Winter 2011 anime thread
We have a chart:
What I'll look into:
Fractale: Like the plot and staff
Gosick: Read the first volume of the manga and liked it enough to check out the anime
Wandering Son: I'm becoming more and more of an AIC fan, and the trailer looks pretty
Merry Dream Eater : Like the (JC) Staff and was happily surprised by vol1 of the manga
Mahou Shoujo Madoka Majica : All star staff + cast , highly look forward to this
Infinite Statos : looks like there will be some good action in this
OVAs:
Future Diary/Mirrai Nikki : HELL YEAH,of course I'm looking forward to this (just look at my sig)
Supernatural :not familiar with the tv show, but it's madhouse and the trailer looks cool
.hack//quantum: Here's to hoping this franchise stops sucking

Re: Winter 2011 anime thread
I just can't handle any more moe after this current season, so I'm going to limit myself as follows:
Definite Watch
Kimi no Todoke Season 2 - Loved the original, can't see how this could be bad.
Wolverine - Iron Man was entertaining, so this should be, as well.
Will Definitely Start
Fractale - Sounds intriguing.
Premise So Crazy, I Have to at least try it
Haiyoru! Nyariko: Remember My Love (Craft-Sensei) - Cthulu as a little girl? Hey, South Park played it well, so why not?
Houkaho no Pleiades - Maybe these girls will do WRC...
Hey, Imouto was good, so why not try this?"
I don't like you at all, Big Brother!

Re: Winter 2011 anime thread
When I look at the anime list I feel somewhat nostalgic for my more anime prominent days. I think I may be hitting the wall with what anime has to offer me as year after year I seem to watch less and less. I'm just completely tired of highschool anything, and super cute moe anything.
The only things that caught my eye are Black Lagoon OVA 3 and the Ah My Goddess special thing. Hopefully after some members have watched the shows they're interested in, I might get my interests piqued. As of right now I'm much more interested in watching some old shows I haven't seen yet like Slayers.

Yeah. It seems that adaptions of visual novels (the majority of which seem to take place in high school) and manga that take place in high-school, middle-school or elementary school dominate the schedules now.
Plus the Japanese otaku obsession with "super-bouncy hyper-tits" is really wearing thin on me. But you can't escape it because every show has it - the latest episode of To Aru Majutsu no Index II just introduced a new character with 95F breasts (Japan's answer to the US 42DDD). I hope to god it has reached it's zenith with Yosuga no Sora, which is really just soft-core porn at this point.

Re: Winter 2011 anime thread
Well the two things that seem to be super popular right now are over the top fan service (getting into the territory of flat out porn in some cases) and moe blob fan service. That and Angel Beats, which is treated like its some example of great writing despite being an incredibly derivative Haruhi knock-off with serious focus issues. I don't like over the top fan service or moe blob fan service that much, and as for people trying to follow the lead of Angel Beats... what exactly should I call a questionably written knock-off of something that is already a questionably written knock-off?
That being said I've tended to find there are usually at least a few shows I end up liking each season in spite of all that. They may not be memorable enough to leave an impression, but they're good enough to kill some time while they're airing. And truth be told I'm not sure we ever really got that many great shows in one season all that often.
Now as for the upcoming stuff... not much really jumping out at me at this point, but that's typical, I often find the stuff I end up going with by looking at the fansubs my brother downloads moreso than these previews, which often do a terrible job of illustrating what the shows are actually about. That being said I do have commentary on a few shows:
Wolverine: Any reasonably decent action title is welcome considering how few of them there are. Plus I liked the Iron Man anime.
Houkaho no Pleiades: I totally need to see what this one is actually like.
I Don't Like You at All Big Brother: The plot description for this one has me afraid. And this is coming from someone who feels a lot of shows get unfairly judged because of shitty plot descriptions that make them sound far worse than they actually are (B Gata H Kei, Ore no Imouto, etc.).

