So I went on to the TV Tropes page of Gunslinger Girls, and I discovered that there is a pilot version of the manga. I tried searching for it but found nothing. If anyone is willing to help me find it, please post a link as a reply. Thanks.

You are probably thinking of the visual novel Bittersweet Fools. The character designs were by Yu Aida (Makoto Shinkai did the opening animation) and the setting was in Florence, Italy.
