Also, Catwoman. Interesting take on doing the ears... and it's moments like these I regret not giving Monty more curves.

Director Tony Scott, younger brother of fellow director Ridley Scott, committed suicide Sunday evening when he jumped off the Vincent Thomas Bridge spanning Los Angeles Harbor. It is reported that he was diagnosed with inoperable brain cancer and this might have contributed to his decision to take his own life.

Some of Scott's more famous films include: The Hunger, Top Gun, Beverly Hills Cop II, Days of Thunder, The Last Boy Scout, True Romance, Crimson Tide, Enemy of the State, Spy Game, Man on Fire, Déjà Vu, The Taking of Pelham 123, and Unstoppable.

First Squad is good, but not great - entertaining for one watch but lacks lastability. It spends a lot of time introducing concepts and by leaving cliffhangers it seems more like a pilot for a TV show or OVA series than a film in its own right - there is a seed of potential there, though, even if it didn't germinate in Russia's cold soil. Ah well, something else to put on the list of "things to spend a lottery win on."

In other movie news, I watched the new Dredd tonight - despite my initial misgivings, it's actually a solid film. It looks lovely - there's great misé en scene with a credible vision of a dilapidated future adapted for the real world, and there's another feature that's rarer than hen's teeth... the 3D effects are superb and add to the intensity of the experience. The Slo-Mo sequences are genuinely captivating (the water playing around Ma-Ma in the bath is beautiful) and not overplayed. The content is pitched at the right level - it's entertaining for the squaxx to see the city realised in a different way, and accessible for the nonscrots who can walk into the cinema without needing a setting bible. It's not perfect - the story's perfunctory, it exaggerated the relentless grim darkness and disregarded the lighter side to MC1, and the characters (even Dredd) could have been more expressive - but it's a strong, muscular, uncompromising action flick that hits its marks confidently. A firm 8/10.

Dredd is opening in the US tonight, and I definitely think that it's worth a watch. If you do intend to go an see it, it's best to catch it in the cinema - I think that it would lose a lot of its presence on a television.

The Avengers

Get an editor, Whedon. You could have cut at least an hour out of that film and it would have been far better for it. I mean two hours of set-up? bang head

Then again, Nolan was even worse with The Dark Knight Rises, so maybe this is the new trend... W\'ever Doesn't exactly instill confidence for Man of Steel, though.

On the plus side, you do action better than Bay. I could at least follow what was going on. Good

To celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of Dr. No, an image showing the number of kills by James Bond in official movies. Using data provided by The Guardian, the image pays homage to the wonderful opening titles to Dr. No by Maurice Binder.

That sounds like it's worth a watch. I usually don't enjoy action films but the first Taken was a welcome exception...Liam Neeson is great in everything he does.

Post by Robert Frazer Wed 10 Oct 2012 - 22:36

Looking for something to share my ice-cream with this evening I dusted down a DVD of Cypher, directed by Vincenzo Natali (of Cube fame). It's probably sat on my shelf for eight years now! I remember being absolutely bowled over and mesmerised by it when I first watched it - going back to it now, it's not as good as I remember and the seams are a little frayed, but it's still an engaging and meaningful story that gets a lot of mileage out of a low budget. Lucy Liu plays a supporting role against type but the lead Jeremy Northram also gives a stunning layered performance, where one character assumes five different guises. His early scenes, where he's a meek milquetoast accountant lamely trying to puff himself up as a jet-setting playboy, are uncannily well-observed.

It has a nicely detailed DVD commentary, too - in fact, the speakers carry on after the film itself has ended, something I've never seen before!

It was pretty attrocious... though the theme was great and they at least (from memory, it's been awhile) gave Bond the correct car.

Dunno. What made 'Episode III' so lame was having to steer the plot towards the events of the earlier, but chronologically later, episodes. If Disney holds to Lucas's original plan, Epis VII, VIII and IX will be about the creation of a new Republic, possibly with all new characters and with the writers hands untied. It just might redeem the series the way 'Casino Royale' did the Bond franchise.

As part of the deal, Disney announced a third Star Wars trilogy has been commissioned, with Star Wars: Episode 07 scheduled for release in 2015.

Good Lord, we should have killed it before it got the chance to breed... again.

Dunno, I didn't really like Casino Royale that much. But it was a while ago that I watched it and I didn't really pay attention so I guess I'd better watch it again.

All new characters? Writers' hands untied? Whatchoo talking about, man? This is ripe time to film the Expanded Universe post-ROTJ material. Thrawn's reign, Dark Empire, the courtship of Princess Leia, the works.

Mark, Harrison and Carrie are all way too old to play their characters in the Expanded Universe. We're probably looking at their kids or grandkids.

Maggie Gyllenhaal can stand in for Carrie. They look almost alike. I'm sure there must be other people they can use for Luke and Han. Doubt anyone will give a shit, as long as the actors are good.

Failing that, they can go Avatar on our asses and use CG.

Or they could just to an Indiana Jones and set everything far enough in the future that everyone has aged accordingly (because that movie worked out so well and all...) Films Everything 70464

I'm with this right here. Use of the Yuuzhan Vong War would be excellent in this scope, but the excellent stories from the Legacy of the Force novel series would prove more to the point in my opinion.

I for one wouldn't mind seeing an animated version of the 'Great Sith War' and seeing Exar Kun, my favorite Sith Lord, become the first to use a double-bladed lightsaber.

Meh. I'm tired of people trying to milk the franchise. Let it die, because it's cursed. I loathe everything that came out after Jedi, and Jedi wasn't that strong of a film in the first place.

The first trilogy, and what I saw of the Clone Wars (the movie, under obligation) were lacking the key element from the original trilogy - humour. One liners. Zingers.

===

On an unrelated note, I saw Wreck-it Ralph and it was fantastic. The lead games aren't real properties, but they are strongly reminiscent of quarter-vacuums I've played in my youth.

See it!

Honestly, they can't do worse than Lucas and letting folks like J.J. Abrams have a hand in it might come up with something amazing.
