Does your gun shoot in water?
When Myth Busters did this, the guns blew up. Apparently like I have always said, Myth Busters experiments are made to fail so idiots would not take advantage of the situation.

Mythbusters successfully fired a SigSauer P239 in Episode 51: Myths Reopened, though the casing was not ejected from the gun, resulting in the weapon only being able to fire a single round. They also successfully fired a round from a Colt King Cobra and an M1 Garand. The barrel of the 12-gauge shotgun cracked on firing, but did not explode.

I tend to lump Mythbusters into the same category as Top Gear: their primary reason for being is to entertain rather than inform.ElfenMagix wrote:When Myth Busters did this, the guns blew up. I should point out: I'm totally cool with that, just so long as people remember not to take them as gospel.

Re: Does your gun shoot in water?
Seems like a waste of good fish-tanks.
My question is; how effective would a firearm be underwater? Even the German machine gun rounds fired down at the beaches in Normandy lost velocity and sank to the bottom after passing through only 3 feet of water. With that kind of range any cyborg worth her flippers and inflatable water-wings could more easily dispatch an opponent with her knife.
Heckler & Koch make something called the P11 that fires rocket powered darts and is allegedly accurate up to 15 meters underwater. Above water it's silent and works up to 50 meters.

Re: Does your gun shoot in water?
i would imagine that the shock wave of a gun going off underwater would be bad for the person using it ,in a lot of the Mythbusters episodes where they fire a gun underwater the shock wave cracks their tank. There is a special kit for Glocks that allows underwater firing though the range is only a few feet and the accuracy terrible

Per that episode of Mythbusters, the 9mm was lethal at 2 feet when fired underwater, compared to 8 feet when fired into water.
7.62x51mm NATO shatttered on impact when fired into water. When fired under water, the bullet went 6 feet.

Passing through three feet of water would've been enough to dispatch anyone floundering through the surf. Alternatively, they could've just sat tight and held their fire until the Allied troops stepped onto the sand.Professor Voodoo wrote:Even the German machine gun rounds fired down at the beaches in Normandy lost velocity and sank to the bottom after passing through only 3 feet of water.
Forget guns; I want to know how effective a ballistic knife would be underwater. One's best bet in an underwater tussle (how often do those happen, anyway?) would probably be a thing like a small ballistic knife or a miniature speargun.

Re: Does your gun shoot in water?
Generally speaking this is dependent on two factors.
One, bullet velocity. Any rifle that lobs a projectile at supersonic speeds is more or less guaranteed to explode. A handgun, which operates at much lower pressures will have much less of a tendency to do this, though the bullets will not be very effective underwater.
Second, operating system. A gas piston or direct impingement weapon can explode because the operating system is waterlogged. A recoil operated weapon like a handgun or HK rifle is not vulnerable to this.
