My iTunes has 50,000 songs... I'd die of old age before my "Life Soundtrack" was done.

Re: Your life soundtrack
Well, as I seem to be the only man north of the Brandt Line to have never owned an iPod of any type, I can't really follow this challenge to the letter!
In substitution, here are my Desert Island Discs:
Thin Lizzy - Whiskey in the Jar
[/quote]
I've inherited a lot of my musical tastes from my father, and this entry is in recognition of that. I'm fortunate enough to have been blessed with an active parent who wasn't one to let me stagnate and who gwould get me keen on the right things, and the soundtrack accompanying trips skiing, fishing and golfing would be The Animals, Cream, Led Zeppelin and Bob Dylan. It's (relatively) older music for more traditional pursuits - which just goes to show that it's funny how things turn out, because I'm a right-wing conservative jamming out to groups that in their day were scandalous iconoclasts...! "moulding the latest heresy in the name of tradition" indeed.
Thin Lizzy's version of "Whiskey in the Jar" - along with The Animals' version of "House of the Rising Sun" (not included here because there's only room for eight records on Desert Island Discs) - if the official Frazer Anthem. Whenever it comes round on the rotation, we'll rewind and play it four or five times before going on, singing along all the while.
Bizet - L'Arléssienne Suite No. 2 (Farandole)
This piece has been selected partially for simple enjoyment - the opening chord absolutely captivates me and I could listen to it a hundred times and never get bored - but it also indirectly reflects an abiding love of science fiction. In an episode of the classic cult thriller The Prisoner, No. 6 hounds and harries No. 2 to distraction and insanity in a ruthless campaign of reverse psychology, all the while worrying away and niggling at him with strains of L'Arlésienne. Sci-fi is often ruthlessly disparaged and scorned by cultural commentators to a ridiculous extent, as if you could contract "dreaded skiffy" like the pneumonic plague (look up the "How Others See Us" column in Dave Langford's Ansible newsletter for the most ludicrous examples, as Literature contorts itself into ever more agonising knots to avoid contamination), but this is a hint to show that it is intelligent, and it is worthwhile.
Supercell - Kimi no Shira nai Monogatari
Most of you will probably recognise this as the ED theme for Bakemonogatari, and it's for that very reason why it's here - this entry is a shout-out to all the anime and manga that have been a source of entertainment and inspiration for me for several years now.
We all know it's there really for the sake of cost-cutting more than artistic expression - you're saving yourself three minutes of costs by repeating the same animation in every episode - but I wouldn't have it any ofther way: one of the conventions of anime that I've always loved is the OP/ED sequences. Whereas most western shows are paring down their opening to almost nothing, the OP/ED set the scene, establish mood and develop character, as well as injecting a show with a bit of colour in the form of music, which can relieve even the most po-faced drama slumping into the doldrums. It's a key source of appeal that's lit me up for a long time.
This song, a maudlin reminiscence of missed opportunity but set to a score which evokes fondness and enthusiasm and a spirited future - sad but satisfied, like a wan smile - probably also describes the strange ambivalence of state of transition that I seem to be turning through now as I finally leave behind youth.
Darwinia - Visitors From Dreams
This track is here for a similar reason to L'Arlésienne above - whereas that was to defend the virtue of science ficion, this is to trade another blow in the torrid battle against wider wilfulness to prove that videogames are art. Darwinia is a novel entry in the gaming canon - coded by "bedroom programmers", cottage-industry enthusiasts, with a distinctive aesthetic style and an intriguing philosophy behind it, depicting the travails of the little computer people as their search for God - i.e. their programmer - ends up with them bringing calamity down on themselves as they communicate with his E-Mail server and the wrath and hellfire of worms and trojans! Darwinia's theme, a classic of "chipset" music, is a demonstration of how those bleeps and buzzes of gaming, often so nonchalantly dismissed, can come together to craft something beautiful.
Moving off on a tangent, but the issue of games-as-art remind me of a funny story - the Playstation 3 launch title Resistance: Fall of Man kicked up a minor scandal in my home city of Manchester when the Dean of Manchester Cathedral took exception to the depiction of the cathedral in the game, not wanting it to be associated with violent videogames. I managed to get a small piece in the paper defending it, but I want to focus on something other than that. Resistance sold about a million copies - however, in the very same week that the Dean was complaining most vociferously about the cultural sinkhole of videogames corrupting the nation's youth etc. etc. etc. (much in the same way that rock music was supposed to turn us into Satanists and television was once "the idiot's lantern"), the BBC broadcast the last episode of wildly popular drama Life on Mars.
