Hearing the critics rave about The Hurt Locker, I decided to give it a shot.
Initially I expected to see your typical American war movie - tough talking, rough guys, heroism, evil Iraqi/Vietnamese/German... you know, the usual stuff when you watch movies like Rambo, Saving Private Ryan or Platoon. This movie, however, takes a completely different approach. A must-watch.

Re: Films Everything
Was finally able to see The Girl Who Leapt Through Time [時をかける少女] last night.
A+. 11/10.
One of the most brilliant and beautiful animated films I have ever seen. Ranks right up there with Miyazaki's and Shinkai's works in my "Anime Masterpieces". The studios who did the background art are worthy of working on a Studio Ghibli production. Some of the character animation was from the SHAFT School of Suckage, but I forgive it. I'm crushed there is no US Blu-ray release, but the Japanese one is only about $75 so I'm picking it up and ordering the US Limited Edition DVD set.
We're going to watch Summer Wars [サマーウォーズ] today, and I can't wait.

Well, what a coincidence,I was just about to post this trailer for a 2010 live action "the girl who leapt through time" adaptation
Not sure how it will turn out, since it's the same concept but not the same plot, the actress who played makoto is also the lead in this one and that's a big plus in my book!

Hmm... Japanese Live Action adaptions don't seem to go well, but with the original seiyuu playing the same role, I'll definitely catch it.

@ Plan 9
-It will only be epic if Kevin Smith is involved.
@Inglourious Bastards
-It's on my to watch list.
@ The Girl who Lept Through Time.
-LOLZ and Awwz, that's all I have to say on that. With the exception of the LA; if there ain't a shit-ton of falls, I don't want to see it.
@ Summer Wars
-Just read the summary and reviews on AnimeDB, and it looks damn interesting.
Tomorrow I must go to see Avatar. So far, most folks I've heard say it ain't nothing special. But it's a James Cameron movie; it has to be at least good.

I saw Sherlock Holmes and really enjoyed it. Had a good amount of action, comedy, and mystery throughout the whole movie. Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law have awesome chemistry together.
On a random note, I found a loose seat cushion from one of the seats and placed it in the seat in front of me to try divert people from sitting there (so they think it was broken). The result? It worked! I suppose it also helped the theater wasn't that crowded, but it made my movie experience much better.

And it just so happens that Madhouse (who did GsG) animated it. Congratulations to Mamoru Hosoda for directing such an awesome movie, of course. Summer Wars is also great, but not quite as... touching.

Just finished The Man From Earth. Written by sci-fi writer Jerome Bixby, who penned amongst other scripts "Mirror, Mirror" from Star Trek (TOS) and "It's a Good Life" from The Twilight Zone. He also co-wrote the original story of The Fantastic Voyage (Isaac Asimov wrote the novelization of the movie).
I found it a stunning piece of work.

I see the guy who directed Cloverfield is helming a remake of Let The Right One In.
Titled Let Me In, it has Hit Girl's Chloe Moretz playing the role of Eli and The Road's Kodi Smit-McPhee as Oskar. Though now it's Abbey and Owen since it takes place in New Mexico instead of Sweden.
Personally, call me very skeptical. The original was awesome and while I applaud keeping it as kids (as opposed to trying to cash in with the "Twilight Teens"), I didn't find Cloverfield to be all that great...

I agree. Cloverfield is what I call a one-timer.
Meaning that it's okay so long as you watch it ONCE. After that the 'experience' as it were will where off quick and it is nothing more than a Unisom pill that takes WAY too long to take effect.
Ironically most movies like that are the 'experience films' that make up most of the pseudo-reality subgenre. Similar titles are Cannibal Holocaust, The St. Francisville Experiment, The Blair Witch Project, and Quarantine; among many, many others.
Although Quarantine is a re-make of Spain's REC, which was actually pretty damn good. Others like the hilariously bad Spinal Tap and the recent Paranormal Activity hit their niche audiences pretty well. As I've enjoyed both. Also, Dana Carvey's spoof of Spinal Tap(as a 'pretentious rock star') is a MUST see.

Well when The Blair Witch Project turns $50,000 into $50,000,000, you know Hollywood is going to ape the look as long and as hard as they can.
Now that Avatar, which cost some $400 million to make, is on course to make $4 billion, I expect that will become the new paradigm for the 2010s.

They probably wouldn't be able to.
Seriously, I have to expect the execs at FOX Studios are feeling a lot better knowing that they won't be taking a bath on the film. And sweeping the Oscars will be a nice cherry on top.

I will say it's refreshing to watch a fully CGI movie that isn't somehow involved with Disney/Pixar and is aimed at a more mature audience. I've gotten rather jaded with CGI children's movies. I love PIXAR because I believe they are the greatest storytellers of our time.
But I tried to watch Monsters vs. Aliens last night and had to eject the disc 30 minutes in.
PIXAR makes money because they tell great stories, not because they're CG. Renderman is actually a pretty shitty program at making realistic-looking humans - it's forte is inanimate objects. But PIXAR puts so much life in the characters, that they "look funny" doesn't matter.
Alas, Hollywood for the past decade has assumed "if it's CG, it will sell!" so we get crap, crap, and more crap, even if it looks really nice (Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within and Dinosaurs).

Re: Films Everything
Monsters vs. Aliens is what I believe to be Pixar's attempt to make a straight up kid's movie as opposed to a great story. To be honest, it is watchable so long as you keep that in mind. A lot of flash, bang, pop, WoW!, and pretty much little else.
On another not I just may be one of the twenty or so people in the world to have actually liked The Spirits Within. In fact that's how I've referred to it since I saw it a second time. Take Final Fantasy completely out of the equation and start with a blank slate. The story is a little rough to follow at times, but all in all it's a pretty heartfelt story...with a shitty ending. As far as I'm concerned, Advent Children is the definitive Final Fantasy movie.

