Re: Great Moments in fail sub/dub history
It's a shame I don't have my subtitled copies of Jinki: Extend and Saber Marionette J to X. Those were some piles of horse manure, man. Also, TV Nihon irritate the hell out of me with their penchant for peppering their subs with untranslated words and translator's notes. I'm here to watch a show and be entertained, not attend a goddamn language class.
As for the dub side of things - I'm normally all for dubs, but the English dub for Lost Universe is complete and utter garbage. Only bad dub I've ever encountered.

Re: Great Moments in fail sub/dub history
I've encountered numerous situations where fansubbers used so-so translations and numerous situations where at least one voice in a dub really made it's presence felt in a bad way. In terms of situations I can really remember, I felt that Funimations subtitles on the DVDs for School Rumble were pretty crappy since I felt that a lot of the humor got lost in translation in comparison to the Wannabe Fansubs version. Funimation's subtitles might be better than the ones Your Mom fansubs did for the later episodes of the second season though (Wannabe stopped fansubbing the second season partway through do to the licensing announcement). As you might guess from the name "Your Mom" is not exactly a fansub group that was known for quality.
As far as dubs go, I think the two that really stand out as bad are the ones for Mai-HiME and Starship Operators. In HiME the most obvious issue is probably the replacement of Shizuru's Kyoto-ben accent with a southern drawl (the character is supposed to come across as very traditionally Japanese), but there are a lot of other issues as well. Mai sounds like a valley girl for instance and Yuiichi's voice actor doesn't seem very into his role (there's probably a reason his entire anime voice acting career is like three series). And then there was that important dramatic scene which made me burst out laughing when I watched it dubbed. Characterisation and dramatic impact are some of HiME's biggest strong points, so the fact that the English dub wasn't able to preserve those elements was a big problem.
As for Starship Operators, I wasn't always keen on the voice acting but the issue that really stood out was the liberties taken with the script. Sometimes it's not a good idea to translate literally, but I appreciate it when there's an effort made to at least stick close to the spirit of the original. Probably the scene that stood out most as a problem was one of the early scenes in the first episode -they changed the main character's explanation of why she doesn't date from her not seeing a point in doing so at that point in time to her being too shy to date. Considering that the main character was one of the best things that show had going for it, I didn't appreciate them messing with her personality like that.
Which remind me, the official subtitles for Starship Operators were often better than the fansubs (I seem to remember a particular scene being easier to understand with the official subs), but they do have one really strange bit -they refer to one of the enemy vessels as a "space submarine." I felt the fansubbers use of the term "stealth ship" was a lot less ridiculous sounding.

Yeah, but any young Japanese girl in love makes that sound. Listen to Skuld every time she unveils one of her new inventions, for example. Plus that's the original seiyuu, so how can it be a dub failure?

Re: Great Moments in fail sub/dub history
It's why I tend to avoid Japanese dubs, simply because I cannot stand the voices. Nothing against the Japanese language or voice actors/actresses or anything, it's just that I, personally, find the voices downright annoying.Kiskaloo wrote:JayBirdSupreme wrote:I'm pretty sure she was talking about that... sound that Henrietta made. Another thing, and I'll probably get a lot of flak for this, is that they all sound the same, at least to me. Whenever I watch an anime with the original Japanese voices, I hear the same generic male voice come from male characters, and the same generic female voice come from female characters, just with slight variations for each character, like a different tone or pitch. I'm not sure why I hear it that way, when it seems everyone else is able to identify the different "seiyuus" from voice alone.
Anyway, I'm sorry I went off topic, and I'm sorry if I've offended anyone by posting this, but this is how I honestly feel about Japanese dubs. I've been meaning to get this off my chest for a while now, I just never found the right time to do it. And now, I'm not even sure if this was the right time. In any case, please accept my apologies if I have done anything wrong, or if I have hurt anyone's feelings. I just started writing a reply and it somehow turned into a bit of a rant. I'm out of things to say for the moment, so I think I'll put it to an end here.

If it can reassure you the VA hasn't found another role since (except as an extra in one episode of kobato)
The original japanese henrietta from season 1 is probably too busy with her music career to take on the role again
What really was disapointing to me was that even Hanazawa Kana wasn't really good as angie and she's one of my favorite VAs out there (she's the lead character in the 2nd season of darker than black for exemple)
But back on topic with a classic :
I guess it fails so much it becomes a win,but really even if the line is fun already in the japanese or french dubs i've watched, the english one takes the crown.

HELL YES. What the hell did you pricks do to Henrietta? She's my favorite character. It's one of my top issues among dozens of why I HATE Il Teatrino. She's been replaced with this moe-blob.... thing. This isin't Henrietta.

Epic Potato Chip Eating
Seriously though, was this meant to be some sort of comedic relief that poked fun at all the epic seriousness of Death Note? I can't imagine that the director actually meant for this to add actual dramatic effect.

