Winter 2014 Anime Empty Winter 2014 Anime

Post by Piero Sat 7 Dec 2013 - 21:15

Previews for the Winter 2014 Anime season are now available.

http://www.crunchyroll.com/anime-news/2013/11/28/updated-winter-2014-anime-chart

Shoji Kawamori of Macross fame is working on a new series called Nobunaga: The Fool which seems to be some sort of medieval sci fi mecha series featuring characters based on Oda Nobunaga, Jean D'Arc, and Leonardo Da Vinci.  (For those of you not familiar with a broad selection of Kawamori's works, the various Macross series tend more towards the sane side of his spectrum.)

The director of Cowboy Bebop is also working on a new project called Space Dandy.

One series I'm particularly lookin forward to is Toaru Hakuushi e no Koiuta (Love Song for a Certain Pilot).  It's set in the same world as Remembrances of a Certain Pilot, the novel which Madhouse adapted into the 2011 animated movie The Princess and the Pilot.

I see a fair bit of stuff that looks interesting, as well as new seasons for a number of past favorites. Good

I can see around a dozen shows I'll at least start (especially if CrunchyRoll carries them).

Gah!   No "Waratte! Sotomura-san" ??! They've been working on it since spring!  I'm jazzed about the second season of "Gin no Saji", and definitely about "Tonari no Seki-kun". Both manga's are great.

Space Dandy

Space Dandy is paid to search for new, undiscovered alien species in an industry where the prize goes to the person who finds aliens the fastest. Dandy searches unknown planets for strange beings with his companions, QT the worn-out robot and Meow from Betelgeuse. Meanwhile, they're being chased by minions of the Gorgol Empire, for reasons that are still a mystery.

Looks...interesting. It's already been confirmed to be airing on Cartoon Network's Toonami block, so that should help it in the US.

Funimation (the US licensor) has done a dub of the show because it is being broadcast on US television before it is aired in Japan.

As fr the term "breastaurant", they translated it directly (I watched it subbed via official stream) and have to say that is how I plan to refer to Hooters from now on. Smile

Winter 2014 Anime Empty Re: Winter 2014 Anime

Post by Kiskaloo Tue 7 Jan 2014 - 18:22

Spending a couple of days on a plane has allowed me to watch a fair bit of this season’s opening episodes…

The Pilot's Love Song [Toaru Hikushi e no Koiuta] - Episode 01
This is a tale of a prince who lost everything leaves for a journey with no guarantee of returning to his hometown safely. With hatred and revenge in his mind, he met several people that taught him about friendship...and love.

The show I was most looking forward to this season, the first episode pretty much just set the basic plot, introduce the two main characters / love interests and some of the supporting cast.

Norgamai - Episode 01
[Yato is a minor deity who lacks even a single shrine. In order to build his own shrine, he scrawls his cell number on the wall of a downtown bathroom telling people he will help them in exchange for a 5-yen offering, becoming a self-styled "delivery god." Hiyori, the daughter of a respectable family, is almost in a traffic accident, but is rescued by Yato. This causes her to become a "hanyou," a person who can easily lose her soul. She chases Yato down, and they begin to work together. Yato also finds a boy named Yukine who becomes a "sacred treasure" that can be used by a god. The three of them battle "you" who bring harm to humans as Yato's hidden history is gradually revealed.

It's effectively "comedic horror", but I found it entertaining enough.

Witch Craft Works – Episode 01
Honoka knows his classmate Ayaka is talented in both the pen and the sword, attractive in face and figure, and that everyone at school calls her the Princess. When he gets himself involved in the "Witch of the Tower" incident one day after school, however, he learns she is also a witch sent to protect him. From then on, his ordinary school life is completely turned upside down, as he discovers that most of his classmates are not what they seem.

A nicely animated standard otaku fantasy show – literally, in this case, since it has witches - that will be watchable far more on the cuteness of the girls and not the strength of the story. Might end up being a harem show considering how many female leads there are.

Nobunaga: The Fool - Episode 01
The planets of the East and the West were once connected by the Ama-no-Hashidate. The culture that built it was destroyed countless years ago, and the two planets have had separate histories ever since. On the Western planet, ancient culture is experiencing a renaissance after a long period of war. Jeanne Kaguya D'Arc, a girl from the Western Planet, was prophesied to be the Savior of the World at her birth. With Leonard Da Vinci, she lands on the Eastern Planet, where Nobunaga "the Fool" longs for the power to change the world, as his planet is still locked in a war where many heroes vie for supremacy. When these two people meet, the culture of both worlds will be transformed.

Mecha fans will weep tears of joy while students of history will just weep. sweat

I hope we don’t get another Galilei Donna where very nice visuals are paired with a poor story idea and execution.

Nobunagun - Episode 01
Shio Ogura is a Japanese high school student, who is visiting Taiwan on a school trip when she is suddenly attacked by monsters. Agents known as "E-Gene Holders" from the government agency DOGOO also arrive, who wield weapons infused with the spirits of historical figures. Shio is revealed to also be an E-Gene Holder when the soul of Oda Nobunaga awakens after she tries to rescue a friend.

When it comes to anime, Oda Nobunaga seems to be as popular as wincest with one’s sister… Anyway, I kind of liked this one more than Nobunaga: The Fool. While the animation (and the ambition of the story) fall far behind, I liked what I saw of Shio Ogura and the plot seems to be more straight-forward (if not as ambitious).

Robot Girls Z – Episodes 01-03

Robot Girls Z focuses on three high school girls: Z-chan (based on Mazinger Z), Gre-chan (based on Great Mazinger), and Grenda-san (based on Grendizer). The group forms the Robot Girls Z unit in Nerima Ward Oizumi Academy's Photon Power District in Photon Power Town that promotes Photonic Energy as the future energy source and fight the evil Baron Ashura and her Mechanical Beasts Girls Garada-chan and Doublas-chan who seek to use Photonic Energy for their nefarious purposes.

