A Matter of Privacy. Empty A Matter of Privacy.

Post by ElfenMagix Thu 20 Jan 2011 - 1:19

I only write this as a warning for all who question how private their web identities and online connections can be. A friend of mine alerted me to this company, having most of her personal information: Name, address, phone number, email address, personal photos that she never published, you name it. I put my email address and whoa! Copies of my email. Copies forum posts on here and other forums I go to. You name it, it was there. On top of all that- if I wanted to see the whole thing about me, that I would have to pay them to see it! I demanded that they remove my email information and everything tied to it from their servers.

The site in question is: http://www.spokeo.com

Search for your own email and see what comes up. Copy the url for the information.

At the bottom of the page, click on the 'Privacy' link. you will need to fill out that form, paste the url with the information you want deleted and decypher the catpcha. Answer the email you will receive, and your info should be deleted immediately. (took 5 minutes for mine to get done.)

I will be checking the site often to see if my info has returned.

In addition to that you have to worry about sites like Intellus, Radaris, and others.

There's myLife which is also notoriously hard to get rid of as well.

Hmm.... I didn't come up with much, just some pics. However, from what I've heard about social network sites, if I was member of say facebook, it would be possible for anyone to access everything I posted there.

Stuff like my posts on forums like this one do appear not to be visible, but I couldn't access the complete version without paying them.

Nothing on me (plenty of pics of people who weren't me, tho!) came up, but that's still really scary.

Well crap, I'm afraid to even type in anything on that site for fear of it actually looking up anything about me, whether or not it has already.