Re: Winter 2011 anime thread
Hmmm... while I'll admit that I would like to see more fantasy, sci-fi, and serious plotlines in current anime, I'm also a hardcore cuteness seeker so there's seldom a season where I have trouble filling my queue.
As with most seasons I think I'll have to wait until I actually see some of the shows to make a call.
Of course, the big news is Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica. Akiyuki Shinbo (Bakemonogatari and a whole bunch of other Shaft shows) teams up with the mangaka who did Hidamari Sketch, a writer from eroge company Nitroplus who is most famous for writing a Lovecraftian horror-esque game (that's actually supposed to be quite disturbing), and the composer who did the music for Noir for his first magical girl outing since 2004's Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha. Should be awesome.
Fractale is going to be airing on Fuji's Noitamina block IIRC, which is currently airing Kuragehime and has previously aired Eden of the East (among other things). As such I'm expecting something a little different from the norm.
Oh, and Dragon Crisis has a girl with fox ears in some of the promo art, so I'll be watching just to find out what that's about.
I'll probably check out a lot of the previously mentioned titles too: for TV series, Houkago no Pleiades (Gainax x Subaru x cute girls = ?), the "moe Lovecraft" one, Wandering Son, Kimi no Todoke 2, I Don't Like You at All, Big Brother and Merry Dream Eater all come to mind. For OVAs, the third Black Lagoon OVA and second Kure-nai OVA (although the first was vastly inferior to the TV series IMO) are easy picks. DVD specials for Angel Beats and Kuragehime are also nice.
Oh, and while I'm not sure I'll actually check it out, the trailer for Rio: Rainbow Gate reminds me a bit of old "panty fighter" flicks like Najica Blitz Tactics.

Re: Winter 2011 anime thread
Is anyone interested in making nominations for "worst plot description of the season"? I'm fond of the one for Merry Dream Eater:
"10 years ago, Yumeji Hujuwara noticed he had the power to see muticoloured auras surrounding a persons body when he looks at them through his fingers. Every so often Yumeji has dreams about a war with cats. One day a girl falls on top of him."

I really want to insist that, having read some of the manga,it's a big case of "it's better than it sounds".
I could try to summerise it differently:There exist 2 parallel worlds (ours and a demon world),the bridge between those two worlds are people's nightmares, demons try to take possession of you through your nightmares, our hero has the power to know if people will get nightmares or not and teams up with a demon that's trying to get back to the demon world.
Still doesn't really sum it up though.

Re: Winter 2011 anime thread
It's not a matter of whether the show is actually good or bad... it's a matter of whether the plot description sounds bad.
Some stuff from Outfox's post I maybe should have addressed earlier.
I'm not sure I'm too excited about Akiyuki Shinbo working on Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica. He only directed the first season of Nanoha, the vastly improved second season and everything that followed were directed by someone else (including the superior movie remake of season one). Plus Akiyuki Shinbo wasn't working at SHAFT when he was working on Nanoha. As where Madoka is a SHAFT production so I'm worried about it proving to be too SHAFT for my tastes.
I checked out the trailer for Rio as well. If the trailer is any indication of the actual show it needs more of her kicking ass and less of that character who looks like her younger sister or something.

Not a SHAFT kind of guy but Gen Urobuchi writing the script and Yuki Kajiura writing the music can probably compensate that, not to mention the 2 animation directors never having worked on a SHAFT show before (one has worked at lot at madhouse and the other at bones and A1) could mean you won't get your usual shaft animation.

Re: Winter 2011 anime thread
I suspect my anime viewing this next season will again be dominated by OVAs, namely Black Lagoon: Roberta's Blood Trail, Kara no Kyoukai: Shushu, Mirai Nikki, and Koe de Oshigoto.
Only thing that really caught my eye for the new stuff was Nyarlko, and mainly due to the bizarre premise.

Re: Winter 2011 anime thread
Not a specific Winter 2011 anime, but on February 8th, Aniplex USA will release the Kara no Kyoukai - the Garden of sinners Blu-ray box set in the USA through The Right Stuff. The set will include the 8th bonus chapter as well as all the other bonuses of the Japanese box set, including an English version of the Visual Chronicle Book (with staff interviews, every key visual from the franchise, illustrations from each movie, and artwork for DVD packages).
The price will be $400, which is over $200 cheaper than the Japanese BRD release on February 2nd. Both the Japanese and English sets will include English subtitles, so it sounds like Aniplex is shipping the same package in both markets, just with the extra English translations of the Visual Chronicle book for the USA release.

Re: Winter 2011 anime thread
Saw the first episode of Nyarlko, and.... well, that was not what I was expecting....
Admittedly the warning at the beginning was pretty good, as was the bit where the characters knew they were in an anime, but the fact that it was a five minute short, half of which was taken up by the ending credits didn't really allow me to form a strong first impression...