PIXAR had nothing to do with Monsters vs. Aliens, which is one of the main reasons I thought it sucked.
As a technical exercise, Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within was amazing. But it was not something I had a burning desire to ever see again.

Neither did I at first. I saw it a second time as a bootleg when this one girl I was 'seeing' way back when bought it at a flea market, came to my house, and said, "Did you know they made a Final Fantasy movie?!"

I love hardcore gramer. Proper pluralization and conjunctions are a huge turn on! :p
Also, I didn't like Spirits Within. It just... wasn't that great. Or perhaps it's that everyone I know really, really likes it.
On another note, I haven't seen any movies in theatres lately. That means no Avatar and no Sherlock Holmes. I'm a little too lazy to see them I guess. People keep on raving about them, though. I should go watch one. Or both. At the same time!

Believe it or not, 'gramer' is an actualy term; a noun to be exact. Of course it's a piece of pop culture and actually first started showing up at MAGfest in 2002 around the time I stopped going to Con's, Expo's, Fest's, etc.; because of the increasingly growing factions of fans which really started messing up the vibe.
Basically, it's like this; a 'gramer' (pronounced just like 'gamer' with the added 'R' for emphasis) is the atypical 'jock' of all gamer-dom. These are the gamers who could play the latest FPS or popular sports titles such as Madden or NBA Live, or the gimmick games such as Army of Two, GTA(anything from 2 and up), and (input street racing themed game here). Button-mashing fighting games also seem to be popular with gramer's.
But ask most of them anything about Mario, Zelda, Sonic, Phantasy Star, Shining Force, Ninja Gaiden, Metroid, Goldeneye(I'm still having trouble getting a gramer to believe that there was epic FPS BEFORE Halo), Final Fantasy, System Shock, etc.; and they just look at you with either a confused or insulted look on their faces.
Hence the faction(ing).
At the time, a lot of old-school gamers started to notice that niche franchises like Doom, Quake, Unreal, Madden, Pro Skater, among others; were drawing newbies like the gamers who gobbled up anything that was cool or 'looked pretty' effectively dismissing what the old-schoolers called "the true aspect of gaming".
Personally, I didn't care either way. With the PS2 launch, I noticed the prices of games quickly exceeding $50-$60 and was confident that this influx of new fans and consumers would keep prices in check(I was wrong, but that's besides the point). However; when factions develop, terms come with the territory and thus the 'gramer' was born. More insult than label during it's inception, now like saying something is gay(which I've heard more actual gays use now instead of their straight counterparts) it is officially a label in the halls of video game lingo just like casual, hardcore, and extreme.
Sorry for the long post, but I've hoped I've answered any questions anybody might have.

...especially when ya tack 'hardcore' onto the beginning of it...
But thanks for the clarification. I thought you had made a typo.
Gramer equals any gamer who gives me cause to mutter about fuckin' kids like a grumpy old man, then.
...I've been shying away from gaming culture since shortly after Counterstrike got mind-numbingly popular.

I think what you are trying to say Kisk is that they’re going to take a fantastic movie and Americanize it. In other words, fuck it up.Kiskaloo wrote:I see the guy who directed Cloverfield is helming a remake of Let The Right One In.
I am looking forward to seeing Hit-Girl in Kick-Ass though.

Speaking of Avatar, finally caught it.
It is the dictionary definition of the word "spectacle".
If any film is going to drive the consumer adoption of three meter wide 3D LCD televisions, this is the one to do it.

Never much been a fan of post-apocolyptic films, probably because when the Apocalypse does come, I plan to be at Ground Zero to be sure I miss the "post" part.
That being said, this film is generating enough positive buzz to add it to my Netflix queue.

Re: Films Everything
Just got back from watching The Book of Eli and I have to say it was a lot better than I was expecting. I figured it would be a fairly typical "world gone to hell" action flick, but it had excellent atmosphere and really set a good tone. The movie has a few plot twists, and though I was somewhat suspecting it, they didn't lessen the overall impact.
Overall I'd give it a solid 4/5 (higher if you're a post-apoc fan).

I went to see Sherlock Holmes with my aunt yesterday and I have to say it wasn´t as bad as I expected it to be (cause I read that Holmes-fans would be disappointed)...it actually was really really nice...
Jude Law was an amazing Watson and I really liked Robert Downey Jr. as Holmes too.

Saw the live action adaption of Blood: The Last Vampire. Not bad, but nothing epic. My only previous experience with the story is the BLOOD+ TV series from Adult Swim, which I understand takes place decades later than (and in an alternate universe from) the "Blood: TLV" movies and manga.

For those who missed out on the Bargain Bin sale of the original ADV Ghost Stories DVDs, Section23 has re-released it as a box set. It's more expensive ($38), but The Right Stuff is throwing a 40% off sale on it (and other titles) through Sunday.

To me, that describes the film Ed Wood.
I was very pleased Martin Landau finally secured his Oscar for his performance in that film. And with Jeff Bridges finally about to secure his for Crazy Heart that just leaves the awesome Ed Harris as the only actor left that I feel the Academy has been criminal in it's snubbing of.

No,they actually want to make it a serious movie, and considering they're an indie company on a low budget,i expect it to also be in the "so bad it's good" category"
Saw "Mother" yesterday,really enjoyed it