Not sure how to feel about this one. On the one hand, it seems an affront against some classic Toei giant mechs shows. On the other, it was pretty funny and the Robot Girls are pretty cute.  sweat

Pupipo - Episodes 01, 02 and 03
Fifth grader Wakaba can see things invisible beings other people can't. Because of this, she's bullied by her classmates and spends her days alone. But one day, she meets a strange pink creature who only says "Pupipo." It quickly becomes fond of Wakaba and protects her from evil beings. With its help, she befriends Reiko, a girl obsessed with the occult. Meanwhile, she meets Naoya, a boy who can also see invisible creatures, and decides to help him get rid of them.

Emily the Strange: The Anime Smile

Seriously, doesn't jump out at me at the moment, but as it's a three-minute show, I can spare the time.

Tonari no Seki-kun - Episode 01
In the middle of class at a certain school, Rumi Yokoi, a diligent student, has her in-class life turned upside-down when her next-door desk mate "Seki" (full name Toshinari Seki) begins to play by himself at his desk in class. Although Yokoi is irked by Seki's distracting yet intricate playtime, she finds herself being drawn into his interesting hobby. Never being able to focus, Yokoi observes Seki's stunning ways of slacking off in class.

I expect Yokoi will have an aneurism by episode five. I also expect interest will depend on how interesting Seki’s time-wasting diversions are.

Buddy Complex – Episode 01
On the first day back after summer break, high-school student Aoba is attacked by a giant robot that appears out of the sky. As he's pursued through the city, his classmate Hina appears in a robot of her own. She rescues him, and tells him cryptically that "Dio is waiting for you," before she disappears. This begins Aoba's new life as the pilot of the Free Treaty Alliance against the Great Zogiria Republic.

It’s a mecha show from Sunrise, so you immediately think Gundam and while it looks like this show will follow that formula – two governments in conflict, etc. – there is also time travel involved as well as a bit of Starship Girl Yamamoto Yohko

Wooser's Hand-to-Mouth Life: Awakening Arc
Wooser is a yellow creature who at first glance looks sweet but actually hides a wicked heart. He's awakened one year after a tragedy that claimed many victims. Confused from the timeslip, he sees a general who looks just like him. Wooser resolves to assassinate and replace the general, and remake history to his own liking.

I watched the first series mostly for Ren and Rin and with this first episode, they went with “traditional” animation rather than the pseudo-8-bit format they normally use, so both girls looked good. Wooser is a bit more of a creeper in this show than I remember him being in the original.

Considering how many cameos Wooser had in Miss Monochrome, I was not surprised she made her own cameos in this show.

Seitokai Yakunindomo (Season 2) - Episode 01

The first show was pretty much non-stop visual and spoken sexual innuendo, yet somehow it ends up being amusing enough to stay with. Japan evidently felt the same as the show’s been given a second season and GoHands appears to have been given a stronger budget as the animation looks better than Season 1.

D-Fragments – Episode 01
Kazama Kenji likes to believe he is something of a delinquent. Moreover, others seem to like to agree that he is. Of course, Kenji's gang finds their way to a group of four not-so-normal girls—Chitose, Sakura, Minami and Roka—and all at once, whatever reputation he may have is nothing compared to the outrageous behavior of the girls.

Effectively another “guy joins club of girls – hilarity ensures” anime, but I tend to like those types of anime (at least when they involve student councils – see above and Seitokai Ichizon) and the girl's personalities are humorously dark. The second half was a fair bit weaker than the first, however.

SoniAni - Super Sonico the Animation - Episode 01
Super Sonico is an 18-year old college student who plays guitar for the three-girl band Fastest Speed in Space and models for pin-ups. In spite of her busy schedule, she still finds time to her grandmother at her restaurant. One night, her band members Suzu and Fuuri, are late to a concert, forcing her to play alone. The result of that show will have far-reaching consequences for Sonico.

Super Sonico is the mascot character for game studio Nitroplus and as such, she currently has the best odds to win hottest anime character of 2014. Let's just say she'd be perfect for Space Dandy. Wink

However, while she's hot, the show's not really giving out the fan service in the first episode (beyond a gravure photo shoot with a creeper client) and based on the attitude Super Sonico's producer has, probably won't be giving out the fan service. And while I have often criticized shows that are “otaku bait”, to be honest, the only reason I can see to watch this show would be for fan service because Super Sonic pretty much has nothing to offer but a hot body.

Recently, My Sister is Unusual- Episode 01
A girl named Mitsuki Kanzaki lives with her step-brother Yuya after her mother remarries. One day, Mitsuki is possessed by the self-proclaimed spirit of a young girl, Hiyori Kotobuki. Hiyori (in Mitsuki's body) must fall in love with Yuya to move toward the "Gates of Heaven."

Soft-core porn with the porn censored. Makes even less sense to broadcast than SoniAni.

It is so god-awful that it could be the show that finally kills "sis-con" once and for all.

Engaged to the Unidentified [Mikakunin de Shinkokei] - Episode 01

Yonomi Kobeni, an ordinary girl, finds out on her 16th birthday that she is betrothed to Mitsumine Hakuya, a boy the same age as her. Hakuya moves in from the countryside and starts living with her, bringing his younger sister who is still a primary school student with him.

Not a bad start, overall. If it focuses on the two main characters - and not their siblings - then it could be a winner.

Strange+ - Episode 01

Kou is searching for his older brother Takumi, who left home and has gone missing in the city. Worried that he's in trouble, Kou decides not to go home until he's found him, only to find him all too easily. Takumi, it turns out, has become head of the Mikuni Detective Agency, and has no intention of going back home. Kou decides that if he can't make Takumi return, then he'll join the agency himself.