Not as many titles that have my attention for this season. I've seen Gosick's first episode with the series appears to be going for a mystery/ comedy genre with the token gothic loli doing detective work with a bewildered young outcast same age as her. Not sure what to honestly think of it right now so I'll give it a few episodes to see if it hooks me in. I'm still waiting on Fractale and Wandering Son which premiere this week and I'm continuing Bakuman with the Fall 2010 season. I'm honestly not expecting much to hook me for this season, though an early look at Spring 2011 titles appears very promising.

Oniichan no Koto Nanka Zenzen Suki Jyanain Dakara Ne-!! (I don't like you at all, Big Brother!) - Episode 01
Looks like Ore no Imouto ga Konnami Kawaii Wake ga Nai's run as "anime with the longest title is now over.
Since Nao Takanashi does not have any breasts, it requires that she show her panties to meet the Minimum Broadcast Fan Service Quotient. So like Rosario+Vampire, there are "censor pets" (in this case, a penguin) displayed on a regular basis.
So while this show looks like it is going to be "ridiculous-sill"y and therefore something I would like, I am going to wait for the Blu-ray release to watch this show because the censoring gets really annoying really quickly. Also, not sure I'm ready to jump directly into another brocon/siscon show.
I will be picking up the OP and ED, however - quite catchy.

Kimi ni Todoke 2nd Season - 00
Focusing on Ume "Kurumi" Kurumizawa, this is mostly a re-cap episode of her interactions with Sawako and her long attraction to Shota.
Evidently a live action film has been green-lighted, but they picked a pretty hot actress ( Mikako Tabe [多部 未華子] ) to play the role of Sawako, so that will be interesting to see how it works out.

Based on the first episodes:
Puella Magi Madoka Magica -- It's what would happen if you crossed magical girls with LSD (minus the prison sentence...).
Beelzebub -- I wasn't originally planning to watch this one, but I heard some good things about it. It is about the stereotypical tough yankee guy who is not so bad, being chosen by the baby son of hell (Beelzebub) as a parent figure. The first episode actually worked. I don't know if they will be able to pull of an entire season, but I'll be watching at least a few more episodes.

Fractale - 01
While it takes place hundreds of years in the future, I get a kind of Laputa and Secret of Cerulean Sand vibe from the world.
The first episode did not reveal much in the way of plot and some of the comedy bits were groaners, but the first episode whetted my appetite enough to give it at least a few more episodes to see if they flesh the story out.

Last night I watched the first episodes of a bunch of new shows with my brother and some friends. Here are my thoughts on them (note: I've seen one episode of each of these except for Madoka Magica, which I have seen two episodes of):
Dragon Crisis: Generally “Boy finds Dragon Girl” is not exactly a recipe I think of as marking for a great anime, but “Boy gets pressed into stealing a magical artifact that turns out to be a dragon girl from a ruthless criminal syndicate by his slightly crazy adventurer second cousin” actually made for a decent first episode. Not really sure where things are going to go with this one at this point in time, this episode was decent but the show appears to be heading in a harem direction and I wonder if that Dragon girl’s mannerisms are going to get on my nerves over time (learn to speak in sentences rather than repeating the same word over and over!).
Fractale: Nice to see something that isn’t “typical” anime. Okay granted it’s got a few “typical anime moments” but at least it’s not indulging moe or harem show clichés every five seconds. Don’t know how it’ll turn out overall but it’s got me interested.
Gosick: This show has some pretty significant flaws. The demo of the lead girl’s supposedly Holmes like detective ability seemed more like leaping to a conclusion, and I kind of feel like characters with her personality have been done before. That being said there is definitely potential here. So far the show seems to be interesting and different if nothing else.
I Don’t Like You at All Big Brother: This is basically an incest show played straight and without irony. Some little sister tries to seduce her brother while acting innocent. Said brother’s main defining trait is that he’s a perv. He is turned on by his younger sister's behaviour but doesn’t realize she’s doing it deliberately. I think this show was meant to be funny, but very little of the humour actually worked so my experience watching it can best be summed up by the word “excrutiating.”
Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica: This was actually pretty decent. Yay for Unlimited Musket Works. That being ssaid I don’t see it matching up to Mai-HiME or Nanoha, which I consider to be my gold standards for the Magical Girl genre. Mainly because I don’t see the characters in this becoming anywhere near as compelling as some of the characters from those shows. That being said, both those shows took a while to prove themselves (particularly Nanoha -I question whether I could have made it through the early parts of season one if I hadn’t already seen the much improved second season) so perhaps this will exceed my expectations.
This is a Zombie: This was actually pretty funny. The main character is some poor schmuck who got revived by a necromancer after he died. Because of this he can heal from things that would kill an ordinary human. This is used for comedy multiple times over the course of the first episode. Oh yeah, and there’s a chainsaw wielding magical girl.
Wandering Son: Slow paced and angsty show about a middle school boy and a middle school girl who want to cross dress. Not really my cup of tea.

