Gunslinger Girl Three: A New OP
While I enjoyed Kokia's theme for Il Teatrino - it's an enjoyable song on its own merits - one of the reasons why the Madhouse GSG anime was so memorable was because of its uniquely atypical OP; selecting a barely-heard Scottish indie band definitely couldn't be said to be a lucrative sponsorship deal! It allowed the music to be more consciously selected to fulfil the show's character in a meaningful way, rather than be imposed as a necessity to promote the latest L'Arc En Ciel album.
Let's say that you're the musical director for the third season of GSG, and you've been granted carte blanche by the producers to introduce whatever sound you think is appropriate. What music would you select for the OP? An opening sequence tends to be visually polished which is one source of appeal, but combined with the music it must describe the show, encapsulate its spirit, inform the viewers what to expect, set the atmosphere and tone and fix it in their minds.
-------------------------------------
-------------------------------------
Muse - "Undisclosed Desires"
I've not been a great fan of Muse in the past, but their latest album, The Resistance, bowled me over. It might not be Desert Island Disc material, but it's most certainly rocketed up to a high place in my list of favourites. One song in particular though stands out as especially fitting for GSG:
[LINK TO MUSIC VIDEO]
Youtube Version:
As well as having a distinctive sound some way removed from J-Pop, listen to the lyrics:
I know you've suffered
But I don't want you to hide
It's cold and loveless
I won't let you be denied
Soothing
I'll make you feel pure
Trust me
You can be sure
I want to reconcile the violence in your heart
I want to recognise your beauty's not just a mask
I want to exorcise the demons from your past
I want to satisfy the undisclosed desires in your heart
You trick your lovers
That you're wicked and divine
You may be a sinner
But your innocence is mine
Please me
Show me how it's done
Tease me
You are the one
I want to reconcile the violence in your heart
I want to recognise your beauty's not just a mask
I want to exorcise the demons from your past
I want to satisfy the undisclosed desires in your heart
It describes the tragedy-afflicted past of a cyborg, the fighting that punctuates their current existence, and the strange relationship between handler and cyborg - exploitative on the one hand, but caring and selfless from a different perspective - remarkably closely. Moreover, as a pleasing convenience the first verse and chorus neatly fit inside one and a half minutes, the traditional length for an OP sequence!

What other music do you think would be a suitable sort for the show?

Is this the song that you're talking about?
Hmmm.
The lyrics fit without a doubt, but the music itself seems too allagrando - very broad and unhurried, ballad-like. It's the sort of thing that you hold up your Zippos to at the end of a concert, not the entry number. It'd do well as an ED certainly.

Re: Gunslinger Girl Three: A New OP
Yeah, the lyrics were the primary basis for my pick. A secondary reason would be the tone; it sounds outwardly happy, but a closer listen will detect sadness/wistfulness beneath that major key. Pretty much like the girls' lives are. And as for the ballad-like rhythm - hey, 'The Light Before We Land' was very ballad-like, too.

I think Worker's Song by the Dropkick Murphys sorta fits:
Primarily based on the lyrics of the chorus and first and third verse.

Fair point, well-presented.
I think Worker's Song by the Dropkick Murphys sorta fits:
It's a bit... gregarious. Also, while you can say that the cyborgs are victims of exploitation, enjoying high culture and having all manner of elite largesse lavished on them as they do I don't think that they can be presented as the downtrodden proletariat!

Re: Gunslinger Girl Three: A New OP
Well, I'm not much of a fan of rap so my position on that song would be a bit skewed - I'll leave the judging to others there!
Here's another candidate that occured to me:
-------------
-------------
The Killers - "Human"
This is another song made by the lyrics. At the very least, there's the blindingly obvious questioning of self ("Are we human or are we denser?") - so on the nose that it's really a bit bland and banal. However, there is a degree of involving subtlety beyond it. "My sign is vital / My hands are cold" can represent the cyborgs' physical nature - alive, but with no natural bodies to conduct their warmth. The second verse in particular though is the key to this song's suitability, wonderfully apposite in describing the essential duality of the girls. They're abandoning all noble and virtuous qualities, but being extraordinarily helpful and polite about it ("Send my condolences to good / Give my regards to soul and romance") - which is a rather poetric expression of girls who have impeccable table manners and take tea but have bodycounts bigger than a machine-gunner on the Somme...