A slapstick gag anime based on a slapstick gag manga (which explains the Cat’s Eye symbol on the heist letter in the PV). It was funny, if a bit crude in it’s humor. That the episodes are only a few minutes in length is a plus - something SoniAni could definitely have benefitted from.

Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions! REN - Episode 01

Loved the original. Love the sequel.

Pupa - Episode 01

Growing up with an abusive father, Utsutsu is highly protective of his younger sister Yume. One day, Yume sees a red butterfly and contracts the strange Pupa virus. She begins to sprout grotesque wings and to indiscriminately attack both animals and humans. Hoping to find a way to stop the advance of the virus, Utsutsu seeks out Maria, a researcher who knows the secret of Pupa. He decides to sacrifice his own body as live bait for the sake of saving Yume.

Not sure how well horror is going to work when delivered in four minute installments…

Sakura Trick - Episode 01

Haruka Takayama and Yuu Sonoda were inseparable during their junior high school years, but upon entering their senior high school, they end up being seated on opposite sides of the classroom. Having to spend time with more friends, the two decide to do something to make their relationship special.

I really enjoy well-done yuri shows. Sasameki Koto and Aoi Hana are two of my all-time favorite anime shows.

While I don’t think I’m going to get that with Sakura Trick, I don’t think I’m going to get a train wreck, either.

Onee-chan ga Kita - Episode 01
13-year old Tomoya's father remarries, and his new stepsister is 17-year old Ichika. She decides she's completely in love with him, to a ridiculous and somewhat scary degree.

Yeah, this show’s not going to get creepy.

Silver Spoon (Season 2) - Episode 01

One of my favorite shows of 2013 looks like it's going to be one of my favorite shows of 2014.  cheers

Sword Art Online has an 'Extra Edition' which is just Kirito summarizing what happened to him interspliced with scenes of his sister learning to swim in prep for a raid on an underwater ALO dungeon.  The part about the ALO dungeon raid starts 1:20 into it.  All the stuff beforehand can be skipped safely.

Master of Wasting Time is well worth the short amount of time.  I mean, it's likely going to be the same joke each episode, but the first one is executed well.

Pupa looks to be possibly good, if I can keep from hurling.

Z/X Ignition looks forgettable.

So does Nobungagun - it's barely watchable.  If you say it's better than Nobunga, the Fool, then I'm going to drop it w/o watching.

Wake Up, Girls has an infectious opening, and it looks to have some good characterization. It's about 7 girls who want to be an idol band.  Not my usual heart-stabbing-goodness, I know.  Still, the preview has a cut of a girl crying, and we know the road to idol-singing-hood is strewn with shattered hopes, so there may still be a good heart-stabbing or two in there.

Wake Up, Girls! - Episode 01
Green Leaves Entertainment is a tiny production company on the verge of going out of business in Sendai, the biggest city in Japan's northeastern Tohoku region. The agency once managed the careers of magicians, photo idols, fortune-tellers, and other entertainers, but its last remaining client finally quit. In danger of having zero talent (literally), the president Tange hatches an idea of producing an idol group. On the brash president's orders, the dissatisfied manager Matsuda heads out to scout raw talent. Matsuda makes a fateful encounter with a certain girl...

This TV series is the sequel to the movie Wake Up, Girls! Shichi-nin no Idol, which hit the theaters the same day as the TV show aired and provides much of the back story for the show. As such, it is something you should probably either seek out or read a synopsis of before you start this show.

On the surface, it's effectively The iDOLM@STER (with lower production values), however below the surface it has eliminated a fair bit of the fluff, which results in a stronger show. I'm a fan of the director, Yutaka Yamamoto, who helmed Kannagi and Fractale and he looks to be on form here with good writing and pacing. The dancing is also animated traditionally, as opposed to using MMD, and the only fan service is the mandatory panty shots as the girls twirl or jump in their skirts.

This is the first show of the new season I actively want to see the next episode of. Good

No-Rin - Episode 01
When the national idol Kusakabe Yuka suddenly retired from the entertainment business, it shocked the world and it devastated teenager Hata Kosaku. Kosaku was Yuka's biggest fan and her departure left him depressed. His classmates at the Tamo Agriculture School finally are able to get him to leave his room and attend his class, but to everyone's amazement, Kusakabe Yuka (her stage name) comes into the class under the name Kinoshita Ringo as a transfer student. Kosaku realizes he has the once in a lifetime opportunity to get to personally know his dream girl and, together with his group of friends, try to find out why she is here and become closer than just classmates.

They should have called this show "Just-No". While it shares a setting with Silver Spoon, it shares nothing of what makes the latter show so awesome.

Post by Piero Sat 11 Jan 2014 - 15:36

Bit late to the party, but here's some impressions of the new show's I've watched over the last week or so.

Space Dandy -I had some expectations for this one since its from the same director as Cowboy Bebop.  I ended up being disappointed.  The show doesn't have much of a plot thus far -its basically a boobs obsessed comedy and I didn't find it all that funny.

The Pilot's Love Song -This one is hard to judge objectively because the novels its based on are a spin off of the novel The Princess and the Pilot was based off of (same world, different place and characters), and The Princess and the Pilot is pretty much my all time favorite animated movie.  So was my relatively negative impression of the first episode the first time I watched it because I was comparing it to its predecessor too much?  Or did I have a more positive impression of the episode the second time around because I really want this show to be good?

Nobunaga: The Fool -This show is kind of crazy, but also plenty of fun.  Its probably my favorite show of the season thus far.  Though hopefully it won't go too far off the rails.

Buddy Complex -An okay start.  Unlike some people, I actually like the male lead.  He actually seems like a nice, friendly, well adjusted guy.  What's the problem with that?

Witchcraft Works -Not all that impressed, though I didn't think it was as awful as my brother indicated it was.

