Greetings from Ohio
Hiya, folks. Just checking in to say heloo and to say that I hope to contribute beneficiall to this site.
As my topic line says, I'm from Ohio, I'm 28, work (rather sadly) in retail, and like to read manga, shoot guns, and generally be me.
I currently own six rifles, five handguns, and load for every caliber I own minus the 22long.
I am also working on a GS Girl fan-fict that takes place around the time of books seven, eight, and nine, though don't expect anything from it until I'm finished with it. Currently I'm at 76 pages, first draft, but I'm only a quarter way through, if that, so it'll be more of a novel than anything.
I can say that I initially found Gunslinger Girl a little hard to follow, but maybe it's the way ADV did the translation, or the way Yu Aida framed the pages. Since book two, however, I've been hooked, even going so far as to buy 7-10, despite the fact I can't read japanese. My efforts at translating have been mixed, but kudos to those people online that do it and post.
If I had to request one thing of Yu Aida, it would be to give us (the readers) more back-story of the secondary characters. Ferro in particular seems to have a deep past that we have yet to see a glimpse of, only the person the events created. As a creative person, I find such characters compelling and a necessary part of creating the world of a complex story.
Anyway, I just wanted to chime in and be heard. I'm sure I'll speak up in threads here and there.

Thanks. I prefer to keep borrowed characters true to form since they're not mine, but with Ferro I allowed myself a little moment of freedom to give her a personable trait that she can pull out when needed. Lets face it, she's cold, hard, and efficient; the human equivalent of a FrigidAir. I allowed her a moment to break from that in the interests of getting the job done, a key to her character.
Somewhere I came across a reference for Italian names and "Ferro" was Italian or Latin for "Rock", a fitting name for the character, likely by design as the Japanese are prone to do. She's a cornerstone of the agency with her skills, and her personality reflects that. But it's foolish to assume she has no other emotions or ability to display them.
I wrote in a bit where she shows an emotional side that surprises my character, and I end it with a bit of a twist.
This is the ONLY bit of my fict I'm releasing until completion, so DONT ASK.
"I thought I was going to die of dehydration before she finished." Ferro wiped her eyes a final time and put her sunglasses on, getting back into her usual mood. Michael glanced at her in annoyance, suddenly realizing how much he’d been had alongside that poor woman.
"Crocodile tears, Ferro? And here I thought something had actually been able to crack that tough demeanor."
"College drama class. It was a sad story for sure, but I’ve seen a hundred more tragic and there was no bright light lifting up those peoples’ lives. The world is a dangerous place filled with things that will tear us down, and most of us will not be able to get back up. All we can do is press on as hard and fast as we can until the end."
"God, I’m bringing Priscilla next time."
"Good. Flying twenty-three hours round-trip for a one-hour meeting is a waste of my time anyway."
As to who my favorite girl is... :: I don't really think I have a favorite. They're all compelling in one way or another, that's what keeps my attention in the series.

22lr is nice in large part because the ammo is so cheap. Plinking away with a 22LR is a fun and cheap way to spend an afternoon.