The show is set in Manchester; the episode in question involves the main character abdicating his responsibilities and literally commiting suicide precisely so he can leave off reality and go and live in his fantasy world. The final scene involves the cast roaring off to fight in a gun-battle, while the much-loved Gene Hunt (foul-mouthed, belligerent, homophobic, misogynistic, and everything to make the modern liberal shrivel in horror) boasts "I am the law". This show was seen by seven million people in the UK alone and critically praised - but why was no-one complaining about the questionable ethics and doubtful role-models that it was presenting, hmm?
Fauré - Requiem: Movement No. 6 (Libera Me)
I've always been religious, which is part of the reason why I am representing a piece of sacred music here, but really the purpose of this piece is to reflect on something more personal rather than to sermonise. I was keen on classical music from a young age, but it was from the relatively superficial "epic orchestral" perspective - unless it was crashing and bashing and roaring and soaring and creating a general din, the sort of thing that might be the battle theme in a movie, then it was difficult to motivate myself. I first sang Fauré's Requiem in the school choir, and it was a scales-falling-from-the-eyes revelation.
I hadn't been singing "epic orchestra" in the choir itself, of course, but I still had that same attitude - it was the Christmas carol concert which was my highlight of the singing year, but even so I loved banging out "Adeste Fideles" as loudly as possible, correct key be damned. This Requiem was the first piece, though, which struck me and spoke to me as much as I was speaking to the audience.
Requiems are intended to accompany a Mass and so they tend to have set structures with particular pieces to reflect different parts of a set liturgy. Fauré's version however, has no "Dies Irae" (arguably the most famous version of which, in Verdi's Requiem, is definitely one of those "epic orchestra" moments), but instead mutes and mellows the "day of anger, day of terror" by submerging it within the "Libera Me" - quiet, soulful, sonorous, melancholic and wrenching, but nonetheless captivating with how it sweeps you away with a heartaching unison chorus genuinely moved me, and carried me off to a new shore.
Pirates of Penzance - When the Foeman Bares His Steel
I'd been in the choir since pretty much day one during my time at Manchester Grammar, and carried through with it right the way through to sixth form, but when I finally left I fell out of the habit for a while - treading the boards with musical theatre is what brought me back in-tune. A good song'n'dance number is a source of rapture and delight wherever it appears, and the Savoy Operas of Gilbert & Sullivan are timeless classics of pure enjoyment (and oddly edgy in places, too - such as in Iolanthe when five-and-twenty peers "come to shoot over her grass, and not for the sparrows" - that went completely over my poor innocent head and someone had to explain it to me) which will hopefully be with us for all time. They've kept me up and at'em and out and about in the last few years when a raft of personal problems made me fear that I would be shutting down.
A small confession though... although I'm placing it here to represent my operatic endeavours, I've never actually performed in Pirates of Penzance! It is, however, one of the most memorable of Gilbert & Sullivan's turns (with a particularly striking rendition in the gymnastic gyrations of Tony Azito in the 1983 film, the sound of which is used here), and as I've not yet had a title role I've not got the ego to hog the limelight yet...!
Noah and the Whale - Five Years' Time
This is one song that doesn't particularly indicate any great stage in my life's development, but it's part of the fabric of the backdrop that I've lain against. It's really just something I have to acknowledge as a superb song on its own merits: "And in five years' time, you might just prove me wrong" is one of the most delightful lines in all of pop music. You could almost float away on its sense of light whimsy.
Elgar - Pomp & Circumstance March No. 4
It's not the most fashionable thing to admit to nowadays, but I like to call myself a patriot. Normally this would be accompanied to refrains of Rule, Britannia! or Land of Hope and Glory... along with cynical condescending smirks from the sidelines. But Land of Hope and Glory is set to to Pomp and Circumstance March. No. 1, and by quite consciously choosing a different entry in the series I hope to get across that there's different nuances and more to a love of country than war-war. Throughout a lot of my life I've been a soggy suburbanite straddling both the urban and rural camps, but I've never liked big cities, which can be beguiling and mesmerising, but invariably turn out to be an oppressive hassle. The countryside is a unique treasure, and I feel suffused and at ease there. Maybe I couldn't live there - I've been bitten by urbanity, and the desire for consistent broadband and easy access to the supermarket would always be niggling away at me - but a trip is a conscious relief. Going back to my fishing with my dad, the rest of the world could fall into the sea - give me the Wye Valley, though, and I would be content.
In substitution, here are my Desert Island Discs:
Thin Lizzy - Whiskey in the Jar

Good Riddance (Time of Your Life) - Green Day. Times heard in Five_X's life: ERROR: UNCOUNTABLE
Easily the most overrated, overplayed song in the history of ever. Especially considering that I hear it everywhere when something remotely calling for a song of its style happens. It really gets quite irritating. I kinda wish I knew why people liked it/played it so much, though. A conundrum!
Bleh, had to do just a bit of a rant there. The song just really bugs me in a way few things do. Just one of those songs...