I didn't realize that Kana played Angie is season 2, likely because I didn't really take notice of her until I heard Renai Circulation.
That said, since I can't remember Angie's voicework in Il Teatrino very well... how can that fail? Some of Kana's most famous recent roles include characters like Nadeko and Tenshi, it seems like she's be a good match for Angelica.
Side note: for a while I thought Kana was one of those actresses that always sounds similar, but her recent performance as the gothloli girl in Ore no Imouto sounded pretty different from the roles I know her for. Also, her photo on anidb.net just screams "SO CUTE": http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=creator&creatorid=176

You know, at one point I actually applied to do a co-op term as an office assistant at the studio that made that dub. Didn't get the position though.

I guess it's a difference of expectations since I've been a Kana fanboy for 3 years (in fall 07' after hearing her in sketchbook full color's) but nobody knew her back then now there's a bunch of bandwaggoners!
Anyway point is since I was already a fanboy before the announcement she'd be Angie I expected a lot,and while she gave a "standard cute" kana performance (though using a voice that's closer to "kobato" than to "kanade/tenshi") I thought she had much more potential, then I heard her performance in darker than black II as the main character: a "girl with a gun" named Suou and thought "that's what I wanted for GG!"
Only scene I found on youtube that showcases her acting, great scene but highly spoilerish:

While she definatly doesn't have the most range in the world she definatly has more range than most people give her credit for, glad she got that part in Ore no Imouto. The problem might just be overexposure, she's in 5 animes this season.

I never watched Sketchbook (probably should, I guess), which probably explains the difference. I think we both have that habit where we really notice someone's voice work after a certain performance really impresses us. The most notable example for me would be Noto Mamiko as Matsuri Shihou in Sola, I hadn't been into anime very long at that point and I'd never seen a character with such charming mannerisms. Of course, I now recognize Noto Mamiko to the point where when she played a mute in Canaan... I identified her by her breathing and eating sounds.

Sometimes when you hear someone use a certain voice a few times you tend to associate that voice with them too. Case in point: I long associated Saito Chiwa with loli-tsundere characters like Hazuki from Moon Phase. Then I found out she plays Hitagi in Bakemonogatari. Completely changed my impression of her voicework.

Sure , from 15:35 to 18:50, not saying you won't recognise her,you most certainly will but it's not everyday you see her in a dramatic role like this.

The direction of the series may have had something to do with Kana's performance. Considering how sugar coated the art style is, maybe that was the sort of performance the director was looking for?
Totoum wrote:The original japanese henrietta from season 1 is probably too busy with her music career to take on the role again
It's odd that they completely ditched the first season GSG cast for Il Teatrino. That's pretty much never done in anime unless the series is really, really old -and even then they sometimes dredge up the originals. And things got really weird when they brought Elsa's voice actress in as Patricia -a character who appeared in season one with a different voice actress).
Yuuka Nanri isn't one of the voice actresses I follow a lot, but I think she's awesome just because of how fun it is to point out to people that are familiar with Henrietta that one of her VA's other roles was Nao Yuuki from Mai-HiME.
What voice actors/actresses do you think of as being highly versatile anyhow? The ones that jump to mind for me are Tomozaku Seki, Satsuki Yukino, and Megumi Hayashibara. Maybe Mai Nakahara as well. And I suppose it we're on HiME alumni Saeko Chiba might also have a claim since she voiced Natsuki from that series and freaking Dokuro-chan from Beating Angel Dokuro chan (although I'll admit Dokuro-chan doesn't have a particularly natural voice).
Edit: Since I'm also curious about what scene of DTB 2 you're thinking of, can I ask what episode the clip is from? You gave a time, but not an episode...

Of the current crop, Yui Horie, to be sure. And to think she's 34!
And for old school, Michie Tomizawa had an impressive range. I went to the Project A-Ko 2 premiere with her (she did the voice of C-Ko in that series) and she did some of her other characters (Pony from Gall Force, Sailor Mars from Sailor Moon, Linna Yamazaki from Bubblegum Crisis, etc.) and they were pretty different.

I think it's a combination of time and new creative team.
Another exemple is the Air Gear OVA that's gonna come out, satelight is replacing toei and they've changed the whole cast.
Maybe Yu Aida didn't like the actors in S1 so he dedcided to change them?

Ayahi Takagaki comes to mind, here's a video of some of her work , if 5 minutes is too long then I suggest watching 2:50-3:35

Possibly. There's lots of cases of sequels done by another studio using the same cast as the original after all (Full Metal Panic and Strike Witches come to mind).

Yeah, there's definitely some variation there. Too bad I couldn't dredge up that compilation of Mai Nakahara voiced characters that was on youtube a while back.

oops,sorry about that
It's episode 12
Hmmm, that's not bad (then again, I wasn't really expecting I'd find it bad -I liked the character she's voicing after all) but I'm not sure that voice would work for Angelica.
You know, I wonder if this is really the appropriate thread to be talking about voice actors and actresses that we happen to like.
