Enya? Maybe, with a capital M. The rest are too mainstream, and even Enya might be pushing it. I'd go for Theatre of Tragedy and Within Temptation.

I'm with Whatface and TTIO on this one. As much of a rock'n'roll fan as I am, the style just doesn't fit GSG. Dramatic music with classical instruments always fits 'em best. Maybe a few modern techniques thrown in, but certainly no distorted guitar, DJ scratching or complex lyrics.
So yeah, Bond, Apocalyptica, the London Philharmonic... and whatever other modern bands who use exclusively traditional symphonic/orchestral instruments you can dig up... but certainly nothing even similar to mainstream metal/punk/rock/hip hop/pop et cetera.

Agreed. The music needs to compliment the bitter/sweet, melancholy feel of the story. No matter how well the lyrics fit, metal/punk/rock/hip hop just don’t work.LoC978 wrote:I'm with Whatface and TTIO on this one. As much of a rock'n'roll fan as I am, the style just doesn't fit GSG. Re: How many band you want them to make music in GSG?
I definitely think that there's a place for Van the Man somewhere in a future GSG production.
Curiously there doesn't seem to be a YouTube video of the song available - only later cover versions of it - but Van Morrison's "Bright Side of the Road" has always struck me as particularly apposite for the girls considering their position. Some of you may think that it's too upbeat, but while there are troubles in the world and each grain of their time on it is counted out, why can't they enjoy a little happiness and magnify it with friends and company while they may?
It's a song that I can picture coming across the radio during a driving sequence - Henrietta is suprised by it at first, but gradually her head starts to bob along to the beat while Jose, with perhaps a self-effacing guffaw, smiles indulgently from the driver's seat.

wow... is that like... a compilation of songs all melded into one? I was struck with a whole lot of nostalgic feelings listening to it, but I couldn't pin down any one melody I heard... it was all so vaguely familiar...Totoum wrote:LoC978 wrote:Dramatic music with classical instruments always fits 'em best.

That's from the japanese movie "hana-bi" (great movie) , different part of the songs are heard throughout the movie.
and ,omg how could I forget "the do" who sometimes do unorthodox things but i think some of their song are a nice fit for GG

It doesn't matter. A good song is a good song. It doesn't have to be slow or orchestrated to make it Gunslinger Girl-esque. Linkin Park is a good example of this.
Examples:
In The End
Descriptions of the Gunslinger Girl's lives? I would say so.

that's just the thing, though... music in a motion picture is supposed to reflect the feel of it, not tell the story. That's what dialogue is for.

mainstream music is not good soundtrack music (outside exceptional circumstances, such as a club/party scene).
now, if Petra was raiding a strip club, I could see some of this stuff playing.

I wonder what it'll be like if Hans Zimmer composed for GSG.

It's not movies but there's TV shows that use mainstream music quite a bit for their soundtrack.
And even in movies...first exemple that comes to mind is slumdog millionaire that used a couple of songs by MIA or Children of men that had a few too.
And in anime, take noir, "canta per me" gets played over and over again , even GG used "woke from dreaming" to introduce an episode.
Oh et puis merde, why not have a GG musical!!??? (like that i can see hilshire sing "here comes the sun" to triela)
Forgive me,it's 5:45AM , i need sleep...yeah,i guess i'm gonna go get some.
edit:just also remembered watchmen uses a few 60s-70s classics in it's soundtrack.

I believe The Light Before We Land and Woke From Dreaming were both composed specifically for Gunslinger Girl. And besides, you can hardly call The Delgados 'mainstream'
The thing is, whilst some songs could be considered deep if you really look into the lyrics, it has to really sound sad too. I mean, who's going to analyse lyrics whilst watching an anime?

plus, to Gunslinger Girl's intended audience, The Light Before We Land and Woke From Dreaming are just haunting songs in a foreign language... same with Noir's Canta per me

Don't think they composed it for gunslinger girl but yeah i guess i kind of got "mainstream" and "non instrumental" mixed up a bit.
Though am I the only person that doesn't find "the light before we land" sad?Bittersweet yeah, but there's an upward progression during the chorus that kind of cheers me up.

I don't really find it all that sad... well, conceptually, I guess. It leaves me with a similar feeling to Pink Floyd's Comfortably Numb.Totoum wrote:Though am I the only person that doesn't find "the light before we land" sad?Bittersweet yeah, but there's an upward progression during the chorus that kind of cheers me up.