Re: Gunslinger Girl Three: A New OP
its are we human are we dancer
Human Lyrics
I did my best to notice
When the call came down the line
Up to the platform of surrender
I was brought but I was kind
And sometimes I get nervous
When I see an open door
Close your eyes
Clear your heart...
Cut the cord
Are we human?
Or are we dancer?
My sign is vital
My hands are cold
And I'm on my knees
Looking for the answer
Are we human?
Or are we dancer?
Pay my respects to grace and virtue
Send my condolences to good
Give my regards to soul and romance,
They always did the best they could
And so long to devotion
You taught me everything I know
Wave goodbye
Wish me well..
You've gotta let me go
Are we human?
Or are we dancer?
My sign is vital
My hands are cold
And I'm on my knees
Looking for the answer
Are we human?
Or are we dancer?
Will your system be alright
When you dream of home tonight?
There is no message we're receiving
Let me know is your heart still beating
Are we human?
Or are we dancer?
My sign is vital
My hands are cold
And I'm on my knees

This one...
Seriously though... keeping the tradition of using little indie bands: The Jezabels - Hurt Me
Personally I prefered their first EP to the one this is off, but I do love this particular song.

Re: Gunslinger Girl Three: A New OP
Would love to post a video but I don't have anything comparable to this, that song just screams OP material, nice find
I do want to nitpick about something though:
I see what you mean, but kokia isn't exactly an idol like a lot of other anime OP singers out there, she's a japanese indie artist, and I mean that literaly:she isn't signed to a major label.
In her 10 year career she had never done an anime OP before il teatrino.
So it's not as original as chosing the delgados but I still think it's more original than a lot of other OPs
I do want to nitpick about something though:
Robert Frazer wrote:While I enjoyed Kokia's theme for Il Teatrino - it's an enjoyable song on its own merits - one of the reasons why the Madhouse GSG anime was so memorable was because of its uniquely atypical OP; selecting a barely-heard Scottish indie band definitely couldn't be said to be a lucrative sponsorship deal! Re: Gunslinger Girl Three: A New OP
Well, I'm determined to actually be active in this community for a change so here we go...
One of my choices would be the song Lamp Halo by Zeromancer. The video below is a Gunslinger Girl AMV done by Kisanzi using this song. Lyrics below the vid.
It's my life
Yeah I know
It's not a perfect one, but
It's a life
I can live with
It's my life
Yeah I know
It's not a perfect one, but
It's a life
I can live with
But you don't know
If you can
And you don't know
If you want
Cause you don't know
If I'm the right one
And you don't know
Well let me tell you
There's
Something inside
That's freaking me out
Please don't
Leave me alone
Something inside me
Is wearing me out
Please don't
Don't do it again
Just like a fly
On a jar
Twinkle, twinkle little star
You don't feel like you belong here
But it's your life
Even though
It's not perfect
It's a life you can live with
But you don't know
If you can
And you don't know
Well let me tell you
There's
Something inside
That's freaking me out

I'm also thinking "Wasted Life" by Stiff Little Fingers:
The version on the Inflammable Material album is better, IMO.

Re: Gunslinger Girl Three: A New OP
To revive a topic:
this piece really wouldn't be at all suitable as a theme, but I can see it being used as a backing for the series trailer:
It might be cheating a little, to purloin music from another anime... but, eh, not so long ago everyone, his mate, his dog and his mistress was licensing Clint Mansell's "Lux Aeterna" for everything from dramatic film scores to sports result jingles, so I think that it can be excused!
The music may sound rather too deliberately "epic" for GSG which is, after all, fairly small-scale in its drama. Skirmishes in villas and alleyways don't really compare to giant robots beating the seven bells out of each other while crashing through tower blocks and ripping chunks out of mountains. Still, I can picture it being set to sweeping tracking shots of Italian cityscapes, interpsed with fratelli skulking about in the shadow of various historic landmarks and bearing laden, impassive gazes staring sombrely into the middle distance; the swelling orchestral refrains can have the explosive flashes of action set against Henrietta going to work on her violin. The lyrics are again, one which prove to be fitting and adaptable to the cyborgs' situation, with the verses variously bringing up moral questions, the sense of a scripted and controlled life, and the desire to see thing through because it's what we must.

Re: Gunslinger Girl Three: A New OP
I just heard this for the first time on the supermarket radio while I was out provisioning this afternoon - it honestly and literally struck me to a dead stop in the middle of the aisle, I found its ethereal tone that arresting. Reading around, the Ocean Eyes album that this song came from came in for something of a critical savaging as musical authorities declared that it was either too watery and anodyne, or else that Adam Young was a heretic against indie. Have a look at this review - it's nothing short of amazing to see just how angry the reviewer is, and then how earnest the comments both for and against are that follow. Young certainly succeeded in animating people, which I suppose makes him a success as a musician!
Regardless of the song's status on Metacritic, though, I think that it's beautiful:
It's something else that fits well with GSG, too - the backdrop of J&H stargazing is the most obvious allusion, of course, but the general wistful tone of not wishing potential to fade also infuses the series. The song perhaps a little too whimsical and laidback to suit an OP, but it'd definitely make a viable ED.

