Chapter 3: Treat your Cyborg Well and they'll treat you swell, treat your cyborg like trash and your ass will be left dead in the grass!
By Fernando G.
In the two known cases the SWA had to deal with, handlers went through various situations with their cyborgs, often losing their lives to them.
In the Fratello On The Run Mission, Handler Ernesto decides that he would take his cyborg, Pia, to Padana for study and dissection, but then decides that he would not put cyborg in danger. But this decision comes too late as the other fratello teams go out hunting for them.
It is in this case, here Ernesto's fair to above fair treatment of Pia that Pia does her best in protecting Ernesto, getting killed in a building collapse she created to kill the cyborg Henrietta in order to protect Ernesto. Henrietta would survive the building collapse.
Up to this point, Pia had defended Ernesto from attacks from all the other cyborgs, including: Henrietta, Rico, Triela, Claes, and Angie - the SWA best hunter/killer cyborgs. Ernesto would be later killed when Pia was not around to protect him.
In the Elsa Incident, Handler Luaro is assassinated by his own cyborg who had killed herself after killing him. Investigation in this incident had shown that Luaro has mistreated Elsa, treating her more like a machine and not as a child.
Both Pia and Elsa were programmed to have feelings for their handlers, bonding the girls to the men who would train them. This Trust Bond in many cases with the cyborgs have become the emotion of Love. In the case of Fratello on the Run Mission, this love was returned to the cyborg Pia and she did her best for her handler, Ernesto. In the Elsa Incident this love was betrayed and abused, hurting the cyborg Elsa to the point where she turned on her handler and then on herself.
It goes to show that the cyborgs are not machines, but people with emotions. Betray that emotion and your cyborg will be more than likely turn on you. Reward the cyborg and treat them with kindness and gifts and they will do their best for you. There is no hiding this. Handlers who had treated their cyborgs well had excellent mission completions. Handlers who treated their cyborgs like trash had to constantly deal with system malfunctions and failed missions. Treated bad enough, cyborgs do turn on their cyborgs. Plain and simple, the cyborgs are not machine tools designed for killing. They are human minds connected to machine tools designed for killing.

Two Case Studies In Handler/Cyborg Relations. Victor Hilshire explains his "hands off" technique, while Sandro Ricci demonstrates "hands on" (with diagrams).

Addendum, by Lieutenant James Spettro:
It must be noted that, despite their nature as people, a cyborg is still a resource just as much as any other human operative. Care must be taken that handlers DO NOT FORGET that a cyborg is, by its construction, a weapon. If unconstrained, a single cyborg is capable of leveling a city block. Care and control of this resource is absolutely critical, and it is a mistake to begin treating your cyborg as your child rather than as a subordinate or as a tool. Despite being a fratello, you and your cyborg are not related and, in this handler's opinion, you should never treat your cyborg as if you were related.

Re: The Cyborg Handbook.
Additions to Chapter 8 By Salvatore Battaglia
(abusive handler to cyborg Helen)
"Condition and Control, discipline through intimidation and constant drill with maximum use of Conditioning.
Note: Unlike Handler Hilshire, my firm belief is that once the hand has been raised, it must come down..... hard.
(Hilshire confronts Battaglia regarding this point, eventually leading to the two raising their voices against one another until other agents break them up)