Thoughts So Far of Winter 2011 Titles I've Seen:
Gosick- Piero took the words out of my mouth for this title. Gothic loli's the archetypal emotionless girl with a sharp tongue. She can solve mysteries and likes berating the male lead which is no different from similar premises or character types I've seen before. Depending on where this show goes in the next two episodes will determine whether or not I commit to it.
Fractale- The chase scene at the start was giving me vibes of Studio Ghibli with Laputa and Nausicaa. Not sure what to make of the show's plot direction. But with the introduction of another girl at the end of the first episode, I'm hoping this isn't gonna turn into a harem anime. Will give a few more episodes to see if I want to commit to it.
Level E- One of my definite choices for the season. Mixes comedy involving the alien character tormenting the other male lead whom he's freeloading from in his apartment and elements of suspense/ horror over the true nature of the alien's origins. Made by the same guy who created Yu Yu Hakusho.
Wandering Son- The premise for this title is perhaps the most original and refreshing for the season. The show tackles two middle schoolers dealing with gender identity and transexuality as they begin their middle school years. It's refreshing in the fact gender identity and transgenders are normally used as comedic relief for many anime titles and the topic is being seriously explored. Another of my definite choices for this season. Made by the same manga-ka who created Aoi Hana.

Re: Winter 2011 anime thread
Some more comments based on first episodes:
Is this a Zomibe? -- Because the world needs more undead chainsaw-wielding mahou "shoujou" transvestites...
Mitsudomoe Zouryouchuu -- Loved the first season with its so wrong its funny approach. The first episode this season is a parody of sentai shows and would be worth a look for that reason alone.
Fractale -- I too got that "Ghibli" vibe a few times. An interesting sci-fi piece that has great potential

Re: Winter 2011 anime thread
I've watched a couple shows so far.
Oniichan no koto nanka zenzen sukijanain dakara ne- It keeps my interest however panties are excessive. pro or con you choose.
Kore wa zombie desu kai- Randomly good if you know what I mean. I think we have a winner.
Gosick- Pompadour hair lol! Loli smoking a pipe, detective horror, likable main character, needless to say it keeps my attention.
Wandering son- We definitely have a winner here. I like the basis, the premise, the story, and the art is very soothing. a show that I hope is more than the average anime that is truly deep.
as has been said,

I'm still getting into this season's anime, but I have to say that Gosick (is it really called that because Japanese can't pronounce "Gothic"?) has appealing art design - I enjoy the Art Nouveau OP, and Victorique is appropriately drowned in crepe.

She has the best laugh ever
Level E,Wandering son, fractale are all good but it's really all the speculation around Madoka that has me excited
It reminds me of Sora no Woto in that even if I like the show,it's really the crazy theories the fandom comes up with that excites me.And it never stops, there's already more than 9000 post on /a/ (litteraly)

Haiyoru! Nyaruani: Remember My Mr. Lovecraft (TV)
This appears to have been a series of 11 FLASH episodes (like Macross Fufonfia) shown on television and based on an earlier ONA (Original Network Animation) of 9 episodes.
While the end theme is total win, the episodes themselves are really lame. It's nothing but painfully bad sexual innuendo. Fortunately, each episode is only about two minutes long, so the pain passes quickly.

Depending on how it plays out, this will either become one of my all-time favorite shows or a soul-crushing disappointment.
But for the moment, it remains some kind of wonderful.

And Yui from K-ON!(!) makes a guest appearance (as Nessa)...
Still not sure what to make of this show. It has a lot of comedy, but I find the comedy kinda lame. On the flip side, the social contracts and norms of the society are very different from those of today, which is kind of interesting.

Looks cooler than Iron Man and Logan's motivations are more personal than Stark's. Like IM, the high-quality animation makes it worth watching.

Lotte No Omocha
Lotte No Omocha
In the medieval fantasy world of Alfheimr, succubus princess Astarotte Ygvar, the first princess of the kingdom of Ygvar, has just reached the age of 10. For the coming years of a young succubus’ life, it is necessary for them to have a male harem. In order to maintain their body and preserve their beautiful appearance, they must consume a substance only found on males. This substance is a liquid called Sauzfryma, better known as semen. The princess, however, bears a great dislike against men, and only agrees to create a harem if a human male is to join.

