Re: [EDIT]
Unless the enemy has atom bombs, you should be alright - electromagnetic pulses are normally generated by nuclear explosions, and flux compression generators which can recreate the effect without a bomb are big apparatuses. Actual hand-held EMP grenades are, at present at least, the stuff of science fiction.

I saw on the web, in the U.S. you can easily buy the heavy weapons (grenade launchers and machine guns), along with strong rounds
I think it would need to have special provisions on the right to own them.
can you explain to me?

EMP grenades? Where's this mission taking place, the Goa'uld home planet?
Surprised that civilian ownership of selective-fire/automatic firearms is legal in some states, albeit under very special circumstances only. I thought they were totally prohibited.

Those weapons are regulated under the National Firearms Act of 1934 and the Firearm Owners Protection Act of 1986. The former regulates them and the latter has banned sales of such weapons manufactured after the enactment date to civilians.
So effectively, you can own a selective-fire/automatic firearm that was manufactured before 1986 provided your state/county/city jurisdiction allows such weapons to be owned by civilians.

wouldn't a microwave weapon cause similar affects? those do exist, i know that they are supposed to be safe to use on humans without ill effects, but there are reports of people with tattoos becoming ill as result of them being heated and releasing chemicals into the body,so couldn't they cause induction in a cyborgs artificial nerve system ?

Lyndist, they might as well fire an RPG at your car. Far cheaper and more destructive than an EMP grenade. I won't even bother going into how the technology currently doesn't exist. You don't have to worry.

Well, so are adolescent cyborgs, so I'd say if you can make it work for your story, go for it.Robert Frazer wrote: Actual hand-held EMP grenades are, at present at least, the stuff of science fiction.
A lot of the replies to this thread deal with the use of EMP energy as an offensive weapon...but what's more interesting to me is how you would defend against such a thing. For the cyborgs this would obviously be a concern; they're in large part mechanical and unless the engineers foresaw such a threat they could easily be knocked out by an electro-magnetic pulse.
To me at least, weaknesses are far more interesting as a literary device than superpowers...I'd like to see how Section Two would respond to the enemy using an EMP weapon.

Re: [EDIT]
I've read around a little about EMP and I've heard it said in a few places that cars aren't actually all that vulnerable to them, because the body and rubber tyres act like a Faraday cage - pulses might be so intense that it overcomes even that resistance, but a modern car does have a measure of protection. Wikipedia does also have a reasonably detailed article on electromagnetic shielding and while I don't know any particulars, there is a military program of EMP shielding for vehicles.

well if you knew beforehand that someone was going to detonate a high altitude nuke you could try covering your car in tinfoil ,or putting it in shipping container, but make sure there are no holes in the coverage as the pulse could get in and bounce around making it worse

There is a lot that I can not say, but I will say this since its already in the history books; he was one of several military advisers sent to Vietnam to train that nation's troops as its dependence from France was being hammered out. He trained them so they could at least defend themselves from the Chinese if they decided to invade. This was in the late 50s and early 60s.lyndist wrote:slowdown man

1959-1963. We do not participate in the war "officially" in the south. We try to find ways to achieve peace - by going demonstrations (Armed). At that time, no American troops in Vietnam . And in that time, Vietnam and China are allies
So your friend has to Vietnam when? what his job ?
And please give more information about explosive bolts.(how they work?)
As you know, history went the other way.
Now as for the explosive bolts, think chamber, piston, fuel and compression. It is the compression of the fuel in the chamber by the piston that ignites the fuel and makes the explosion.

Looks like you have some confusion
I think the people you called "Viet Cong" - they can be soldiers of the Republic of Vietnam .From 1956 to 1960 -Americans help train and arming them with American weapons . You friend, He might have traveled to Vietnam at that time - In some kind of Black Ops ( He may be a member of the CIA - SAD or SOG ) . Vietcong is the way that Americans talk about the Vietnam Communist
After the victory of Dien Bien Phu ,Chinese regard us as their backyard , but we do not think so .They brought us out to bargain with the U.S when the US president visits China in the 70s , and followed immediately afterwards is the Christmas bombing in 1972 . An unforgivable betrayal and relations between the two countries has deteriorated quickly
And Khmer Rouge are crazy bastard created by China . When we are fighting to destroy the Khmer Rouge , China poses a border war in 1979 to help them

More like yards. Depending on the bow being used, 50 - 100 yards, considering that with an arrow alone can go a few hundred yards. A 4oz arrow drawn on a 200+ pound compound bow can easily go 1/2 a mile.

I'd reduce it to about forty yards on second thought, though. In that we're talking hand-held crossbows, and in that a crossbow can shoot past forty yards, but the bolt loses energy after that range.

I imagine the explosives detonate on impact. As for the payload, I don't know how destructive it would be. Can't be all too big, I'm thinking - the strength of a 20mm shell, perhaps? Elfen?

I'll concur with that. Anything more and you'll have to 'rainbow shoot' the bolt. Not much trouble with practice when using arrows, bolts on the other hand are a bitch and a half to rainbow shoot.

theres a reason why they aren't used by anyone but film makers and the more wacky survivalist types, the ballistics are terrible, the explosive content is either to small to be very effective and at the same time large enough to be dangerous to the user,
on top of which the main reason for using a bow is that it is silent, but thats not the case when you have explosives strapped to your arrow, far better off using an RPG,or grenade launcher, bigger bang, longer range, less likely to take shrapnel from your own round

The warheads on the arrows were about the size of a golf ball, maybe 2 inches across (5cm). Explosives were dial in (what you poured into the warhead), but it was between 1 -3 sticks of dynamite. a 20mm shell is about 50 - 150 sticks of dynamite or 45 pounds of TNT.Nachtsider wrote:1 yard = 0.91 meters.
