Character System

It's all handwaving. The numbers are just guidelines, and there aren't any dice mechanics. It's all just soft-and-fuzzy guidelines for writing, and how the normies react to your characters.

Attribute Names

When attempting some potentially difficult task, the PC's relevant attribute score will be compared to the difficulty score for the task, or the opposing NPC's relevant attribute value. 

Strength is carrying capacity, damage dealt, and anything dealing with outbound physical force once contact is made. Don't worry about this too much; the average cyborg PC can do just about anything up to punching boulders to pieces.

Health is hit points, endurance, poison resistance, and anything dealing with inbound physical force once contact is made.

Agility is reaction speed, accuracy, and the chance inbound or outbound physical contact is made. Don't worry about this too much; the average cyborg PC will absolutely, always win unless they want to fail for some reason, or they're against another PC.

Wisdom is determination, common sense, interpersonal skills, mana, psychological resilience/recovery, and anything dealing with outbound mental/magical/mumbo-jumbo force, including chance of making contact.

Intelligence is memory, perception, non-interactive skills, ki, sanity points, and anything dealing with inbound mental/magical/mumbo-jumbo force, including chance of evading contact if the PC wants to dodge something.

Exceptions

Due to the wide spectrum of mental/magical/mumbo-jumbo forces, sometimes the whole Wisdom is for outbound, Intelligence is for inbound generalization doesn't work:

  • Mind control would be attacker's determination (Wisdom) against defender's psychological resilience (also Wisdom), so Wisdom is used for both inbound and outbound.

  • Interrupting or disrupting an attacker's spell would be the defender's perception and knowledge of magic which are both Intelligence, but used outbound against the attacker's Wisdom because that's the attribute most offensive spells use.

  • Trying to get information out of an unsuspecting NPC, the defender in this case, would be Intelligence used both inbound and outbound.


Again, don't get too wrapped up in it. The attribute names and numbers are just guidelines for us all to get a sense for who is good or bad at what. Speaking of which...

Numbers

Scale is 0 - 20+. Anything less than 0 is means the character is sick or dying from lacking whatever that attribute is. -10 is dead from lack of that attribute. Examples below are relative to humans, not drow, titans, etc.  Child is a kid about the PC's age.

0: Newborn. 

3: Unhealthy child. Lower-class kid's education, dealing with nobility, etc.

5: Average middle-class child.

7-8: Exceptional child, or nerfed adult.

10: Healthy normal adult.

13: "Very good at it" adult. One of the best in a group of middle-class friends.

15: Exceptional. One of the best in town.

18: Champion. One of the best in the land. Internationally-famous for this attribute.

20: Legendary. One of the best of all time. Most people don't believe the stories of what s/he has done in that area.

Don't worry about who is greater than who. These are about as precise as four bags on a grassy plain setting boundaries for out-of-bounds in a friendly game of soccer.

Starting Characters

The average starting character will be a 10-year-old orphan from a poor family living in a struggling orphanage.

Basic Skills

Unless the player says otherwise, these will be the default competencies, education, and social skills for PCs

Speech - Their pronunciation will have a lower-class accent. Their vocabulary won't include be very large. They will use idioms and colloquialisms that may be confusing to others not in their economic class.

Literacy - They will be able to read and write simple sentences in this world's common language, but won't understand royal decrees, literal text of laws, or advanced magical / pseudo-scientific words. The PCs will still remember how to speak and write in Italian, so that can be used as a PCs-only code.

Etiquette - They will be obviously out-of-place in downtown stores, and will not be able to comport themselves according to upper-class social etiquette.  

Loadout

The PCs will have magical or steampunk-tech weapons of equivalent function as their SWA-world gear. They will have magical tattoos on their limbs that are only visible to high-level magic users to explain away their superhuman strength and reflexes. Their plate carriers / tactical vests become magical jackets that are nearly indestructible with in-game weapons.

Description


Pre-PC Background

Who were the orphan's parents? Other siblings, extended family, or close friends?
How did the character become an orphan? Dropped off because the family was too poor to feed everyone? Ran away from home? Single parent too sick to care for the character?
Are any NPCs who regularly interacted with the character before she died?
Are there any NPCs searching for the character, unsuccessfully so far? (To put on the throne, to kill, to make rich, whatever.)
How did the character previously react to the other people at the orphanage? Did she hate one of the other orphans who is now a PC?
How did the character act in the orphanage before they died? Helpful? Catatonic? Imaginative, annoyingly optimistic, and unrealistic?

Note: this is not your PC's history. This is the history of the deceased orphan whose body you are now living in, but before they died and got resurrected as your PC's meat-suit.

Physical Appearance

What does the character look like? By default, s/he'll look the same as when they were an SWA cyborg, but this VR MMO program is buggy as fuck, so anything can happen so long as they're still human/elf/dwarf mix.
What are they wearing?
What are they carrying? What interesting things do they have hidden?

Personality

What do they love or like? How do they show their appreciation?
What don't they like or that they hate? How do they react to those things?
What do they feel like about the society? What do they feel about being dropped into this mess?
