Thoughts of Summer 2010 Anime Titles
The spring season's done in a few weeks so let's start to move on to discussion of upcoming summer titles. You can find a listing of upcoming TV titles for summer here.
By the looks of it, a good number of titles are focused around a horror/mystery theme with others being the usual stash of ecchi/ romantic comedy titles. Feel free to post your thoughts on the upcoming summer anime lineup.

Strikes Witches 2 for sure.
Seitokai Yakuindomo sounds like a variation on Seitokai no Ichizon.
Maybe Amamgami SS.

Dead easy. Madhouse is doing Highschool of the Dead which means I will be watching with uncharacteristic fanboy rabidness.

Re: Thoughts of Summer 2010 Anime Titles
I'm sort of with Kisk on something for once. High School of the Dead doesn't really sound like my cup of tea and indeed sounds kind of strange, but with all the praise I've heard for it here I may check it out.
I'll add an interest in Strike Witches 2. As terrible as Strike Witches was in some ways, it actually was pretty entertaining.
Anime No Chakra's series about some sort of occult academy doesn't sound like quite so much my thing, but I'm kind of interested based on how good Sora No Woto and Senkou No Night Raid have been.
Otherwise not a lot jumped out at me at first glance from the previews that I can remember. Might take another look though.

Re: Thoughts of Summer 2010 Anime Titles
Did anyone else notice that Amagami is being adapted to anime this summer? That was something that Yu worked on, right?
Bleh, not much there this season. Not certain I'll be able to suffer through the fan service in HSotD, but I'll probably give it a shot anyway. Shiki's art style interests me and I do love a good light horror, so I might try that one as well. I think Nurarihyon no Mago is on my list of "to read"s, so I may eventually pick that one up, but it looks like it has a lot of potential to just be a lame shounen.
PS: If you want to get into a good starter occult series, Ghost Hunt is excellent.

Occult academy types do not equal magic/super power types. I enjoy series that revolve around magic, occult, myth, and other like things, but this series looks like "you're mileage may very" to me. I don't know a whole lot about the series (watched the trailer and read the ANN on it), but for some reason this series strikes me as one I wouldn't like. Unless you're into Japanese occult myths, I would say this series may not hold your interest. Not trying to diss a potentially good series, just trying to warn you that it will be nothing whatsoever like Senkou No Night Raid.Piero wrote:Anime No Chakra's series about some sort of occult academy doesn't sound like quite so much my thing, but I'm kind of interested based on how good Sora No Woto and Senkou No Night Raid have been.

So far, Shiki and Occult Academy have my interest for horror-themed titles and I'll give Amagami SS a shot. As long as Amagami doesn't degenerate into typical main male lead helping a bunch of helpless girls situation, then I could enjoy it.

I think one of the problems Ghost Hunt has is that it's title reminds me of that series so much.

I wasn't really expecting it to be and truth be told neither the promotional art nor the description appeals to me very much. It's just that the first two Anime No Chakra shows have both been at least above average, so I've been starting to associate the project with quality productions.
Also, I noticed that High School of the Dead is being produced by Madhouse, the studio that did Black Lagoon, Gunslinger Girl Season One, and Monster. That speaks well for it. Then again, they also did Kamen No Maid Guy (Masked Maid Guy -it's a comedy about an incredibly gar male combat maid that was funny to begin with but which I didn't bother to finish) and seriously botched the adaptation of Allison and Lillia (a show seems like it could have been really good) so we'll see how it goes.
On another note, anyone feel like an awful lot of the stuff that's set to air next season seems sort of copycat-ish?

Re: Thoughts of Summer 2010 Anime Titles
I might check out Occult Academy on booby factor alone plus horromedy has always been an oddball genre in which every title either hits it out of the park (Shaun of the Dead) or falls flat into hell (Attack of the Killer Tomatoes).
Osake Hamlet is one that I'll give a chance simply because I <3 Osaka.
Strike Witches was so full of win that Strike Witches 2 is simply a given.
And to whet my voracious Shoujo appetite, Setokai Yakuindomo. Although this seems like just another harem-anime; the premise is interesting enough to warrant a three episode trial.

