I think a lot of hard core Claes fans have a hard time accepting her for what she really is.

Much of this stuff would not be around if it were not for the preGsG lolicon porn smut Yu created in the first place with 1 girl that looks a lot like Claes, another like Triela and a third like Henrietta. Then to add shame to insult, have other authors to the same with said and more characters that would become GsGs.

Speaking of which...

Just a guess and maybe it's all this caffeine making me think this(sorry, I ran out of ephedrine), but would Claes acquiesce to a three-way with her, Rachel, and Fernando?

I realize that Claes isn’t the most fascinating girl at the Agency, but when people start heaping crap on her to make her more interesting, what they’re really doing is stripping her of her personality. The smut novels are a good example.

Another example: We all know Claes is a smart girl, and as a result, Claes fans like to portray her as the true leader of the bunch (almost Shaman like). This also sucks for Triela because she usually comes off looking like a ditzy air-head in comparison (which we all know she‘s not). Let’s face it, if you were to ask canon Claes to be a leader of any kind, she would tell you to, “Fuck off and leave me alone.” OK, so she might not use those exact words, but you get the idea.

It would help if the fans spent the time to research the characters, as well. I've had to re-read all 56 chapters and 26 episodes just to refresh my knowledge of how the characters act so I can more accurately portray them.

It is quite clear Claes was not a leader before and she most certainly isn't one now after the latest mind-wipe when they cleansed her of her memories of Raballo. The girl wasn't on a mission for at least 37 chapters in the manga and when she did go in C37 with Petrushka, she damn near blew it. Yes, she kicks arse and takes names in episode 12 of the first anime series, but those events didn't happen in the manga so, at best, it happens between Chapters 38 and 44.

The current story I am working on features Claes very prominently. In fact, she plays a more central role then Kara does. But as I noted up-thread, I want to "do right" by her when I write about her.

That’s nice to hear Kiskaloo. It’s standard operating procedure for people to Mary-Sue-ify their OC‘s, but when they do it to a canon character, well that’s just plain ridiculous.

Nachtsider wrote:Danjo3 - purist extraordinaire.

Exploring the canon characters in fiction is part of the enjoyment of sharing the fandom of Gunslinger Girl, but it is not like there is not a wealth of information about these characters to begin that creates a kind of "reality" about them and I, personally, prefer to write - and to read - stories that at least stay grounded as much as possible within that "reality".

Most people write about them because they like them and it is probably natural to infuse some of that like into how those characters respond in the writing. I've had to go back and change/edit/cut some stuff with Claes and Michele because it was more how I would like her to act versus how she most likely really would act in such a situation within the GSG "reality". I have to remember (and, sometimes, remind myself) that Michele is not her handler and he's not her friend. He's her colleague and a colleague in a superior/supervisory position, at that. Does Michele feel sorry for her like I do? Yes. But Michele doesn't have her whole "life history" like I do. So his depth of "sorrow" would be far more shallow then mine.

All he should really be sorry for is that she is confined to the dormitory and that she spends her days being tested and poked and prodded. Because that is all he knows. Unlike myself, Michele never knew Raballo. He has no idea of what kind of relationship they had or the things they shared, even though I do. And Claes is a private girl. She's not going to tell him any of this just out of the blue. I have a plan for what I want to happen, but I need to make sure that as it happens, it happens in a way that is true to how it would most likely happen within the manga/anime.

When Michele and Claes are in the garden, Claes starts singing "Scarborough Fair" out loud without realizing it. When she's done, Michele asks her if she is a fan of Simon & Garfunkel. She responds with it being a song that is stuck in her head for some reason and then changes the subject. She's not going to tell Michele the feelings she expressed in Episode 8 ("A Day for Claes") and I have to be sure that I don't accidentally impart any of that knowledge into their actions together.

And yet, when I say "reality", I do not mean to imply that one should stay strictly within the confines of canon. Would the SWA send the girls to Iraq to help the US or to Chad to try and rescue hostages? Probably not, since the goal is to keep the program secret. As such, it was never an idea that occurred to me. But Nachtsider explored it exceptionally well in his story "Battlefield" and so when he put out the "challenge" to write about the Chad operation, I was able to write my own story because, in the "GSG reality", the girls have abilities that make them really well-qualified for such roles so it does not strike me as unnatural that they would do it, in the end.

Now, when someone is trying to write parody, that's different. I can accept the characters doing very odd, strange or unnatural things in the name of comedy because I know it's not meant to be serious nor taken seriously.

Haha, could be. Maybe Yu just wanted to show how in-depth a thinker she is (or at leat that Raballo was)...

...or maybe he just ran out of ideas as to what to put on the shelf Razz However going by the amount of other classic literature, history, music and so-forth that he mentions throughout the series I find that doubtful.