Sakura Trick -Well, it's definitely a yuri series.  Also, someone working on this show has a thighs fetish.  sweat

Agreed. The only confirmed winners for me so far are sequels from earlier shows (Silver Spoon / Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions! REN) or continuations from the previous season (Nagi no Asukara / Kill la Kill).

Nobunaga: The Fool and The Pilot's Love Song were the shows I was most interested in before the season started, and they're still the new shows I'm most interested in right now.  I liked the first episode of the former and the latter at least has potential, though I found the fact that the cast concentrated on a gaggle of high schoolers didn't sit well with me.  Made it seem more like a typical anime than The Princess and the Pilot, where the story focused on only two characters neither of whom had ever set foot in anything resembling a typical anime high school.

BTW, I watched No-Rin!, Nobunagun, D-Frag, that World Conquest series and the Wake Up Girls! movie with my anime buddies today (in addition to repeats of a couple things I'd already seen).  While they were somewhat entertaining I'm not particularly enthusiastic about any of them. I'd give Wake Up Girls higher points than the others, but its yet another idol anime.

Winter 2014 Anime Empty Re: Winter 2014 Anime

Post by taerKitty Sun 12 Jan 2014 - 12:39

Wake Up Girls! the movie was watchable, but I was disappointed to see that 90% of the WUG (series) OP was snipped from the film.  (Only the 'group photo' of the girls overlooking the city at the end of the OP wasn't something I instantly recognized from the movie.)

Watching the movie isn't required, actually.  None of the characters made any revelations that look significant for the series.  The series starts with the key details and goes on from there.
Spoiler:

Strange+ is a waste of time, at least for me.

===

[Update 2014-01-13]

The Pilot and the Princess movie is fantastic.  The Pilot's Love Song series shares the same world, and one similar character design, though it appears the actual characters are different.  In the movie, the girl with the long silver hair is Princess Fana, while in the series, a similar-looking character is (evidently) named Provincial Governor Nina Viento.  The map is similar (based on what little was shown in both the movie and the series thus far) with a huge freaking waterfall running the span of an ocean(!) separating one island from the other two, but the countries are named differently.

Animation quality isn't as high, but that's not unexpected given that we're comparing a one-shot movie against an episodic series.

One thing I found odd was a possible discontinuity in tech level.  In the movie, the more advanced plane had counter-rotating 'push' propellors.  Here, the trainers have Osprey-like VTOL via pivoting wings.  Now, given that these planes are powered by (evidently) hydrogen fuel cells, who am I to quibble, but...

Aside from The Great Waterfall as a geographic location, the only thing this series shares with the movie is a heavy-handed dose of class oppression.  In truth, that made The Pilot and the Princess shine, so it being so strong here is a boon.  However, there seems very little to tie this to the movie otherwise.

In short, I would recommend you watch the movie because it's fantastic, but it's really not needed (so far) to enjoy the series.  I watched the first episode before watching the film, then rewatched it.  All I got on my subsequent viewing were questions about "Wait, wasn't that named this in the film?  Why are they calling it that instead?"

===

Nobunga the Fool I find much more watchable than Nobungagun.  It's not animated in an exaggerated style like -gun, for instance.  I don't instantly dislike OTT-animation styles as a rule; I really enjoyed FL;CL, though I can't really explain what it was about.  However, animating something in an exaggerated style is a bit of a double-down risk in my eyes.  It had better be really good, and -gun wasn't.  -the Fool, on the other hand, doesn't try to do that in-your-face dissonance.  Aside from the CG, which seems to be de rigeur these days when it comes to mecha, space, and otherworldly backgrounds, it's more-or-less traditional animation.

I found that the key to my enjoying -the Fool was to keep repeating, "We're not in Kansas anymore."  We're not even on Earth, and the names they're dropping (Arthur, Da Vinci, Magellan, to name a few) are not intended to be more than nods to their real-world counterparts.  Maybe it's a case of "you died on Earth and are reincarnated in this alternate world" sort of thing.  Dunno.  As someone who normally doesn't take history lightly, I found I had to sever any ties between supporting character names and their namesakes in my timeline.

Once that was done, it's not a bad show, judging only from the first episode.  In many ways, it's similar to UC 0079 Gundam: you have a young punk in an experimental giant robot.  Come to think of it, that's also the summary for Zeta and Double-Zeta Gundam, too. Smile  This has a much more steampunk feel to it, and there's a lot of foreshadowing of East-meets-West cultural mesh/mash/mess.

===

Here are some one-liners:

Tonari no Seki-kun (a.k.a. Master of Wasting Time) was much more enjoyable in episode two.  At 4 minutes an episode, it's a keeper.

I don't know if I said before, but Z/X Ignition is no longer on my queue - it is just too hamhanded.

Pupa is also off.  I don't need to have my gag reflex challenged that much.

I'm off to give Wizard Barristers a second try.  The main character, OP, and animation style didn't grab me at first.

Hamatora, Magical Warfare, and  Witch Craft Works are still in the to-be-decided section of my queue.

Nisekoi - Episode 01
As a child, Raku Ichijo made a secret promise with his childhood sweetheart, keeping a pendant as a memento while his love took the key. He dreams of one day meeting his past love, but years later, reality smashes his hopes when Chitoge Kirisaki accidentally knees him in the face. Though Raku's a normal high schooler, his family heads the notorious yakuza gang the Shuei-Gumi faction. And he's dragged into family affairs when he's forced into a relationship with Chitoge, the daughter of a rival gang's boss.

It’s a SHAFT show, which automatically diminishes it in my eyes. That being said, so was Arakawa Under the Bridge x Bridge and And Yet the Town Moves and I ended up really liking both of those shows. Nisekoi looks like it will have the same sense of zaniness that made the other two shows appealing. The sham relationship between Raku Ichijo and Chitoge Kirisaki reminds me of Oreshura.

