Out of the blue question
If you fashioned your OC to look like nearly like a different character from another anime, would it be just fine to use that anime char's photo for the OC profile?

If you Photoshop it to look more like your OC, then... perhaps. But I'm leaning more towards 'no'.

In Rachel's case, I did both- picture and description.

Have to expect that to some degree. But really, is it much worse than having to make your character look exactly like an already established character just for a picture?

Agreed. However, A comission as they do at Deviantart.com or a friendly Comission? (A comission on Deviantart.com costs real money!)
Not that I am worried though, I'd love to see some of my OC's turned into fan art, which is something I'd prefer. but its not a real must.
Not to blow my own horn: I'd figure that If I ask around here. I would be sure that anyone would gladly do it. because I allways make sure you guys are fat and happy with the GSG Manga
In a way, It is interesting.West Nile wrote:but having someone do it for you goes only so far, wat r d chances that he/she draws what u invisioned?
I mean the way you invision them is writting into the story in a submarry of little bits of info.
put together it would form a better image of who the charater is and what he could look like. but again, to fully understand it, you'd have to read the story which featured the said charater.
I guess to better aid the artist, it is wize to make a spread sheet with lots and lots of details, both personality and physical.

Details are nice and helpful, but remember - this is anime. Outside of colors, clothes, and hair styles, there just isn't that much detail (unless you're one of those "realist" artists.) Like I always say, take away the clothes and hair, and everyone in anime looks exactly the same.
As for personality, that is mostly conveyed by facial expression and pose. And that can really only cover the basic moods. I dunno about everyone else, but I can't draw "Finds excitement in reading thriller mysteries and enjoys the quiet sounds of winter."

Re: Out of the blue question
Regarding commissions - well, it would depend on the artist, really. Although I imagine that F.O.C. commissions would not be inconceivable, given the fact that we're all friends working towards common goals here.
Where it comes to having the artist draw your characters exactly the way you want them to be - this is something I always end up having to deal with. As a writer for comics, I have to type out detailed descriptions for every panel on every page so that little is left for my artist to guess at when he or she has to commit the scenes to ink on paper. Ergo, work as much detail as you can into the guidelines. And if possible, submit a rough scribble drawing as a template of sorts, or use photographs of real-life people as references.

This is why fanart is so much easier to do. The template is already there, I merely have to throw the pre-existing character into my own style and take off.
As contrast, Backland Beat has been in the pipe for god knows how long...like half a year, but I still only have three of the characters fleshed out visually. I'm constantly trying to determine how everyone looks from my own mind and it's a long process to get it just right.

Pretty cool. Although the hair reminds me disturbingly of one of my own OCs. Oh well, at least ponytails are a common style (and I shouldn't really complain, because I think Rachel has been around longer then Diana).
I've sometimes thought of asking Rusty if he'd do a fan art of one of my OCs, but I figure he's plenty busy as is.

Love the pic Rusty did- but I had to nit pick a tiny bit.
The pony tail was too high up. But I fixed it. Note- it could not have been done with his work!

As far as I’m concerned West, it’s a fine way of doing business. As a matter of fact, I decided little Britney needed a manga version of herself and who better to rip it off from then ol’ Yu himself. If you look on page 174 of vol.7, lower right hand corner, you see a girl. Well that’s not just any girl, its manga Britney, come to pay her respects to Giovanni Croce. (Biff is trailing behind so you can’t see him.)West Nile wrote:If you fashioned your OC to look like nearly like a different character from another anime, would it be just fine to use that anime char's photo for the OC profile?

Hey, Britney's kinda cute... in that... oh crap. *Hides*
Anyway, Nachtsider did my OCs, Carol (left) and Terra (right). The only thing is that Carol is armed with a katana and not the concealed sword from her umbrella, but that's all fine and dandy. I'm too proud of this picture when I show it again and again, even if it was drawn a long time ago.

Probably Carol and Terra were amongst the most recognizable cyborgs. Carol is some of the few who uses close-range melees while Terra is the only I know who uses a rocket-launcher as her weapon.
She uses an RPG-7 right? But isn't the RPG portrayed above the German RPzB Panzerschreck?
I think the Panzerschreck fits her character better than the Russian made RPG-7. Just some personal opinion, is all^^;

I don't know if I meant to represent any real weapons in that picture. What I almost certainly did was just grab something out of thin air and put it onto the paper. I may have subconsciously included genuine details, I dunno.

RPG-10. Its more modern, accurate, and reliable than the RPG-7. It's the difference between the AK-47 and the AK-74. They look pretty similiar, Nachtsider, and you've been drawing handguns--what you have is perfectly fine. We all know its of the weapon type. Your style wouldn't fit with tedious details anyway.
I find the girls too pretty to care anyway.
