Railguns use electromagnetic power (not gunpowder, like in normal guns) to fire bullets. The advantage to using electromagnetic power is that the bullets will fly at at something like 3 km per second. Of course, the energy required to provide power for such a thing would be very, very high.
Nobody uses railguns yet. All those that have been made thus far are just experimental.

I love the technology... Well Its basically Electroconduction and the creation of MASSIVE electromagnetic forces that accelerate the Projectile at up to 10,000 mph out of the Weapons Muzzle.

Re: What is Rail Gun?
A rail gun uses 2 electromagnetically charged induction rails (where the name comes from). An object (your 'bullet') is placed on the rails, and the rails are charged up to maximum force, pulling the object by magnetic force. The power of the magnet force is that is can pull ferrous and non-ferrous objects at high speeds (past Mach 10 in some experiments). But to achieve this kind of power requires very long rails and a lot of electromagnetic force behind it...

Well actually, the US Navy has railguns in serivce on their ship already.
Thinking about it, since railguns can go very fast speeds and are very powerful, what's the possibility they be able to seriously hurt or even kill a cyborg in one shot?

The Possibility is.... Well Why the heck are we talking about this... The only practical Railguns have around 150mm and up caliber... They WILL kill a Cyborg in one direct hit.

Yeah. I actually knew that already.
The cyborgs may have carbon-fibered skin and synthetic muscles, but I knew that they would not survive something like a railgun.

As far as I can remember, beatrice got nailed by a .50 BMG round and her limbs got torn to streds by the impact, if a 50 BMG does that then a Cyborg will have a snowball's chance in hell to survive any type of railgun and/or guass cannon.

Yeah, and the chances may be even less for them survive something like (in relation to this) Starcraft's C-14 Imapler Gauss Rifle.

Considering that C-14 Impaler rounds can punch through hardened Zerg carapaces and whatever-the-Hell advanced alloys the Protoss use, yeah, I dare say they would make short work of the cyborgs' skimpy little CFRP body armor.Yeah, and the chances may be even less for them survive something like

Let's not forget that the 20mm, unlike smaller rounds, carries an explosive charge and blows up on impact. Therefore, the shell, 20mm in caliber, can end up leaving a foot-wide hole.

The NTW 20 was what they used on Beatrice. But .50's were used to defend the nuke plant and they disassembled Triela pretty effectively.

I haven't read any chapters past the one where she got shot. I know that the rifle used can be switched between .50 BMG and 20mm in under a few minutes in the field. I just assumed they used .50.

And given the opertunity, a good sniper with a .50bmg rifle can destroy the bearings on the turret of a talk, stopping it from turning.

I've never yet heard of anyone doing this for real, bro, but damned if it doesn't sound like an awesome thing to do. Re: What is Rail Gun?
It is Completely impossible to lock a Tank's (modern one's) Turret with a hit on the turret ring... That coz the Bearing and everything is recessed inside the hull... Tank designers are smarter than to leave it out in the open...
Tiger I Tank crews back in WWII noticed that their Tank Hulls were completely invincible even against things like the 122mm of the IS-2 and the 90mm of the Pershing once they have turned their tank to face 1:30 or 10:30 from the incoming shot.. coz it effectively gives the same effect of sloped armor on their tanks... So Instead of Turning the Turret they turn the hull around and keep the Turret at 1:30 position (1:30 was better since the loader has more room and the shell stowage is positioned right beside him in this position)
And also... I keep saying... The Solothurn S18-1100....
Fires a 20x138mmB cartridge... which is almost twice the power of the 20x82mm of the NTW-20.... and the S18 feeds from a 5-10-20 round mags instead of the 3 rounds of the NTW... the S18 is select fire with either semiauto or 300 rounds per minute.... and all at a svelte 57kg.
But anyways... The Railgun is MUCH MUCH more efficient than the Gauss... the only problem is that it sort of has the habit of destroying itself after a few shots....
I dont know why... or how I have knowledge of this things or even if they will be useful in my life... but heck... its nice.

That being said...
You'll have to show me some proof for this one. You cannot expect me to believe the Tiger I could withstand the IS-2's 122mm. The cats had a hard enough time dealing with the T-34/85.!Achtung! wrote:Tiger I Tank crews back in WWII noticed that their Tank Hulls were completely invincible even against things like the 122mm of the IS-2 and the 90mm of the Pershing once they have turned their tank to face 1:30 or 10:30 from the incoming shot.. coz it effectively gives the same effect of sloped armor on their tanks...

I don't know if rail guns would be much use against the cyborgs. Dante's men would have trouble lifting one, let alone pointing it at Triela & Co.

Seems to me that a big advantage of such a system would be a relative absence of recoil. Without the need for heavy, energy absorbing mountings the weapons system could be made very mobile.Nachtsider wrote:Railguns use electromagnetic power (not gunpowder, like in normal guns) to fire bullets. Looking ahead, any future war will certainly involve shooting down enemy communication & navigation satellites. A magnet powered rail gun would do a better job of this than a recoil-hampered conventional gun, which would throw off the attitude of its platform (spacecraft, another satellite) every time it fired.

The power supply needed to feed the thing would probably be anything but mobile, alas.

Re: What is Rail Gun?
the problem with rail guns is, as was stated above, they destroy themselves as you use them,
The rails need to withstand enormous repulsive forces during shooting, and these forces will tend to push them apart and away from the projectile. As rail/projectile clearances increase, arcing develops which causes rapid vaporization and extensive damage to the rail surfaces and the insulator surfaces. This limited some early research railguns to one shot per service interval.
The inductance and resistance of the rails and power supply limit the efficiency of a railgun design.

Another definition for a Railgun, whould be a term used for some types of benchrest shooting.
It's a rifle that's put on a heavy plate or vice'd to the shooting bench.

I don't think modern tanks have exposed bearings. The turret hugs the electronically-traversed hull.