Wizard Barristers - Episode 01
In 2018, humans and wizards live together in Tokyo. Police continue to protect order in society, but wizards are tried according to magical law, in special courts defended by wizard barristers. At age seventeen, Cecile has just become the youngest wizard barrister, and begins work at the Butterfly Law Offices. While she hasn't realized it yet, she has tremendous magical potential.

Cross Law and Order with Ally McBeal and set it in Harry Potter’s Tokyo.

If the show was a serious drama, it would probably be pretty amazing. But they have to sell Blu-rays, so it isn’t a serious drama. That being said, Cecil Sudō is so epic cute I will keep watching for her alone. The rest of the female cast is not far behind and ARMS animates them all lusciously.

World Conquest Zvezda Plot - Episode 01
Zevezda is a secret society that is bent on world conquest. It is led by a little girl named Kate Hoshimiya.

Could be good, depending on how they play it…

Winter 2014 Anime Empty Re: Winter 2014 Anime

Post by Piero Wed 15 Jan 2014 - 22:52

Kind of inclined to agree with you Taerkitty -as much as I like The Princess and the Pilot familiarity with it is not required for The Pilot's Love Song -in fact in some respects familiarity with The Princess and the Pilot seems to make The Pilot's Love Song more confusing, not less so!

From what I've been told the world of The Princess and the Pilot and The Pilot's Love Song has the two big countries from the movie as well as some some smaller ones.  Because of this I'd more or less assumed the kids with Spanish and Japanese names came from the Levahm Empire and Amatsukami.  But not only does that not appear to be the case, the Levahm Empire and Imperial Amatsukami don't even seem to be on the map of the known world in The Pilot's Love Song!  Which makes me suspect the history and geography the students in that series are learning might not be entirely accurate (which would kind of fit with that one kid questioning why Isla needs such heavy defenses for its voyage into the unknown).

Crunchyroll and ANN also seem to indicate that The Pilot's Love Song is a prequel to The Princess and the Pilot, so I've also wondered if they could be doing some sort of "ancient astronauts" kind of thing.  Though that seems a bit far fetched.

Thoughts on a few other shows:

Nobunaga: The Fool (Episode 2): I guess I'm one of the people who doesn't have much trouble with the disconnect between the characters in this anime and their historical namesakes.  While I'll admit the show has issues here and there, I like its crazyness and find it rather entertaining.  In fact my biggest concern with the show right now is that its only listed as being twelve episodes, and the show's story and cast of characters seem too big for that.  Maybe this is one of those shows where they're planning for it to be too seasons right from the get go (with a season off in between)?
Also, I actually am learning some history due to this show.  Real world history has come up a number of times in its discussion thread on one of the other forums I frequent.

Space Dandy (Episode 2): Episode two was a big improvement over episode one, but its still not so much my type of show.

Buddy Complex (Episode 2): Interesting end of episode twist here.  This show seems rather gundam-esque.  Unfortunately the Buddy system that is one of the show's core elements bugs me a bit -can't we have a real robot show that doesn't shoe-horn in super robot elements for once?

Wizard Barristers (Episode 1): I could have done without the main character getting groped by her frog familiar/animated plushy/whatever the heck that thing was, but I find this show intriguing, with some good action and interesting artwork.  One of the big question marks is how well the courtroom aspect of the series gets handled though.  The fact that the director of this show worked on Gallilei Donna is not confidence inspiring in that regard.  sweat

Winter 2014 Anime Empty Re: Winter 2014 Anime

Post by taerKitty Sun 19 Jan 2014 - 17:51

Nisekoi was more than I gave it credit for on my initial viewing.  I thought the show was boring and predictable halfway through the first episode and dropped it, but at Kisk's comments in chat, I decided to give it a second try.

There's one wordplay scene in Ep. 2 that totally won me over, so I'll likely be following this until it falters again.
Spoiler:

===

Buddy Complex is made by the the same people who gave us Bebop! so it's worth a watch.  I'm not a Funimation elite member, so I'll have to watch it when it's released to the plebes.  I can't afford (to justify to the spouse) spending more money on streaming anime on top of my CR subscription.

Ep. 1 was watchable, but not much more.  It's not so much that it's predictable, but that it doesn't do anything all that new.  Perhaps this is more a problem with the viewer than the show, but it didn't do anything for me.

==

World Conquest Zvezda Plot is silly and endearing.  The female lead dances on the line of a-frickin'-nnoying, but she's just goofball enough that I am mildly curious to see what she has in store.

I'll probably drop this show before end-of-season.  It doesn't have that 'keep' feel to it.

===

Out of boredom, I gave Monotagari a try.  Silly me, I didn't realize it was a followup to Bakemonotagori (I didn't remember the previous show, else the similar names might have clued me in.)

As I said, Bake- isn't that memorable (or at least the first two episodes weren't), and I fear Mono might not be as well.

At any rate, I said I was bored, and Alfi just posted, so I am bored no longer!

Winter 2014 Anime Empty Re: Winter 2014 Anime

Post by Kiskaloo Sun 19 Jan 2014 - 21:13

Space Dandy - Episodes 02 and 03

It’s pretty clear that Shinichiro Watanabe is letting his directing, writing and storyboarding staff have free reign to do what they want with their respective episodes. As such, I can understand why fans expecting another Cowboy Bebop are dazed and confused, even though Watanabe has said on many occasions that this show would be nothing like it.

I find the second halves of the episodes are stronger than the first as they all seem to follow the same formula: first half lots of boobs and bums, then crazy action after the advertising break.

I am now watching the show dubbed on Toonami and I have to say it works better because Funimation takes some liberties with the script that improve the delivery of the lines compared to the sub. That is is dubbed and on terrestrial television is the main reason I am staying with it as, overall, the content is nothing special.

