Art Imitates Life
Not sure if this has ever been brought up in discussion, but while performing some research for a story, I think I may have come across what might have been inspiration for the assassination of Giovanni Croce.
On May 23, 1992, Italian Magistrate Giovanni Falcone, his wife (Francesca, a former judge and Professor of Law at the University of Palermo at the time of her death), and three police body guards were killed by a massive bomb placed by the Sicilian Mafia under the motorway between Palermo International Airport and the city of Palermo.
Falcone's position was equivalent to District Attorney / Chief Prosecutor of Palermo and he spent most of his professional life trying to overthrow the power of the Mafia in Sicily. He led the prosecution during the Maxi Trial, which resulted in the conviction of 360 members of the Cosa Nostra.

I've recently learned that Italy was a bit of a crazy place to live back in the 80s. Lots of bombs and such. The Aldo Moro kidnapping is particularly fascinating to me, and I've been thinking of using it as a model for a plot sequence of my own.

Italy is a rather perfect setting for the sort of plot used in Gunslinger Girl, the country has the unique history of maintaining an advanced industrialized economy, while have a particularly unstable government.
That Falcone case is strikingly similar to the Croce case.
On a related note, the glasses used in the epilogue reminded me of Google glass.

I think we can assume that if it's been made in a sci-fi thing, Google can and will produce it.
Speaking of which, anyone hear about Google's new WeatherBlooNet?

Heard about this morning actually, can wait to hear what the conspiracy nuts have to say about it.

Evidently Google hasn't, since a Google search comes up with nothing.
