So this is kind of depressing...

Of course, this is all speculation, and though sourced, it's pretty unlikely (or so I hope) that a lot of the more extreme things here will happen.
Still, it makes you think. I certainly hope I won't be alive when the fecal matter hits the proverbial bladed wind machine.

Yeah, and they once predicted we'd be colonizing the galaxy by the year 2001.

I don't know I was looking at the list and some of these break throughs don't seem so bad. Also I like to think the better part of human nature will prevent some of these events from occuring. This also might have some usess in my classroom to spark debate.

I read much of the list and a lot of the stuff seemed good and natural, but I couldn't help but feel an apprehension. Having an AI supported intelligence would be cool and all, but I feel like something must have been lost along the way. It's the same way I felt when I read "Brave New World". I did not enjoy it.

Wait, you think Brave New World isn't about a dystopia? Because it is, you know. The point of the book is that a "perfect" world would actually suck.

Sorry, "dystopia" wasn't in my book of Terms That Easily Sum Up What I Am Trying To Say. I know that's what it was about, was just trying to form a correlation.

The way BNW handles dystopia is, to me, what makes it a better idea of the future than 1984. But both are still depressing.

So all the SWA doctors need to do now is figure out a way to market the Conditioning meds as the latest recreational drug and their budgetary short-fall issues are instantly solved.

Now THERE'S a story hook... either a funny piece or a deadly serious one, depending on which direction you go with it...

Belisario: WhOOOOOoooOOOOooOOoooo! I'm Gleaming the Cube!
Giliani: Why is our conditioning expert acting like he's been licking Amazonian frogs?
Duvalier: He says that he's helping to keep us within budget by removing the need to pay for volunteers in clinical trials.
Belisario: Nyehhhhhhheeeehhheheheheheheheeeehhhh...

Re: So this is kind of depressing...
Depending on how much of the girl's enforced loyalty is managed by the Conditioning medication itself, it definitely has the potential to be converted into some kind of chemical weapon. I've actually toyed with the idea of having Nina use a modified form of the medication as a kind of truth serum in her interrogations. Of course, there are still some kinks that need to be worked out, like that pesky problem of the drugs completely frying the person's brain because it hasn't yet been successfully formulated for adult physiology, but that just means her interrogations two purposes at once: information gathering and valuable research opportunities. So it's a win-win.

Re: So this is kind of depressing...
Speaking seriously, it's something that I touched on briefly in "The Lamb and the Tyger" as Belisario speculates as to how his drugs may be commercialised after the Agency is wrapped up. I agree that its use as an interrogation drug would be interesting - given the compound's bucolic setting, maybe with shades of the freakier extremes of The Prisoner? Seeing its effects might also be an opportunity for the cyborgs to reflect a little darkly on the poison that gives them power.

Re: So this is kind of depressing...
A short glance at that sight made me question everything I've ever known.
No, not really. "Great Earthquake hits California sometime between now and 2037"????
I'd pay money for the place to break off and float away. Regardless, 26 years is a long time to go without a major earthquake, and the last truly devastating one was over a hundred years ago. Even Criswell could make that one seem like prophecy.