The Pilot's Love Song [Toaru Hikushi e no Koiuta] - Episodes 02 and 03

Kal-el's backstory should hopefully make for some good drama. Have to say I am not impressed with their flight training program, though.

World Conquest Zvezda Plot - Episode 02

They’re playing it good. Good

Tonari no Seki-kun - Episodes 02 and 03

Rumi Yokai was the winner for episode 2. Her reactions to the Shogi game were hilarious and I liked she took an active role in the end. Alas, episode 3 was a snoozer.

Noragami - Episode 02

I’m liking the humor and I am liking Hiyori Iki.

Nisekoi - Episode 02

It’s a similar concept to Oreshura, but with more comedy and (probably) less harem (though I knew Kosaki Onodera is the girl Raku Ichijo made the promise to). Looks like it could have potential.

Sakura Trick - Episode 02

I would have preferred a yuri drama over a yuri comedy, but it’s a decently done yuri comedy so I’m sticking with it.

Engaged to the Unidentified - Episode 02

If the show concentrated on Kobeni and Hakuya, I’d be more engaged. However, it looks like it will focus primarily on Hakuya’s little sister Mashiro because, well, little girls sell. The humor is also pretty crude. I am interested in what happened to Kobeni and Hakuya as children, so while I probably should drop it, I’ll try and stay with it for now.

Wake Up, Girls! - Episode 02

Delivers on the fan service quotient, to be sure. I do wonder if the smaller idol groups (the ones not created and backed by the major record labels) have to suffer with that kind of thing in their early days… Overall not bad, but I wish it was more Natsuiro Kiseki than The iDOLM@STER.

Wizard Barristers - Episode 02

For the moment, looks more like one of those shows you watch because it looks good, not because it is good.

Super Sonico: The Animation - Episodes 02 and 03

Watching it purely for the fan service.

Buddy Complex - Episode 02

Reminds me of the original Gundam series with a bit of Pacific Rim technology thrown in. While never a fan of Gundam in general, I did like the original so I'll stick with it for the moment.

Nobunaga: The Fool - Episode 02

I didn’t find this show entertaining, so dropped.

Nobunagun - Episodes 02 and 03

Have to say I am more interested in Shio Ogura as a person that I am in her as an E-Gene Holder. Also not very interested in the rest of the E-Gene Holders, the Dagoo Organization or the battles. However, they're keeping the focus on Shio so it's keeping me entertained and still watching for now.

Witch Craft Works - Episode 02

Kagari Ayaka is a bad-ass, however I fear the episode formula will be multiple new cute Tower Witches will appear to threaten Takamiya Honoka and have their arses whipped by Ayaka. And frankly, that doesn’t sound like a winning recipe for the long haul.

Pupa - Episode 02

The episodes are too short and too censored to have any impact, so dropped.

D-Fragments - Episode 02

Liked this episode a fair bit less than the first and the new characters don't impress, so dropped.

Onee-chan ga Kita - Episodes 02 and 03

So bad even three minutes is asking too much. Dropped.

Strange+ - Episodes 02 and 03

Also not worth three minutes of my time. Dropped.

Winter 2014 Anime Empty Re: Winter 2014 Anime

Post by Piero Tue 21 Jan 2014 - 1:06

Of my two top picks for the season, The Pilot's Love Song had a relatively strong third episode (despite some crummy looking art work), while Nobunaga: The Fool had a relatively weak one.  It also seems that The Pilot's Love Song may actually be a sequel to The Princess and the Pilot rather than a prequel like ANN and Crunchyroll indicated, though that still doesn't explain the omission of the Levahmn Empire and Imperial Amatsuvia from the map of the known world.

Wizard Barristers does action better than courtroom drama.  Buddy Complex seems okay aside from being obvious yaoi doujin bait.  sweat  I found Sakura Trick's second episode weaker than its first.

I've now seen the first episode of Noragami, which didn't live up to the hype for me, and Inari, Konkon, Koi Iroha, which seems like it could be a decent slice of life/drama (and vaguely reminds me of last season's Gingitsune).

Inari, Konkon, Koi Iroha - Episodes 01 and 02
Inari Fushimi is a middle school girl who's never had a requited love, since she's a shy, clumsy and not very bright. One day, she witnesses her crush Kouji giving a letter to her classmate Akemi. Shocked and saddened, Inari rushes to a shrine, where the goddess Uka-no-Mitama-no-Kami appears to her. As thanks for saving a fox pup, as well as out of pity for her plight, the goddess grants Inari the power to shape-shift.

Forgot about this one until Piero mentioned it above. If a bit silly, I do like what I see. About all it shares in common with Gingitsune: Messenger Fox of the Gods is they both featured an Inari shine, however.

Yes, Pilot ep 3 is quite good. This looks to be a keeper.

Barrister ep 2 is decent. As was said above, it's less Law-and-Order and more action, but it's not too bad.

Winter 2014 Anime Empty Re: Winter 2014 Anime

Post by Piero Mon 10 Feb 2014 - 19:13

Bodacious Space Pirates was entertaining, but I found the conclusions to most of the story arcs rather unsatisfactory.  In particular it often felt like things were not adequately explained.

Anyhow, some updates:

Nobunaga: The Fool had quite a wham episode.  It really helped restore my confidence in the series, which had been waning due to the awkwardness of a few of the recent episodes.  That being said I'm inclined to agree somewhat with the people who feel the praise Nobunaga has been getting from other characters is not warranted by how he's been portrayed thus far.  Hopefully that will be corrected in the near future.

The Pilot's Love Song has been getting quite good, but the latest episode was too slow paced in my opinion even considering that its probably meant to be the last calm before the storm.

