How not to use a sniper rifle
Shoujo mangaka Mayu-tan demonstrates the improper stance for firing the Heckler and Koch PSG-1 sniper rifle.
She also demonstrate how not to fire an M4 carbine in one of her manga:

Haha, kinda funny.
Interesting though in the article how it mentions the sizing issues that she had being only 150cm tall (take a look where she's trying to hold the gun correctly). Might bear some thought considering how small some of the cyborgs are.

Re: How not to use a sniper rifle
In the OCs Mina (Westnile's OC) and Guinevere (LoC's OC) are the smallest and youngest cyborgs in the agency (each being 7). Guinevere's handler gave her a gun to large for her to hold but she has managed to hold and fire it like she's straggling a cat!Alfisti wrote:Haha, kinda funny.

Re: How not to use a sniper rifle
That stance might not be quite as far fetched as you think. I seem to remember reading about a CQB technique for M-16 type rifles that put the stock either over or under the shoulder to make the weapon more maneuverable. Of course, a M-4 is more maneuverable than an M-16 to begin with, and with them the shooter has the option of setting the telescoping stock to it's shortest length for CQB (not always the most ergonomically comfortable position for many shooters, but it can apparently be useful in tight spaces). That being said, that's a CQB technique, not a sharpshooting technique, and furthermore I think you'd have to be pretty darn small to have trouble with the M-4s stock length if you set it to the fully collapsed position (well, assuming you aren't wearing a lot of bulky body armor and stuff -part of the reason those multi position stocks are useful is because they allow the user to adjust for things like that).

Re: How not to use a sniper rifle
recoil ! the stocks there for a reason, you might get away with firing a 5.56 weapon like that but if she fires that sniper rifle like that she will get hurt !
on top of which it put her to far forward to use the scope, which would most likely hit her in the face and it puts her ear a bit closer to the chamber as well so deafness is likely !

Check the middle and ring fingers. I'm glad I don't read that type of manga, as the framing alone would mess with my head. Horrible weapon details like that would just add to the fire.

Yeah...firing a 7.62/.308 caliber rifle like PSG1 would probably be less than awesome.

Re: How not to use a sniper rifle
Good Lord. I know that firearms aren't common in Japan, and that there isn't a particularly great deal of overlap between NRA gun-nuts and the bishonen shoujo manga readership, but still that's something of a fluff to say the least. When you add her buying an airsoft rifle precisely so that she can demonstrate her misapprehension of proper handling, I'm not sure whether to commend her for her tenacity, sympathise with her for her apparently honest mistake, or laugh at her for her poor research...

Re: How not to use a sniper rifle
:facepalm:They put the sights on top for a reason.
still it is better than the old shoot your gun sideways.
(even that way can be the right way,i.e. when useing a AK-47 when lying prone - due to its awkwardly large magazine, holding the weapon vertically elevates the angle of the barrel upward by a good 20 degrees, which means you have to lift your head well off the ground to look down the sights, presenting a large target.)

Re: How not to use a sniper rifle
I've single-hand fired a handgun at a 45 degree tilt to see if it help with the recoil some. It does, but you still look like a 'tard. A 'tard who can't even get gangsta right. I stopped doing it.

Re: How not to use a sniper rifle
it stops the recoil cos the kinetic energy is being transfered into your hand this also acts as a slight silencer but it could turn ur wrist into dist.maverick375 wrote:I've single-hand fired a handgun at a 45 degree tilt to see if it help with the recoil some. Re: How not to use a sniper rifle
To be honest you wouldn't rest your stock on your shoulder in CQB - where accuracy and rate of accurate fire is pretty important. It's really more common in Afghanistan and situations where someone is just chilling behind cover and it's difficult to shoulder the weapon effectively with a full cheek weld, so they just rest it on their shoulder in some manner and peer through the optic.
So, it's not a particularly effective technique - just one that arose given the situation tailored for comfort. Conversely, if you're lying on your back, you might not be able to get your stock tucked in anyway, so there's a reason you might just fire without the rifle being fully supported until you could get to a proper stance.
Many persons are often trying running the rifle sideways if you're shooting over low cover or going prone where vertical height is an issue. It looks dumb, but you present a smaller target.