Gah! The first two verses of that song go over the magic TV-edit 1:30 length by just a couple of seconds! It would have been a neat fit otherwise...!
Anyway, the latter half of the song probably wouldn't go over very well - it's a bit overtly anti-establishment, and GSG doesn't really dwell on the exploitation angle and concentrates on different parts of the girls' lives instead. I agree through that the opening half, with the rueful remarks about no change in the lyrics reflecting the struggle against that endless cycle of revenge and retaliation, would be a strong ED candidate.

True enough. The first verse and chorus alone would be great, which is why I nominated it. Anything past that would be a bit overkill.

Re: Gunslinger Girl Three: A New OP
A bit off-topic, but if they ever ever animate the sequence of the assault on the bell tower in Venice, please, god, let this be the soundtrack to the slaughter:
If you're gonna send cyborgs off to die, this is the most appropriate soundtrack considering the overall tactical disadvantage the Agency and GIS had. To me, 'The Trooper' embodies the entire atmosphere of the situation. It was a suicidal gamble, yet they did it anyway, and even though the Agency and GIS had a fair number of losses, they didn't give up the initiative and went through with the attack--right up to the point the warhead was blown to bits, taking pieces of the tower (and Beatrice) with it.

Not a bad choice; I'd have gone for the 'Disposable Heroes' from Metallica myself, or perhaps 'Paschendale' (also by Iron Maiden). The former's more hellish, the latter more grim/poignant (Trooper sounds almost exuberant compared to these two).

Well, when choosing 'The Trooper', I thought back to the sequence in the Manga; it's quick, violent, and as 'The Trooper' is partially based off Lord Tennyson's poem, shines a light on the simultaneous courage and tragedy of the ill-fated assault.

I'd think you'd want a fast-paced tempo since the girls would be like mongooses amongst cobras.

I took a nap while listening to Dylan today, and when I woke up, Just Like a Woman was playing. It occurred to me that it might (if shortened considerably) fit pretty well with GsG.

Re: Gunslinger Girl Three: A New OP
The last of The Jezabels trilogy of EPs Dark Storm arrived in the mail today.
This is me... picking my jaw up off the floor. Their second release She's so Hard didn't do that much for me, but this one... just wow. I think either of the first two tracks would be suitable as an OP. Not sure about the lyrics, and to be honest I don't really care. It's melancholy, uplifting and massively powerful.
Turn it up.
Dark Storm (title track)
And the one that's been playing on the J's as promo Mace Spray (I think you can still download it free off the Triple J website too)

Re: Gunslinger Girl Three: A New OP
If the third series of the GSG anime was going to focus exclusively on Petrushka, I've had a couple of ideas about how an OP would be directed.
One is to set it to Evanescence's "Bring Me To Life" - while it might be overused on the AMV circuit and it's a bit overwrought, it does reflect the general theme of the cyborgs and their relationships with their handlers. The sort of scene that I envisage would be to set the OP in a theatre - initially Elisabeta is up on the stage, blinking under the glare of the lights, while the camera slowly pans around handlers scattered about the seating and cuts briefly to off-centre shots of the younger cyborgs playing the piano and violin backing tracks. The stage's backdrop isn't composed of the usual plywood trees and barber shops, though, but rather targets. When the music reaches the first chorus, Elisabeta's transformed into Petrushka and proceeds to demolish the stage fittings, while Alessandro walks down the central aisle. It ends with the two staring at each other, and Alessandro applauding - slowly.
As the indie alternative, though, I've just been introduced to the band Shiny Toy Guns, and their track "You Are The One":
This one reflects Alessandro more than it does Petrushka, and I think that it conveys well his particular situation in the shadow-world of espionage, and his own confusion about his will and direction in life, and how the arrival of this fascinating and beguiling and maddening and threatening red-headed creature in his midst is turning it all into a tumult. As for OP direction, I could see it being spread across a variety of Italian landmarks - against the grey masses of tourists drifting through them, the coloured fratello are separated by distance, but there's always a crimson thread - cutting through the bystanders - connecting them and gradually pulling shorter between shots.