Inari, Konkon, Koi Iroha is more perverted than I had expected based on the first episode.  Granted its pretty tame compared to a lot of things out there but its still disappointing.  (I'm not totally against perverted humor -B Gata H Kei and Ben-to! were some of my favorite comedies of the past few years- but I think there's too much of it in anime, or at the very least too much of it that is lame.)

My opinion of Wizard Barristers and Sakura Trick hasn't changed that much.

Winter 2014 Anime Empty Re: Winter 2014 Anime

Post by Kiskaloo Tue 11 Feb 2014 - 0:53

Since I’m roughly mid-point in the season for the shows I am watching…

Nagi no Asukara (Nagi-Asu: A Lull in the Sea)
The second half of this show is even more amazing than the first half, completely putting to rest any fears I had.

Gin no Saji Dai-2-ki (Silver Spoon – Season 2)
Every bit as wonderful as the first series and a show that generates real feelings of happiness in me when it is over.

The Pilot's Love Song [Toaru Hikushi e no Koiuta]
A lot of interesting character and plot twists combined with an interesting cast make this my favorite of the non-recurring shows this season.

Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions - Heart Throb
In general, enjoying it much as I did the original.

Space Dandy
The second halves are pretty much universally better than the first half, but who wrote the screenplay has an important role in how good the overall episode is. Kimiko Ueno’s third, fourth and seventh episodes were decent and Ichiro Okuchi’s fifth episode was brilliant. On the other hand, Dai Sato’s second and sixth episodes were rather weak.

Wizard Barristers
This show has grown over the past few episodes from just looking good to actually being good.

World Conquest Zvezda Plot
Another show with a solid cast that makes it enjoyable to watch.

Noragami
At first I watched it mainly for Hiyori Iki, however Yato’s backstory is now becoming engaging.

Engaged to the Unidentified
At risk of being dropped, Episode 06 presented an unexpected twist that now has me willing to stay with it to the conclusion. That being said, I wish the show took itself more seriously as the comedy feels a bit forced. As a drama, it probably would be much better.

Witch Craft Works
As beautiful as it looked, the formula it started with was not one that would have kept me, but the last few episodes have helped lay a foundation that has me interested enough in seeing how it ends even if, like Engaged to the Unidentified it really would benefit from a more serious tone.

Buddy Complex
It is essentially a Cold War version of the original Gundam anime, with a bit of Pacific Rim tech thrown in. That being said, I ended up rather liking the first Gundam series and I am so far rather liking this.

Robot Girls Z
A recent addition to Crunchyroll, which is nice as it looked like the fansubbers may have dropped it and I find the show hilarious.

Pupipo
Azu's wackiness for the supernatural is kind of fun. At three minutes an episode, it's a quick watch.

Kill La Kill
The second half is not quite as crazy as the first half, which is fine with me as we do get more character development and while I expected the plot twist of Episode 16, I did not expect the one from Episode 18.

Soni-Ani: SUPER SONICO THE ANIMATION
The girls are hot. The show is not. Getting close to downloading the fan subs so I can just see what the girls are wearing and skip the story. sweat

Nisekoi
Dropped with Episode 5 as I have the feeling that, like Toradora, it’s going to end with a pairing I do not approve of. And with the exception of Kosaki Onodera, I find the cast and their antics uninteresting. I’ll tune in again for the last episode to see if I am right.

Sakura Trick
Dropped with Episode 4. The show seems to be just about how many times Haruka Takayama can get Yuu Sonoda to kiss her. Aoi Hana and Sasameki Koto did yuri so much better.

Wake Up, Girls!
Dropped with Episode 4 because it reminded me of The iDOLM@STER, just with less cute girls and a cheaper budget.

Nobunagun
Stuck with it through Episode 05, which was longer than I expected. However, with Episode 05 they (re)introduced the rest of the E-GENEs and most of them I found unpalatable.

Inari, Konkon, Koi Iroha
Dropped with Episode 4 as the show just didn’t really resonate with me.

Kill la Kill - episode 17

To quote a mate: Shit just got real.

I started watching this because it was over the top and awesome. I like now that Trigger's letting us know that, under all the madness, they were actually hiding some genuinely good characters.

Also, might I just take a moment to note just how effectively scored I think this show is.

Winter 2014 Anime Empty Re: Winter 2014 Anime

Post by taerKitty Tue 11 Feb 2014 - 12:48

Witch Craft Works - I started up on it again because I'm sick at home and wanted something to keep my mind off my illness.  While I greatly respect my peers' opinions, this show doesn't have much for me.  It's full of a lot of one-note descriptors: she's perfect, they're fawning, etc.  Even the recent 'big surprise' (no spoilers) had me yawning.  Once I get better, I'll bump it off my queue.

Wizard Barristers - I originally dumped the show because I couldn't stand the MC's design, and the sudden and showy mech-from-nowhere didn't help.  Thanks to Kisk for talking me off that ledge. The show is pretty good.  No, it's not going to give any US criminal procedural shows any competition, but it does balance the de rigeur anime action with some actual thinking and research.

However... there is a Chris Carter like omni-conspiracy that's being hinted at, and I feel that's just weak writing.  If, like the X-Files, it becomes all about the conspiracy, I'll probably drop it.

Hamatora - Silly, overpowered people trying to be private eyes.  However, there's also that uber-conspiracy lurking in the shadows.  The show itself isn't that strong, so this will be the first to go.

Magical Warfare - Interesting concept, and has some interesting character twists, but in the end, it seems to rely too much on CG and not enough of intelligent writing.  I'll keep watching this until the gloss wears off.

The Pilot's Love Song - There was a recent plot twist about the heroine that has me hooked.  I don't care if the show starts to reek, I'm going to follow this show just to see how that plot arc gets resolved.

===

Log Horizon - None of the above shows are as compelling to me as last season's Log Horizon, now finishing it's two-season run.  Yes, it's a "you're stuck in an MMORPG" anime, but it's unlike any other I've seen (.Hack and SAO being my limited range).

