that's in like every anime ever....which is why she's wearing it's iconic with the whole girl-with-superpowers thing.

You know, we already mentioned Sucker Punch earlier in this thread.
But anyway.
Saw a screening of the film last night.
It was like Zack Snyder had a whole bunch of ideas to put into a movie, but didn't really have an idea of what to do with them, so he took some lame plot and tried to make all those ideas fit in there somewhere.
To me it was kind of like watching one of those music videos that kind of, sort of, has the makings of a story, but not really, but it at least looks cool. Problem was, it went on for almost 2 hours. There were songs blaring throughout almost every frame of this film. There was absolutely no tension during the action (the music was a big contributor to this), and the 'plot' holding all those pretty scenes from the trailer together is barely explored and lacks any of the emotional depth and pathos needed to make the audience really care what happens to these people.
I'd recommend you guys wait for a download to be available instead of going to the theater. At least that way you could watch it in small doses and skip the 'plot' parts if you want.
But anyway.

From what I hear it is a very polarizing movie. The usual suspects, one side says "YOU JUST DON'T, LIKE, GET IT, MAN ITS SO DEEP AND REFRESHING AND PULP" while the other side says "it's a substance-less convoluted music video with the depth of a kiddie pool." I can imagine this will be the fight with Snyder movies from now on.

Yeah ... from watching both Sucker Punch trailers I got the idea it might be like this. Looks like Hanna might have more of the GSG style substance we're looking for.
Then again, that first part where she flips Eric Bana looks a little weak. And the whole "USA-reels-in-rogue-agent" thing gets kinda tiresome at times.
Hmm, maybe we really should make that live-action GSG fanfilm I've heard about on some older threads ...

Re: Films Everything
I saw two movies recently, the first one being Sucker Punch which I saw with a ladyfriend.
As I said before, I had heard this movie was extremely polarizing. I had read and heard reviews from trusted and other sources, and they were really all over the place, with every critic seeming to have their own radically different take on the movie. Personally, speaking for me, I loved it. The first recent movie it brought to mind was Inception, but I'm not entirely sure why, as the two are more or less nothing alike. Inception I loved, mainly because it kept me intellectually engaged, my mind constantly working through the puzzle-world Nolan set up, and the visuals help feed your eyes candy. However, although I felt a good bit of sympathy for Cobb, I never quite connected with him emotionally. His emotional plight was shown in the most direct way, but yet something stopped me from really putting myself in his shoes, it was probably because of the fact that the circumstances of his tragedy weren't at all realistic, no one I know including myself would ever really have to worry about suffering from was Cobb had to go through (it's probably also why I wasn't as connected to Paprika, which has a similar premise).
With Sucker Punch it was different, I really felt the sense of conflict on a more emotional level, with a sense of immediacy and urgency. It kicked in my restless leg syndrome and I could feel my lands shaking during the more emotionally raw portions. This is the kind of connection I'm looking for in a movie, when the protagonist feels cornered, I should feel cornered. This isn't because I relate to the conflict literally (I'm not afraid of being committed any time soon), but the themes that inspire of the emotion is what makes me connect to it. Of course, it works perfectly fine as a story about variety of beautiful women killing a variety of creatures in a variety of ways with a variety of weapons. It does absolutely nothing to try and hide it's bombast and spectacle, because it's not constrained by anything real, it's simply how the protagonists contextualize the true insanity that is going on around them. It reminded me a good bit of Philip K. Dick, in that regard, at least in how one can actually alter their real world through their perceptions. The only true gripe I have about the movie is that the acting is rather sub-par and the script could have used some work. I will also agree with MovieBob in the sense that it seems like what Inception would be like were it written by a woman (except it wasn't written by a woman at all). I will definitely recommend it, but chances are you already know whether it's your thing or not.
So after seeing Black Swan earlier this year, working on the latest and most depressing latest chapters of GSG, the worldwide strife, and the surprisingly heavy and grimdark Puella Magi Madoka Magica, I decided to see something a bit more mellow, so I checked out The Lincoln Lawyer, Lincoln referring the car, not the great emancipator. Like Sucker Punch I had no idea as to what to expect, mainly something Grisham-esque, the story revolving around a court case where an underdog attorney takes on the big bad justice system to show the world that true justice can actually be served. In fact The Lincoln Lawyer was much more realistic, putting forth a protagonist who is a more realistic "I'm not sure if this guy is guilty or not but it's my job to acquit him" shrewd kind of attorney as opposed to one out to save the world. It was a refreshing change of pace for me, with a strong cast of actors and nice overall story. Don't get me wrong, though. If court dramas put you to sleep, this one will too for sure.

OK, so some have said it's a bit cliche, but who says all cliches are bad? I think it resurrects the old 1960's spy thriller formula surprisingly well.

Just finished the BBC1 drama of the children's book Framed and the character of Minnie Hughes (played by 10-year old Mari Ann Bull) is a young red-head who loves The Italian Job and is a self-confessed "criminal mastermind". As I watched her performance, Marisa kept popping up in my mind.

Simple but actually pretty good...and you're right about the character being a doppelganger for Marisa. I'll have to incorporate some of her nuances into my own character.

This one is from a few years back, but I found it an excellent murder-mystery.
The Oxford Murders
The Oxford Murders
After Oxford logic professor Arthur Seldom (John Hurt) and his new graduate student Martin (Elijah Wood) discover a dead woman, they get involved in trying to solve a string of homicides in which the killer marked each victim's body with cryptic mathematical symbols. As the stakes get higher, Martin's grasp on reality becomes increasingly tenuous in this thriller based on the award-winning novel by writer and mathematician Guillermo Martinez.

EDIT - Oh, so that is where "You're tearing me apart, Lisa!" came from.

Yes. ^o^ Kisk, do yourself a favor and watch it. It's one of those movies that you have to see once in your life simply because it's so hilariously BAD! XD

That is all. Yellow Submarine, made with more attention to quality than the Beatles would have had at the time? YES. I'd watch it, if only for the music. :3

The head slicing machine in Caligula was splendid.
It chagrins me that I haven't been able to procure an unedited print of the film.

If the topic of the day is horrifying films I offer Philosophy of a Knife & Cannibal Holocaust...neither one is particularly easy to watch.

Re: Films Everything
A movie recommended to me for its psychological horror aspect is the French film 'Martyrs'. It's about a secret organization trying to use young women to pierce the veil of death and see into the beyond. Pretty good film; real gut-wrenching at some points in what they do to some of the girls.

Re: Films Everything
I never liked Cannibal Holocaust much, too much pansying around with messages and not enough actual cannibalism and death-killing. I mean, a movie with that name should have at least a few scenes that feature actual cannibalism. As it was it was just a bunch of stereotypical tribal brown people doing stereotypical brown people stuff with the occasional cheesy gore scene.

Spit on me and call me the forum pariah, but I find Jackie Earl Haley's Freddy a thousand times more menacing than Robert Englund's. He actually gives the impression of knowing how to use that glove of his, for one.

Got an hour and a half to kill?
I recommend starting at a blank wall than watching Skyline. You'll find the former far more interesting and engaging. A film so bad that SyFy would be embarrassed to show this as one of their "Original Movies", and that's saying something as I watch an ad for this week's installment - Roadkill.

I'm glad they're doing a prequel as opposed to a remake, because I think Carpenter's film is awesome.
Watched Outlander tonight - kind of like a sci-fi version of The 13th Warrior. Not as good as T13W, but still enjoyable.
Also saw Monsters, about two Americans transiting home through Northern Mexico, which is now a "no travel zone" due to being infested with alien life forms brought back by a crashed NASA space probe six years prior. Also not a bad film.
