Daily life in the military Empty Re: Daily life in the military

Post by Lyndist Fri 8 Apr 2011 - 12:20

haizzz

This topic is a very interesting topic. Ok, me'll start with myself

We begin with the most interesting part of my army life

The first major battle of me

It was a day in April - I was still a low-level officers. We received orders to prepare each one to bring food for three days, three ammunition boxes with weapons . When we gather, we find that the unit set consisting of an officer - the lowest level is a sergeant, a radio soldier

I felt strange, but still serving.

We are not marching in the truck as usual, this time we were taken by helicopter . There are some voices emerged, we all understand - this is a big battle . I feel very excited, this is my first time participating in a real battle - not a rehearsal

After about five or six hour flight, we arrived at a field base. We gathered with about two hundred people . We are assigned to a unit with powerful firepower: RPGs-7, RPD, M79 and AK-47 MK III. There are also two SVD Dragunov sniper rifle used by two lieutenant sniper

We were ordered to rest, we get used to each other - most people are officers much older than me. in this unit I was one of the youngest people

But when me ask this is where, and why we come here? They did not answer and said "this is the orders. " .But I know that they do not know more than me

We stayed there for three days. does not leave the base - just wait

Finally, we received orders to move.

When we arrived there, the public has been prepared by the engineers. Our distributed maps indicating the location of minefields. after the assignment of positions available. we continue to wait

April is very hot, we were waiting for two days - I feel very tired and slight fever. but I did not tell to the commanding officer - for fear will be taken out this task. The older officers help me a lot: they give me is located at the roof, give me the fresh vegetables

Finally. enemies also appear

It was a convoy, a total of seventeen cars. Consists of four pickups mounted with machine guns, ten trucks and three vehicles

We wait for the convoy to go to the middle road. At that time, many anti-tank rounds were fired. Leading car and two vehicles at the rear exploded

I stood straight up from my position, fired several rounds toward the nearest car. Glass window of the vehicles shattered, but those in the vehicles managed to escape. They returned fire and threw grenades at us - but our position is well protected, the grenade did not cause any effect on us.

I use the RPD machine guns - shooting a lot towards the underneath . Do not know if to hit or not. The car caught fire

When they saw we had prepared, and better equipped. they move to the truck - which still intact (I was silently cursing the gunner using RPGs, "why did not they blow them up?")

They get a lot of machine guns and grenade launchers from the truck. and fired on toward us. These things can not be joking. I hid behind the fortifications, loaded guns and throwing grenades out

Right at that moment, the enemy retreated into the forest. but we have set mines in the surrounding road

Many voices and explosions, with both Vietnamese and English.

The commander ordered us to stop shooting

We do not understand anything, but we still observe

Enemies quickly climbed to two vehicles remaining, drive straight away.

We go out and look around: Many dead bodies lying on the vehicles, some are lying around. In the forest there are also many corpses, but I dare not go into it - maybe there are still many unexploded mines within

I go around and see that they all dead-all Asian men, some who looked like Cambodia. some are white and stout: could this be who was screaming in Vietnamese. no one is european

I came alongside the truck, they loaded boxes of weapons originating from China.

Another car carrying a metal bucket - we break it with a hammer: Inside is a lot of money -but too bad, they are all counterfeit money

I saw the officers rummaged through a vehicles, and found a bag (which I often see in movies). I guess that's true bag containing the money - but I never asked. we also find a lot of machinery and food on the vehicles.

I found a cloth bag containing several papers, and delivered them the commander

about two or three hours later, a convoy here to escort us to bases. we go back and check numerical: Ten people were injured - all of which are only slight wounds. We were orders to clean up and return by the day

Later, when I became an officer. I know that that day we went to the border between Thailand and Cambodia. Enemy we is fighting that day is Việt Tân. an organization that includes the remaining part of the REPUBLIC OF VIETNAM. They illegally crossed the border into the United States, living in the CAM district - in Little Saigon .

They gathered the gunmen. Trying to cross the border to set up base. Counterfeit money they bring is to sabotage Vietnam.

Those Cambodia who we found was the bandit was hired to guide the way

We stopped them. The officer knew inside of the truck has many valuables, they ordered the the gunman did not fire on the truck. They also intentionally released the rest of them to confuse the enemy

It was my first battle, because we can totally overwhelming, so I was not afraid. I just want to shoot at it and kill a lot

Cool story, bro.

My military service was way too short to be of any real fun, and nowhere near as exciting as yours.

U.S. Air Force here. I've been to Iraq twice, Afghanistan three times, Kuwait, and Italy.

In Iraq in early 2004 I was on convoy duties. Both one of the best and worst times of my life.

Last year (2010) at Kandahar, I was amongst those that were caught up in the taliban's attack on the base. Wild times.

Not Military, but Agency, 1982 - 1998. Wont say which but I dealt with military ops during this time.

Also, NYC Police 1988-1998. Just a transitional phase on a part time basis, but it was allowed.

Anothing special, and even if there were, there are some things I like to keep private.

@Nacht: J'ai vu ce que t'as fait la.

Marine Corps 2001-2009. In spite of multiple attempts, I was never deployed... instead I found myself volunteering for a variety of assignments that I THOUGHT were deployable, but turned out to be quite the opposite. While interesting, it was not at all what I wanted to do.

I am currently in the process of bringing my body weight down (from 245 to 205) so I can reenlist... DESPITE the current shenanigans involving the payment of those on active duty and deployment.

Another US Air Force vet here...1992-99. I was a weapons loader in an F-16 squadron.

I was stationed at Spangdahlem Air Base, Germany (which is in the far west, near Bitburg) the whole time but being in a fighter squadron I was deployed quite a bit. We participated in both the the Bosnia & Kosovo conflicts, as well as numerous rotations to Turkey to enforce the no-fly zone over Northern Iraq.

I can't really boast of being a grizzled and decorated combat veteran, I've just spent a few years as a Weekend Warrior in an Engineer regiment of the Territorial Army (combined National Guard & Army Reserve, effectively), tramping about a damp moor near Ripon and being shouted at. I left a couple of years ago due to my day-work being too demanding but I've always appreciated the Army as an invaluable institution and I'm going to rejoin later this year. I've also been seriously contemplating moving up to be a full-time Regular - with precisely zero encouragement from everyone around me, but I'm an old dinosaur who still feels duty pricking at his conscience.
