Anything by Heckler & Koch.

Some of their stuff is okay, but their company attitude towards civilians is a thing of legend. I've heard stories of H&K pistols failing, to which their warranty number says "sorry, but you're obviously mistaken and just not using it right."
INteresting column here

My favorites that I own?
Mosin Nagant 91/30- The only rifle you can stab, shoot, or club your enemies all day long with and it'll never stop working.

S&W 686 4" .357- Absolutely fine piece of stainless steel. Dream to shoot.

S&W M&P 40- Love it.

Stoeger Cougar 9mm- The best "knock-off" gun I've ever found. All the fun and function of a Beretta, half the price.

Forgot to mention the Parabellum P08 in my vintage guns list. Go Luger.

Mav, I'm curious - how well does the Mosin hold up against other bolt-actions of its day, like, say, the Mauser or the Enfield?

?

Is this a serious question of performance or one of illustrating my personal bias? Smile
Performance wise the Mosin is average among the peers. Like most bolts, reliability of action is pretty damn good. It's simple and effective. my understanding is that the interrupter in the receiver was a fairly new concept when the design came around, something that other bolts of the day did not have and resulted in rim-lock jams.
Sights are adequate for the purpose, and in some cases the Soviet snipers used open sights rather than scopes. Even then, the PU scopes were very basic.
Accuracy was variable then and still is. It's a cheap, cobbled together rifle produced under considerable stress and time constraints. In the pre-war models, they are well-built and extremely accurate, as time was taken in their construction and fitting. That quality suffered, sometimes considerably, when they were jamming them out the door with almost no regard to how they performed beyond 100 yards, just to get them into conscript hands. Careful picking now can find good to great accuracy in "ugly" Mosins, and careless looking can find horrid performance in "pretty" ones.
My comment earlier was mainly in regard to ruggedness of the gun as a whole. It was, literally, designed to shoot first, stab if need be, and club the hell out of someone if all else fails. To that end, the steel butt-plate on it did the job well.
Enfields and K98s both probably have better collective accuracy than the Mosin, simply because of the methods and quality of production. I don't think I've ever heard of a crappy accuracy K98, and I've only heard a few gripes about certain models of Enfields being of lesser quality, mainly for the same reasons as the Mosin.
The K98's functionality is a bit less "user friendly" than the Mosin. Some have mentioned the safety on the K98 being loud and inconvenient in a hunting role.
The "big three" bolt rifles back then were largely equal in terms of effectiveness as a shooter. I'd still choose a good Mosin, though, if I figured to be in bayonette range of the enemy.

How about both. favorite guns 684325

But thanks for outlining the Mosin's benefits - looks like that baby was the Kalashnikov of its day. Although I feel that if you're close enough to club or bayonet the other guy, you're too close period. I've seen some pretty spectacular fireballs result from firing the Mosin in low light; does this get problematic, and does it at all equal heavy muzzle blast?

I don't know about how loud the Mauser's safety can get; when I handled one way back then, I carefully operated it with two fingers, turning it down instead of slapping it down (I was a noob, you see, and opted to work the thing very gingerly) and that didn't produce much noise as I remember. Perhaps hunters ought to do the same? In the end, however, I think I'd rather have a deer get spooked by the 'click' than have the rifle accidentally going off on me.

In Mosins, there are the long-barreled 91/30 (and variants) and the carbine-length M44 (actually a variant of the M38 from 1939).

the 91/30 originated in 1891 and was largely updated in 1930 (hence the designation M91/30). The Finns made the M24 variant(some of the most accurate due to Swiss and German barrels).
The 91/30 is long and somewhat heavy, resulting in little recoil if braced properly. Accuracy is good to 200 yards easy, and further with practice and skill. A joke I've used is that the 91/30 was designed to reach across the Volga and stab the Nazi's with the bayonet, rather than shoot them. They're pretty long with the pig-sticker attached.

The M44 is fun to shoot, but can beat you up. The shorter length results in about twice the felt recoil of the 91/30, not to mention increasing the report and muzzle flash. When I want to impress someone with a rifle's sound, I break out the M44. Standing at the shooter's four-o-clock, at ten feet, you feel a thump in your chest when it fires. Muzzle flash can also extend a couple of feet out of the barrel, depending on the load. If not positioned right, the butt-plate on it will bruise the shoulder, something I found out first hand and suffered from for a week.
An interesting side-effect of the M44's shorter barrel and bayonet combo is a drastic change in the barrel harmonics. They tend to shoot 2" left at 100yds unless the sticker is extended. I don't think the other, non-integral shorts had the same problem, but I could be wrong.

Revenge IS a dish that is best served cold.

I see no reason not to include a side salad and maybe some breadsticks as well.
