Re: Films Everything
Just got back from it now. Despite not involving any bowler hats, Bentlys or Lotus Elans, as far as brain-out super hero movies go: it's a pretty good one. I think one reviewer sumed it up nicely: "There's not much too it, and it basically goes "stuff blows up - posturing - funny one liner", over and over again; but you know what? It's done so amusingly I don't care."Destroyer of Worlds ;D wrote:WatchedThe Avengerslast night
(It was the first night it was open in Australia, you see), and I
really enjoyed it. As I found out from one of my mates later, it was
directed by Joss Whedon, the same bloke who did Fire Fly and Serenity.
I do like how he is able to add homour to a serious situation, but
still have it remain serious and not distract from anything else in the
film. Good movie.
Also, if they'd put Cobie Smulders in a S.H.I.E.L.D uniform more often, I probably wouldn't have lost interest in "How I Met Your Mother" quite so quickly...

So, just got back from seeing Iron Sky... umm... wow, not what I was expecting.
Ok, so for the most part it was everything I was expecting from a comedy movie about Space-Nazis-From-the-Dark-Side-of-the-Moon to be; uproarously funny with a good solid chunk of political satire thrown in and a neat diesel-punk aesthetic...
Definately worth a look.

Prometheus - 3.5 out of 5 stars. Not as much action as Aliens and not as scary as Alien, but it does set the universe quite well.

The Warrior - 3 out of 5 stars.
Beautiful cinematography with an excellent soundtrack and not much dialogue. Not a great film, but an enjoyable one. Available on Netflix.
Shot on location in the deserts of Rajasthan and the Himalayas, Asif Kapadia's (2001) award-winning drama centers on Lafcadia (Irrfan Khan), the local despot's ruthless head warrior. Just as he's about to kill a girl, Lafcadia experiences a moment of enlightenment. He renounces his ties to the warlord (Anupam Shyam), who sends his army of brutes after the deserter. Tragedy ensues, and Lafcadia embarks on a personal journey of redemption.

Re: Films Everything
I recently saw Act of Valor. Verdict:
A movie that could have been so much more beyond its solid, excellent action sequences, but ultimately let down by a government-approved script, 1-ply thin toilet paper plot, and lacking concept of a main character in addition to beating a dead horse of a war film cliche. It really could have been so much better. Perhaps it could have benefited from a different director, certainly a different writer, since the characters definitely needed a more established background and better dialogue to make it a better film. I really wanted to like it, but was ultimately disappointed.

I think it's a thin plot because it seemed like it was ultimately rushed, like no time had been put into making the film better. The script also suffers from having to be approved by the U.S. government because it casts active-duty SEALs, and you can't have them portrayed with even a hint of moral ambiguity. Honestly, the plot could have been expanded upon; it's so small in scope.

That was what I had heard a few months back, too.. heard they were basically doing it more like a "Set in the universe of," rather than telling the story from the book. Which... I dunno... Working from the book's format wouldn't translate as well to the big screen, so I can see why they did it like that, but still...
Also, I has a sad because Mark Hamill and Jurgen Prochnow won't be in it, and they've basically DEFINED the parts they played in the audiobook for me...

Re: Films Everything
The Dredd trailer... eh, I want to like it, I really do, but the worm of creeping doubt is still writhing within me. I like how it's being integrated into the pre-Apocalypse War city so we can show Dredd on one of his earlier cases, giving a reassuring sense of awareness of the setting, and also allowing for Karl Urban to be a bit fresher in the cheeks than Old Stoney Face is at the moment. There looks to be plenty of mileage in the slow-motion effects, and the aesthetic in the earlier shots also reminds me of District 9. The mandatory "I am the Law" is approached in an intriguingly different way. But...
"Are you ready?" "I'm ready" "You look ready" . That's some inspirational dialogue steeling oneself for endeavour right there. And then there's this:
"Judgement Time!"
Seriously?
I'm also wary about the scenario. 2000AD is owned by a videogame company (Rebellion) and, having been a regular ingestor of Thrill-Power for several years I'm happy to say that they've been suitable stewards to Tharg the Mighty; but still, '200 levels' is a little too on-the-nose. There is a fair amount of nuance and humour to the Dreddverse, and I hope that it's not going to be drowned in a pummeling dirge of relentless gunfire. I'm all for action, and I'm not asking for some worthily impenetrable French arthouse navel-gazing, but in attempting to correct for the Stallone Dredd they should be careful not to lurch too far the other way.

Re: Films Everything
I consider anything Wes Anderson directs to be worth a look and Moonrise Kingdom did not disappoint.
Like all Anderson's films this one is full of creative camerawork, dark humor & quirky characters portrayed by big name actors...usually playing against typecast. In particular, this film is cleverly shot using filters & color palette meant to evoke the look of old Kodachrome prints from the era it's set (1965).
Being that this isn't a mega-budget Hollywood release involving robots & space aliens I had to seek out a tiny independent theater to see this. The place I found was a truly weird non-profit place in the basement of a waterfront industrial building. I think my seat was actually from an old patio furniture set.

Re: Films Everything
Okay, I will admit the last Christopher Nolan installment was a surprisingly good piece of film making but there's a limit to how excited I can get about Batman.Destroyer of Worlds ;D wrote:

That said, I have a buddy (a kōhai you'd call him in Japanese parlance) who teaches theater at The University of Georgia and he is absolutely obesessed with Batman. As he is infinitely more educated than I in stage and screen, I must admit that there is something to the Batman mythos.

It was an in-movie music video for the end theme. Since Top of the Pops and The Old Grey Whistle Test are gone, not sure what BBC show handles music videos now.

The Secret World of Arrietty; I'm not nearly the Studio Ghibli expert that Kisk is but I will say that this has some of the best background animation that outfit has produced in years. In that respect it's easily as good as (in my opinion) their previous benchmark for background art; Kiki's Delivery Service.
The character animation & story-writing falls a little short of Ghibi's best but it's still very good all around and worth a trip to the rental store.