MMO mechanics play a lot in this series.  In an obvious plot line (so I'm not going to tag it as a spoiler), a neophyte party learns that just charging in isn't going to do it.  However, unlike other shows where they may somehow 'learn to work together', LH has one of the rookie characters coordinating them - "His HP are low, please heal him. Your spell's cool down is about to finish in 5,4,3,2,1. Hallway is clear, no other inbound."

Yes, it totally shatters the fourth wall.  The show infodumps a LOT.  "The monk is one of the four attack based classes whose magic has very short cool downs so he can chain them, always keeping his opponent off-guard."  Yes, the main character THINKS THIS into the audio track.  Total infodump!

However, it's good for those of us not familiar with MMOs (or those who play with MMOs that have different class attributes).  As someone who has not played a lot of MMOs, but have heard lots of war stories (usually about raids) from coworkers who play, LH captures the technical side very well.

That's not to say it isn't well plotted.  If anything, there are so many plot threads open, I'm worried they might not all be concluded in the remaining 5 or 6 episodes.

everyone seems to be commenting on the lack of Court procedure in Wizard Barristers, Japanese courts are kind of Medieval in operation, they don't have the posturing of western courts,  their conviction rate is very high at 99% largely because they rely on written confessions and choose to prosecute the cases more likely to result in a conviction, in fact most crimes don't even go to court,

wiki wrote:The nation's criminal justice officials follow specified legal procedures in dealing with offenders. Once a suspect is arrested by national or prefectural police (See Prefectures of Japan), the case is turned over to attorneys in the Supreme Public Prosecutors Office, who are the government's sole agents in prosecuting lawbreakers. Under the Ministry of Justice's administration, these officials work under Supreme Court rules and are career civil servants who can be removed from office only for incompetence or impropriety.

Prosecutors presented the government's case before judges in the Supreme Court and the four types of lower courts: high courts, district courts, summary courts, and family courts. Penal and probation officials administer programs for convicted offenders under the direction of public prosecutors (see Judicial System of Japan).

After identifying a suspect, police have the authority to exercise some discretion in determining the next step. If, in cases pertaining to theft, the amount is small or already returned, the offense petty, the victim unwilling to press charges, the act accidental, or the likelihood of a repetition not great, the police can either drop the case or turn it over to a prosecutor.

Reflecting the belief that appropriate remedies are sometimes best found outside the formal criminal justice mechanisms, in 1990 over 70 percent of criminal cases were not sent to the prosecutor.

there are around 30,000 Lawyers in Japan meaning they have 11 lawyers per 100,000,as compared to 1.2 million in the US which has 281 lawyers per 100,000 people

Well the show is only 20 minutes so they can only spend so much time on things. I do kind of wish they used the two cops a bit more, as they seem interesting people. But in general, I am fine with the pacing of the show and honestly would probably not like it if they spend most of the time in the court.

Nice to see another 787 in anime with Episode 07 of Wizard Barristers: Benmashi Cecil, even if they used the Business Class cabin from the 777. Razz  (The 787 is 2+2+2 vs. the 2+3+2 of the 777). Japan Airlines launched service between Tokyo and Boston with the 787-8 so stands to reason it would still be a 787 in 2018. Space Brothers also makes extensive use of the 787 (in All Nippon Airways colors) for Tokyo-Houston, though ANA has yet to launch the service (though they have time - the show is set in 2025 Wink ).

And after delivering an episode so crushingly god-awful (#6 - Cruising of the Dead), Super Sonico: The Animation then follows it with "Star Rain" which was almost Tamayura-esque in quality of story.

And Space Dandy breaks the cycle with Episode 08, where the first half was better than the second half (the script was by noted screenplay writer Keiko Nobumoto who worked on such shows as Cowboy Bebop, Macross Frontier and Wolf's Rain (which she was also the mangaka).

Kiskaloo, Keiko Nobumoto was staff on Macross Plus, not Macross Frontier.

Also, I'd recommend you give Inari, Konkon Koi Iroha a second chance.  I was sort of unimpressed for a while but now I'm glad I didn't drop it.

With its latest episode, The Pilot's Love Song has finally established a firm connection with The Princess and the Pilot.  I'm pretty sure the pilot of that Levamme Empire fighter that saved Kal-el and Airi was supposed to be Charles.  In the novel The Princess and the Pilot was based on Charles had the code name "Black Tailed Gull" on his mission to save Fana/Juana, so I don't think its a coincidence that Kal-el noticed a Sea Gull painted on the side of the fighter that saved him.

Anyway a very strong episode even if I thought that the student observer/gunners fighting heavily armed armed fighter aircraft with bolt action rifles was absurd.

Nobunaga: The Fool also had a very strong episode this week.  It's not enough to completely wash away the weaknesses of the third through fifth episodes, but hopefully its a sing of things to come.

Well, you fight with what you have. That being said, it did make the enemy pilots look like idiots in terms of their skill and strategy. They should have cut down the entire Cadoques High's Aerial Division on the first pass - a pass they should have done from below rather than the one angle the students could return fire from.

Just finished episodes 05, 06 and 07 and I continue to find myself not really interested in the characters nor the stories.

Tonari no Seki-kun, on the other hand, is back in the rotation as I like the episodes where Rumi gets overly-interested in what Seki is doing and that was the case for the last three episodes.

Everywhere Yasumi Umetsu went wrong with Gallilei Donna, he's gone right with Wizard Barristers: Benmachi Cecil.

I do wish, however, I had started this show once the run was complete because these one week waits between episodes are really annoying. Smile

It kills me Sentai Filmworks won the license for this because their Blu-rays are usually crap and this show is so beautifully animated.

With so many series, the ending is the letdown.  So often, they either

This show is already doing a #1.  Let's hope it doesn't produce a #2.