High School of the Dead trailer is now out.
Nice animation. Shows the gore well.
Have to say the girls don't look all that cute to my eyes, so the bouncing boobies and panty shots don't do much for me.
So I'm giving it a "pass", but for the fans, I expect you'll be pleased as the production quality looks solid.

Re: Thoughts of Summer 2010 Anime Titles
I only recently became aware of Highschool of the Dead, only really taking notice of it when they announced the anime - but after reading over the manga I've come to look forward to it with considerable anticipation. It's a really taut piece that's remained quite focused despite being published over four years with a couple of long hiatuses, there is some really powerful body horror - some of the zombie bites, particularly in the early chapters, are genuinely stomach-churning - and while there is a whole cavalcade of ripe ladies heavy with womanhood, gun nuts will be slavering just as much over the high-fidelity firearms the battles are lavished with. The characters are also pretty well-drawn - they have their basis in tropes but they respond believably to the changing situation around them, and the hero has a refreshing personality. He's not the usual insipid limp-wristed harem lead, but he's not a "GAR" beefcake either - forthright, without being fantastic.
It's also interesting for defying the usual zombie metafiction, too. In many stories zombies are used as anti-capitalist allegories, with the zombies either representing consumerism, or else the military and elites is shown up to be incompetent and incapable in the face of the shambling horde of reeking change. Highschool of the Dead does the exact opposite, however...

- Spoiler:
- A right-wing ultranationalist group provides safe harbour against the zombie hordes, and it is the 'normal people' who undermine it; the army is shown to be quite effective at fighting zombies (even if they're spread too thin to halt their advance totally); there's a few scenes where the characters lament the stupidity of anti-government radicals coming out of the woodwork for a whinge when there's the more pressing matter of the living dead chewing off people's faces.

Speaking of previews, Cat Shit One, the Gulf II update of Apocalypse Meow, was first trailered back in 2008, and is finally coming to broadcast this season. I'm quite enthusiastic about this one as well, it looks like a hoot:

So, at Anime Expo, a few notable titles are being licensed.
But what the hell? Highschool of the Dead is being licensed, even though it hasn't even aired yet.
No matter how you put that, that's just weird. Awesome, but weird.
Hopefully other series that haven't been licensed will stop being neglected soon.

Commercial companies probably have access to preview reels, but even so things like that can happen with a few shows if the buzz around them is strong enough. The anime film Spriggan (which is a stupendous action flick up there with the best even if "doesn't count" by being animated - it has jungle warfare, arctic warfare, urban warfare, suicide bombings, swordfights, fistfights, gunfights, psykers, cyborgs, Action Archaeology, Biblical prophecy, underground bases, literal cliffhangers, global environmental catastrophe and a guy being chased by a T-Rex all in one movie! Well worth checking out) was licensed not only before it aired, but before it was even produced - ADV snapped it up on the script alone.

Guess I'm scrapping Amagami SS. Show's way too plain with the dating sim character archetypes and it looks like the show will be divided into several arcs where the male lead tries asking out one of the girls in each arc.

Update: Sentai Filmworks is the studio that's licensing Highschool of the Dead. I'm not really familiar with many of their dubs, but Appleseed was pretty awesome.
Highschool of the Dead will also be simulcasted by The Anime Network, which is a quite reliable website. The first episode will be registered users only, but perhaps the rest will be public. In all honesty, I'm probably sticking to fansubs unless they take too long.

Sentai is one of the companies ADV fragmented into, but I don't know how many ex-ADV people they actually have, especially since they were a sub only licensor for a couple years.

So is this one case where the show actually is as bad as the description makes it sound?
I sometimes wonder who the hell writes the awful plot descriptions that are included in these things. Sometimes the shows honestly are pretty bad, but there's also some that have had horrid plot descriptions but actually turned out well.

