I just stare at the blank canvas and can't seem to come up with worthwhile ideas. You have no clue how many unfinished pieces I have that I've simply abandoned half way through. I'm going to (once again) make a conscious effort to get back on the horse.

It's why I never intend to Try to publish original fiction, and why I largely gave up furniture making.

Your style seems to have changed somewhat since we saw you last: this pencil sketch is rather crisper than we're used to. Also seems like you've changed Elly a bit (didn't know she was a Honda fan).

My style is so sporadic and inconsistent. I can't stick to one look for very long.

As for Elly and Honda... I have zero reasoning for that (much like my other drawings). I just draw whatever manages to hold my attention long enough for me to "finish" it. head bang

Best I can tell some people have managed to find the balance of turning a hobby into a job and still keeping it fun, but I reckon it's a hard thing to do. That's one of the reasons I've never really tried to push my drawing further. Happy to treat writing into a job, but not drawing. Maybe have a stab at writing again? Might spark some ideas if nothing else.

As TSM noted though: your style is still improving all the same; crisper, smoother, and more flowing. It's a great picture of Elly.

Kind of like how people can suck at singing, but in their mind they're the next celine dion. That's where I'm at with writing.

Well, if that's where you feel you are, there's only one way to get better.

I sometimes suspect that in writing (and drawing) very few people are every happy with where they are at. There's always someone better, which isn't a bad way to be; it keeps us motivated and moving on.

Alf, I had you in mind when I decided to put extra effort into the background. Any critique from you would be appreciated.

Edit: I updated the drawing with TSM's suggestions. Updated perspective on sidewalk, bench, and electrical box.

The extra attention you gave to the background definitely shows. The perforations in the bench must have taken forever, but they really add depth to the picture. Shading and highlighting are very well-developed. Your sensei in Brisbane will be proud.

Ellie looks rather more mature and girlish in this picture. I suppose that's to be expected - after all, she is four years older than when we met her. Wink

I like the hand positioning, and the crossed ankles are cute.

This pic is a type known as 'one-point perspective,' with the eye of the observer focused on Ellie's bosom (not making a judgment here, just an observation, aherm). If you arrange certain of the parallel lines in the pic (the corner edges of the boxes mounted on the wall behind her, the perforations in the seat, the lines in the sidewalk perpendicular to the wall) so that they converge on the same point, it should enhance the pic's sense of perspective.

Thanks! I notice the perspective error now that you mention it. I free handed without a guide of any kind, so in the future I’ll use one. I actually repossitioned the box once or twice, and forgot to adjust the perspective lol. I have no excuse for the rest of the drawing.

I might post a couple other sketches later. One of them is a proper perspective piece ironically. Thanks for the input man.

First up: apologies for being so late to the party.

As I think I noted on dA, Elly looks super cute in this one, and it's cool to see the different clothing styles you've used for her, even just in this thread. As to background crit... I can't remember what the perspective looked like pre-tidying, but now it looks good. Probably the thing that first occurs to me is that you could possibly make the lighting work a bit harder. The light's coming down from on top of her, which is fine, but if you used it to pick up edges a bit more (eg, on the concrete joints, cracks, and perforations in the seat) it would make it work harder and give a bit more volume to the background as a whole. Not quite the same, but if you look at, say, the the seam on Higgins' beret in this picture or the access panel in the lamp behind her you can see a bit of what I'm talking about.

The other thing is probably more personal preference than anything, but I'd be tempted to lose the RHS electrical box. At the moment it makes the background quite busy (and the conduit seems to go to nowhere?). Doing so would help keep the viewer's attention on Elly, and neatly shift the visual weight off to one side slightly.

That said, it all does look really rather good.

I've been building a cafe racer with my buddy this past month, so I was able to scribble this out with no reference. I'm still one of the world's worst mechanics, unfortunately.

The bike we're working on is an '85 Honda nighthawk 450. Not the best platform for a cafe racer, but it's turning into a bit of a scrambler anyways, as reflected in the drawing.

Elly has always been my go-to seasoning that I sprinkle on most of what I draw. Old habits die hard.

Oh now... there's a familiar syndrome, though it's historically been Monty for me. Not quite so prevalently as late since I started expanding my character lineup and they started developing their own universes/niches, but she still turns up regularly.

Yeah, I usually just draw random unnamed characters that I make up. But Elly and Pete still make celebrity appearances!

1. No sir, I have a roommate (soon to be 2). So that's allowing me to pay the mortgage off very quickly. I want a paid off house before I'm 35.
2. I still do graphic design. I've worked at the same company for 3 years now, and have transitioned to mainly video production work. I love it!
3. Yep, I still have a bike. I've had quite a few bikes recently, because a friend and I have been restoring old Japanese bikes lately.
4. Still in SWFL. No storms have affected me just yet. The east coast seems to be falling on that sword for us this season.

I'm a grandpa again, and I'm thinking harder about retirement. I was unemployed for about a year, but I'm back to working 60-hour workweeks. Lost 25 pounds. That's about it. I attended Otakon in DC at the end of July with a bunch of the old Cyborg Central gang: Triela, Nuke is Good, Kiskaloo, Crazy, Polos, Boomer and PSVT - had a great time. We're already making plans to do it again.
