Verb for "Pfft"?

Okay, so my mate today asked me what the verb for going "pfft" is. It isn't groaning, or sighing, or... (I can't think of another example), and it has been stuck with me all day! Plaese, if anyone think they could help, that'd be great... because I am going to lose sleep over this, I just know it.

Also, he asked me to ask you wise folk here on the forum. (I've ben trying to convinc him to just join, but it ain't going so well.)

Anyhow, any help will be much appreciated.

I just go: "pffted"

So for example:

"Pfft, that's rich," pffted Caterina. "You can't just make up words for the English Language."

Instead of pffted, I would recommend dismissed.

Unless the sound is critical to the scene, I'd just write around it.

My mate says thanks and that he'll go with scoff.

I'd either say scoff or snort. As in "John snorted with derision, then shotgunned the beer."

pfft can be derived as sort of sarcastic tone...just like GsG vol 9, Gattonero mentioned: "pfft, i curse people with overjoyed" or something like that to Petra, mocking her relation with sandro