Nightwish - Dead to the World
I was recently introduced to the band Nightwish - while a metal group might seem to be quite at odds with Gunslinger Girl's artfully understated character, I think that they have a symphonic, lyrical quality which does resonate with the same spirit. The lyrics of this song in particular seem astonishingly fitting for describing the nature of the secret war that the Agency fights and the desperate, driving need for revenge, as necessary as it is painful ("I don't want to die a scarless man"), the weird paradoxes that cement together the unnatural cyborgs ("I studied silence to learn the music, I joined the sinful to regain innocence"), and the intense and heartfelt relationships of the fratelli which only exist because of a world of suffering ("such precious joy is dead to the world") and how the handlers both use and are redeemed by their selflessness ("As he died, he will return to die in me again... who gave his life not for the world but for me, innocence reborn once more"). Even those "he"s and "boy"s aren't that much of a problem given that half the cyborgs have boys' names in the first place!

In light of how bombastic some of the recent developments in GSG have been, I don't think a metal OP would be out of place at all.

Re: Gunslinger Girl Three: A New OP
MP5: I can see that track accompanying a montage of the girls going about their daily lives on the compound, maybe with the bright light and long shadows of an afternoon sun, or dragging their handlers around the streets of Rome while off-duty.
sdp2501: I think that the tone of overt rebellion goes a bit beyond what the cyborgs are capable of, but it could be used as incidental music during a dramatic scene - maybe if Pia's story is ever animated?
U2 - I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For
I've been clearing some space out and ripping old CDs so I can sell them off, and I unearthed Joshua Tree, an old U2 album (CD vintage 1987... I wonder if there'll ever be compact fanciers in the way there's a vinyl trade today). I never really got into U2, but listening to the music here I notice that it has a similar sort of quiet sober melancholy which is keeping with the spirit of the original Delgados OP, and the lyrics have a suitable sense of dislocation and of existing in an transitory state of the Agency's hidden half-lives.

On that note:
The Day You Died
Arch Enemy
Lyrics:
A precious child with an innocent mind
Born to suffer, in this life or for another
So hopeless and relentless falls this remorseless world
The remains of a violent world
Chorus:
The day you died my tears ran dry
I feel you, I hear you echo in my soul
I failed you, I miss you so
The day you died echoes in my soul
This worlds on fire-turned its back on us
A lost horizon left behind
So hopeless and relentless falls this remorseless day
The dark reality of a hostile world
Repeat Chorus
Bridge
Repeat Chorus
Fits particularly well with Enrica, Elsa, Angie, Beatrice, Silvia, Chiara, and now,

If you want to be overly tongue-in-cheek/completely unoriginal, how about an ED that may suggest a hint as to how a candidate undergoes the cybernetic augmentation process?

It's not sinister enough. Using that song would give the impression that the conversion is a fun, positive process.

Wait, you mean it isn't?!
Joking aside, you can make it a bit more sinister by generating lyrical dissonance-- the almost manufactured process used in the music video could be copied at least partially, for example, replacing a candidate's childhood memories with something like 'combat programming' or what have you. I don't know what kind of argument to make for using that Daft Punk song except maybe for just using it in an ironic manner.

Copying the video's 'manufacturing process' is fine, but the song remains too upbeat, too cheery. Irony is fine by me, though.

British Sea Power - Lights Out For Darker Skies
The reasoning behind including this song is a relatively simple one - it's another entry that ticks the boxes to be added to the list of mellow, lyrical, melancholy-tinged offbeat indie rock. It also has an assortment of lyrics that can be easily adapted to a theme of wretched compromise and the strange beauty of desperation and destruction, and I also love the image of deadly delicacy evoked by the line "dance like sparks from a muzzle".

I have this song on my Sansa, and while listening to it, I thought this song by Megan Washington might fit the kind of bill that 'The Light Before We Land' by The Delgados would:

As much as I'm a massive fan of our Megan... I'm not sure if "How to Tame Lions" would work for an OP... possibly and ED.
In that vein, I think Pirouette by Lisa Mitchell would be suitable as well.

Muse - Starlight
I've represented Muse on this thread before, but I must return to them. Muse is an intriguing prospect: with tremendous showboating live sets and a raft of Gold albums they are as popular and mainstream as you can be, but with their scruffy appearance they still retain an indie sensibility, and with their classical roots and musical structure there's always the suggestion of something grand and frim rising up from underneath the effervescence. With all of these layers in their work they really do strike me as one of the ideal bands to represent the character of GSG. They also contribute to this with introspective, reflective themes that suit the generally slower pace of the show and its focus on expressing states of character. As well as having lyrics that could easily be construed as direct references ("All the souls that would die just to feel alive"), "Starlight" takes a tale of alienation and makes it an anthem - it seems designed for GSG and its terrible grandeur, cracks shot through the beauty of Italy.