Re: Winter 2011 anime thread
Awinnel -you sure that's the plot of something that's going to air on TV and not a flat out Hentai production or something?
Anyway, I just got caught up on a bunch of stuff today, and figured maybe I’d take the opportunity to chime in since I haven’t commented on the new shows very much yet.
Dragon Crisis (Episode 3): Kind of lost it after Episode one. Not absolutely terrible but doesn’t really have a lot to recommend it.
Fractale (Episode 3): Generally pretty good, although I found the sudden bloody violence near the end of Episode 3 pretty jarring for a show that had been so silly up to that point. At least it keeps the indulgence in lame harem show crap fairly minimal and manages to be quite different from the norm.
Freezing (Episode 1): Parts of this make me feel like I’m watching an EVA rip off. This show manages to come across as ridiculous despite being meant to be fairly serious. Also, to put it bluntly I find gore and fan service an iffy combination.
Gosick (Episode 3): I can’t say I like everything about this series. It’s got its share of flaws. But after three episodes I’d say it’s probably one of my top picks for the season. Also I’m finding I rather like the male lead. He’s not a generic loser.
Infinite Stratos (Episode 4): Wow, shit got serious in episode 4. This one is a mixed bag. It’s a harem show, and I don’t like some of the character dynamics that have developed in relation to that. In particular I feel the show’s male lead has too much natural talent with ISes and one of the girls is really full of herself. On the other hand there’s some pretty slick aerial combat scenes with the IS units and the show has actually managed to be rather clever at times. So in spite of the flaws I’d actually say this is one of my top picks for this season. Also I'm sensing a possible reverse trap coming up.
Level E (Episode 3): This goes against the flow for what’s currently big in anime (fan service and moe fan service). Granted I’m not sure the characters are actually that unique or original, but they’re at least outside the current norms. It’s been reasonably entertaining so far, although I’m not sure what to make of the future of this show after the revelations of Episode 3.
Madoka Magica (Episode 4): Episode 4’s angst wasn’t all that effective because the show didn’t make me care that much about the character death it was focused on. There’s some interesting stuff here but so far it hasn’t really clicked for me.
Merry Dream Eater (Episode 4): It’s got a certain amount of distinctiveness and I think the one girl’s dad is awesome. On the other hand it’s not really been able to hook me in very well either (granted that goes for a lot of the shows this season).
This is a Zombie? (Episode 3): It’s kind of lost it a bit in my opinion. A lame attempt at serious plot is probably part of the problem. Attempts to do serious plot with shows that rely on crazy stuff can really backfire (reference the serious climactic arcs of a lot of otherwise pretty zany and comedic shows).
Current top three is pretty much Fractale, Gosick, and Infinite Stratos. Level E also stands out.
Also, this may be a bit of a late comment since it’s a trend that began last season and is only continuing this one, but has anyone found that Index Season 2 has gone off the deep end in a bad way?

I would not say it's gone off the deep end, but like the original series, it never should have been 26 episodes as it loses it's focus. It would have been better as four 13-episode series, IMO, as it would have likely remained a tighter story.
Then again, I only really enjoy it when Index is present or when Misaka gets all flustered around Touma. When neither Index or Misaka are around, I lose interest.

I don't watch mahou shojo shows - the only one I spent any time with is Princness Tutu for all of the classical music and ballet referencing - but I gave Puella Magi Madoka Magika a look after hearing gossip about it being relatively brutal for that sort of show. I have to say that I'm impressed. Hats off to the art director, as some of the scenes are downright freakish.

Hōkago no Pleiades
A collaboration between GAINAX and Fuji Heavy Industries (parent company of Subaru), this show is a series of four ONAs released on YouTube on February 1st.
It's your standard magical girl story, with four girls working to recover the "engine fragments" to send their president, a Pleiadean (who looks like a cross between a chibi-Octopus and Jigglypuff from Pokemon), back home. A fifth girl, Subaru, discovers them and decides to help. Confronting them is some guy who wants the engine fragments for himself.
It's nothing you haven't seen before, and you've seen it done a lot better elsewhere, but all four episodes are five minutes each, so you can burn it out really quick if you are so inclined to watch. When activated, the brooms make the sound of Subaru's boxer four-cylinder engine, which is amusing.
The end theme is also catchy and the design artwork at the end of the fourth episode is pretty good - if they release an Art Book for the show, I'd definitely buy it.
