Road Trip!

Ook! The SWA is out on a friendly fun-filled Road Trip (or so they say and hope) across the Rome countryside and maybe out to the seas! Or maybe going to Sicily! And maybe to somewhere else they have in mind!

So, in regards to this topic, what is the most likely item your OC's gonna' bring in this trip?

Keetha would spend little time deciding. iPhone. Maybe some other stuff too, but at the very least, her iPhone would come with her (not in the least because it will also give her access to her PC, which is actually running the same OS as the iPhone - Linux Very Happy

)

LOL, If my OC Thomas would go to a beach, he would always carry his sword on his back no matter what.

But... I dont think anyone would want to be near him at that point. Large and strong dude with a wakizashi on his back doesn't really make you feel comfortable.

Thomas would just sit in the sand unless someone else actually takes the initiative to nag him to jump in the watter.

When I'm done with S'sR, one of my next projects is GumballRally-GsG. This is where the SWA tracks down a few terrorists in the race and try to beat them to the goods. It will make Death Race 2000 look like a day at the beach...

Liesel would bring along her Creative ZEN, camera phone, shades, sunblock and a bathing suit (one-piece, midnight-blue thing). She'd probably be wearing something other than her usual attire - I'm thinking a white sundress. A simple sling bag (with zip lock) would complete the ensemble; apart from the stuff I've mentioned, it would also contain a GLOCK 36. Can't be too careful.

Road trip clothes for Kara would be one-size too large t-shirt and jean shorts over a one-piece bathing suit with hiking boots and wool socks. Plus a nice big straw hat (ala "Farmer Claes").

She'd have her iPod Nano with her plus her digital camera and a pair of binoculars. Nice fluffy beach towel. Sunglasses. Since her skin is artificial, I am guessing the sun doesn't affect it so no need for sunblock. And, of course, her HK pistol.

I only thought about it because I was going to send Triela and Kara to the spa in my latest story and then realized that they have artificial muscles and skin so what would they do with a spa treatment and how would the masseuse react trying to knead CFRP muscles and exfoliate and hydrate plastic skin? Puzzled

Though if Triela's skin is artificial, why did they bother toning it like a Tunisian?

She didn't have it in her first appearance in Chapter 1 (checking to be sure everyone is dead in the safehouse), but when she meets Henrietta in the walkway and from there on, she does.

I'm guessing Yu just forgot to add it to that initial drawing of her or it would not have properly reproduced with the other shades in the background around it so he left it bright white.

In BitterSweet Fools, the cyborgs skin is not artifical, and thus has a lot of scars.
Perhaps in GsG, Yu has made certain parts artificial in order to keep scarring to a minimum and yet still keep it alive. The skin is a major organ, which would be difficult to live without out.

The girls might use artificially grown skin for repairs and such (possibly based on their own) but I kind of figured their skin is more or less like that of a normal person in terms of what it actually amounts to (though I suppose this brings up the question of surgical scars). Which would mean that they are vulnerable to sunburn.

I was initially operating under the impression it was their own skin, just cloned, but the manga makes it clear that it is artificial.

I had written a scene in Yume no Kakera where Claes and Aleksi talked about it, but once I learned it was artificial because I was not sure how advanced it was. I also made the decision that the girls being cyborgs would remain secret, so the whole scene became superfluous at that point and I deleted it from the final copy.

Here is what I had written:

Claes nodded her head in understanding.

“May I hold you hand?” Aleksi asked.

“What?” Claes remarked in surprise.

“Your hand. May I touch it? I have never encountered a cyborg before.”

“Uh, okay,” Claes said. She held out her hand and Alexi took it into one of his. With the other, he traced his fingers over the back of her hand in circles before running it up her lower arm. A tingling sensation followed, causing Claes’ arm to involuntarily shiver. Aleksi let go.

“My apologies,” he said. “You can obviously sense touch,” he noted.

“We have a complete somatosensory system,” Claes noted.

“Somato…” Aleksi said.

“I have the ability to sense touch, temperature, body position and pain like a normal human,” Claes explained. “Our vision and auditory modalities are enhanced beyond humans, though our somatosensory, gustatory and olfactory modalities are the same as humans.”

“These large words you use. You must be a scientist,” Aleksi said with a chuckle.

Claes blushed despite herself. “I spend a great deal of time reading books.” A breeze came in from the lake and Claes put out her arms to catch it.

“I can see and hear better then a human, but my sense of taste, touch and smell are effectively the same.”

“I am surprised you feel pain,” Aleksi said. “My conditioning has been designed to allow me to ignore or absorb it.”

“We are conditioned to ignore most of it ourselves. But as strong as we are, we can damage ourselves so the pain is there as a warning when we overexert ourselves.”

Aleksi nodded his understanding. “Your skin. It is real?”

“Yes,” Claes replied. “We have a fully functional human integumentary system – skin - over our artificial muscles. We use it for the same purposes humans do: protection, sensation, temperature control, etc. Our own skin is cloned as necessary to cover the artificial components like our appendages. If it is damaged, it can be repaired or replaced as necessary.”

“Your medical technology is like wizardry,” Aleksi said. “Unfortunate that it is used to create weapons.”

“It is also used for good,” Claes noted. “The Social Welfare Agency has a public face that helps victims of accidents and disability. My arms and legs became the model for new prosthetics for amputees and technologies like cloning skin are of benefit to burn patients. The SWA does a lot of good for the public beyond just protecting them from extremists and terrorists.”

No chapter says what Claes said - I made it up based on research.

As to the cyborgs having artificial skin, it is mentioned a few times when the cyborgs are undergoing repair or during their initial conversion (like Angelica and Petra).

I think that the artificial skin covers the artificial parts and merges with the real skin over living tissue.

That would frankly make more sense as opposed to a full-scale replacement. Modern medical grafting allows complete replacement (all the way down to the muscle), so assuming they can clone it, they could just use natural skin and lay it over the muscles.

Such a procedure makes far more sense then trying to develop an artificial somatosensory system as well as making the girls feel "normal" to the touch.

The fact that the girls bleed (if not by much) on their hands, arms, and legs supports this, IMO.

She throws up on high places. And he swears " If we go to any high places after I told the driver no I will punch the driver intill he TURNS THE * beep * around!!!!!!

Funny this thread should resurface - my next Biff & Britney installment is a road trip story. Britney, Triela, Claes, Rachel and Marcello all head for the United States for some much needed R&R. It’s a heartwarming tale about a group of teenage cyborgs being turned loose on the world with no adult supervision.

Kind of make you wonder what the Agency was thinking…
