Why Rico doesn't wear dresses

Something that I've always wondered is why Rico doesn't wear dresses more often? She looks cute in them as seen in her maid outfit in volume 1/episode 3 and in her opera outfit in volume 4.

It is because Jean wants her to wear clothing that's more efficent in combat?

Your 'practical combat clothing' theory is one that makes sense, Ryan. An additional reason might be that Jean doesn't want to be painfully reminded of Enrika.

Considering that she in a hospital for 11 of her 13 years, the most that she could have worn in underwear and pajamas. In the least- naked under a hospital gown. No room for dresses here.

That depends on Jean's tastes. Although he seems to be a dress person (Opera mission).

It also depends on Jean's approach to this newfound pampering. If he just does it to please himself then he'd put her in a dress, but that seems unlikely because of both the unplesant recognition of his sister, and because he's a very practical person, so he is more likely to simply ask Rico whether there is anything that she want's. Somehow I don't think clothing would be the thing she'd ask for if given the chance. Then there is the debate whether she'd prefer a dress...

It’s a known fact that when women live together, whether it be in a home or dormitory setting, they start to menstruate in sync. I’m not sure how many of the girls have their period, but I’d guess that there’s one week out of the month that really sucks for all of the handlers. Why Rico doesn't wear dresses Icon_cry

You know I was expecting some emoticons, and people to move on. Clearly I should be more careful about what I say.

Now then, clearly we lack enough evidence to reconstruct Triela's menstrual cycle to the point where we can say what time of month. It's even possible part of the issue is that she menstruates on an irregular schedule.

According to wikipedia the average for girls is 12, with a spread of four years in either direction being normal. So the girls biologically speaking most of the girls are on the young side of the scale, but still a possibility. That does lead me to wonder though. How does Puberty work in a cybrog?

I very much doubt the agency has worked out how to stop the brain from commanding the body from growing. Even if they could, I doubt they stop the brain from running puberty. Several changes also occur in the brain that are helpful/important. So I'm wondering how all these various hormones the brain throws out effects the body.

I mean thing about it the brain is telling the body to grow up, and I don't think the body can. How would the brain react to that? Would it just start pumping out more growth hormone, or not notice. I can't imagine there aren't some ill effects. Perhaps this is the reason Triela's periods are so screwed up. It might also explain why Henrietta no longer has a uterus. It may have become standard practice to have them removed due to increased risk of menstrual problems.

Then again that would require the agency to be aware of the problem. Hilshire certainly didn't seem to know, but I figure the doctors must. Thoughts?

boy, oh boy, where to start...

You got to suspend lots of disbelief when a bunch of guys are given the task of training/raising/'maintaining' a bunch of little girls. I mean, there are really issues that we guys would have never even imagined. For example, unless you're a mom, have taken any pediatric class, or have ESP, I won't expect you to know the whole "wipe from front to back." This is done due to the proximities of the two...ahem..orifices and the short urethra. As a result, a girl, esp. one who's still growing up is very prone to UTI (urinary tract infection). Yeah, imagine that....how do the (male) doctors or even the handlers teach the girls that. Wipe front to back. Not repeatedly, but once, then throw the paper towel. Repeat with a new one. (guys don't get this problem, but in exchange of that longer urethra, they got 'plumbing' problem later on in life)

So yeah, to make the scenario works, not only the doctors, but the handlers should be made aware of all these feminine issues. I figure it must have come in the 'manual' at the beginning. I'd also venture to say that in the manual it explains that due to body (hormonal) changes at that age, the girls will be very modest so make sure to 'approach' the topic carefully. Hence, I'd guess that Hillshire knew the problem all along, but decided (per the manual instruction) leaving the young lady alone was best for all aka. going with the usual "nan demo nai" or nevermind.

Back to the topic, I think Rico has internalize Jean's take on her look aka. introjection or integrating the beliefs and values of another individual into one's own ego structure. For example,in response to Milo's inquiry on her name, she thought it sounds boyish and cool. I'm willing to bet that's how she sees herself in boy clothing as well, esp. since that allows her to move freely and be useful to Jean, her priority in life.

Jean's would be one thing, but her being used to the hospital pijamas (consisting of looose pants and shirt), and the fact that she can move around more freely (and that's what she loves to do) would also factor in.

Ironically, Triela is actually the only one we have never seen in a dress.

@Nachtsider: People get off on the strangest things. One quick look around the internet and you start thinking that it's you who are weird.

Anyway, I think Henrietta said "they removed that part" or somehting along those lines that suggests that it was the doctors. Have no proof though. Too lazy to look it up.

Since Christmas is on 12/25, and she had it just before and during then (episode 3- Bambola), that one can say that its within the last week of the month.

But she stated that it was irregular, so there is no fixed pattern for her until her system regulates itself out when she is older.

I tend to think the same thing. The killer(s) mascred the whole family. Depending on the translation- its either mascred or killed and dismembered (the funation English DVD differs from the translated stuff on the net). I would have to say mascred and dismembered the whole family, and raped her along with the corpes...

This tells me that there were more than 1 killer.
Also from her injuries- she was dismembered as well and left to die. Chances are, the whole family was treated this in way, or at least the females were raped and dismembered and left to die. The males were probably killed and gutted outright (except for the very young boys who were probably raped too). Remember- this was a family of 6; no way 1 person could do this on his own unless he shot everyone first- and Henrietta was not shot.

In the dismembering process, they probably tried to gut Henrietta, cutting her uterus. This would be introduce who knows what to its internals. If it was several stabbings, pieces could be missing. This leave the doctors with little options but to give her a prepubesent hysterectomy.

As unfortunate as it sounds, its what happened to her as the story goes, and I believe is the reason why she's so attached to Jose.

Until the manga states a reason it's well open to interpretation. Both sides have good points. The people responsible for Henrietta's situation very well could have been twisted enough to do what's been suggested. However one could see the benefits from a more technical side of things. They are trying to build the perfect killer.

Just so you guys know, I'm not really sure as to just how it was removed. What I do know is that anyone who would gleefully hurt a sweet girl like Henrietta must have no soul.....

Anyways, the line of thought that Jean doesn't want Rico to remind him too much of Enrica makes perfect sense. It's too bad though because Rico's cute in dresses.
