Fanfiction.net

I've noticed lately that the number of fics for some of the series in the Anime/Manga section of fanfiction.net seems to be a little odd. For instance, I was under the impressions that the anime based off Key's "big three" visual novels (Kanon, Air, Clannad) were relatively popular, but Kanon has only 8 fics, Air 25, and Clannad 103. Also, Mai HiME has 2542 fics, while The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya has only 949. Also, Elfen Lied, only 445, Ghost in the Shell, only 245!

Does anyone have any idea what's going on here?

Just because an anime is popular to watch, does not necessarily mean it is popular to write for.

I mean at its core, Gunslinger Girl is a pretty depressing story. Little girls from traumatic backgrounds turned into cold-blooded murder machines.

And as for Mai HiME, I expect those are mostly from Piero.

There used to be thousand's but close to a year ago, FF.net cleaned house and deleted inactive accounts and 'dead' stories.

The resulting backlash can be felt in the general forum.

I had always thoought the number of stories for the different series matched up well will how popular and how old the series was. I do remember them cleaning house some time ago though. Also could some fandoms be posting their stories elsewhere like Live Journal or more specific sites.