Yeah, anime licensers finally caught on that there are a great number of people who want to watch subbed anime online shortly after the episode airs in Japan. I'm surprised it took them so long to realize that the only way to fight fansubbers is to provide content in the same manner.Five_X wrote:Highschool of the Dead will also be simulcasted by The Anime Network, which is a quite reliable website.
I typically stay far away from anything thing adapted from a dating sim these days. They're all pretty much the same - a kinda spineless, somewhat perverted highschool guy receives attention from multiple attractive girls for no apparent reason. Doesn't really make a lot of sense, and it doesn't make for a very good story either. F/SN is the only anime adaption of a dating sim game that was decent that I can think of - and that's only because the original plot was good to begin with.Ggultra2764 wrote:Guess I'm scrapping Amagami SS. Re: Thoughts of Summer 2010 Anime Titles
Actually, to shed a little light on it, there is quite a difference between standard visual novels and dating sims, known as ren'ai ganes. In a ren'ai game, the goal is to "win" one of the girls. They may be eroge games, but the main point is that the main objective, beyond plot, is the girl. In an actual visual novel, the plot is not based on girls, though games like Fate/Stay Night and Ever 17 do have elements of this. Though similar, they have key differences which make them vastly different.
Despite that, not all ren'ai games are bad, On a technicality, School Days fits into that genre. But that's enough of a lesson.
Now you know!

I already knew about the dating sim/visual novel distinction, but I had thought ren'ai game was a term used to describe a non-ero visual novel that still had a romantic plotline...

Re: Thoughts of Summer 2010 Anime Titles
Ren'ai (恋愛) basically just means "romance" or "falling in love". I think the distinction between ren'ai sims and eroges is mainly a non-Japanese one. The Japanese Wikipedia article doesn't seem to distinguish them. So I guess they could overlap - you could have ero and non-ero ren'ai sims, and likewise could have ren'ai and non-ren'ai eroges (you could have an adult game that does not involve romance).

Re: Thoughts of Summer 2010 Anime Titles
But ren'ai more specifically is a dating sim, whether it be bishoujo, otome, or yaoi/shonen-ai. They do overlap with eroge elements, making some ren'ai eroges just called H-Games. "Ren-ai" isn't just the romance, but the building of it, in dating sim form. The definitions when it comes to such games are odd and sometimes confusing, so it's easy to mix them up.
To give solid examples, Fate/stay night and Tsukihime are non-ren'ai eroges: though they do have romance, that's not entirely the focus, and it isn't in dating sim format. On the other hand, Kanon and Clannad could be considered ren'ai games, as the plot revolves around the girls, and they have similarities to dating sims.

They were evidently licensed for US release (at Anime Expo?), so the first OAV is only on "short time availability" from one of the fansubbers.
There are fansubbing groups who do fansub licensed material, but you'll need to use someone like Tokyo Toshokon to find them since AnimeSuki will not list fan subs for licensed titles.

I'm curious as to what was edited out, considering that the TV edit has nudity and that the "boot blade" scene made me cringe and I'm used to some fairly intense violence in Black Lagoon.
I also don't remember characters being able to dodge bullets as easily in the earlier Black Lagoon episodes. And I'm curious as to what was going on with the Vietnam scene at the start.
Still, it's a fun watch for the sheer over-the-top factor. Semi-loli maid levelling a bar during a fight? I'm in.

Outfox -you'd understand the significance of the Vietnam scene if you'd read the manga arc the OVA is based on. Don't worry about it too much though, the later episodes will probably explain it.
Personally, I quite liked the first episode of the OVA aside from a few criticisms. The lighting and colour balance seemed a bit off in some parts and the bar fight scene was actually a little bit disappointing considering the source material and how good some of the previous animated fight scenes in the franchise have been. I also felt that Fabiola got a bit too much "air time" during part of it. Aside from that though, this episode was pretty good. So I think the next few episodes will be at least decent and hopefully great.
Okay, there is one more criticism I have... the OP. The original one was better than this remix, IMO.

Re: Thoughts of Summer 2010 Anime Titles
I had some time today, so I watched a couple shows that my brother downloaded that I didn't originally intend to watch.
Amagami SS (Episode One): I actually found this one ok rather than bad for the most part (the description of the series actually is kind of off the mark). I liked the artwork and some of the girls seem kind of interesting. The male lead isn't super impressive but he's better than many of his ilk. I also appreciated the relatively low amount of fan service, although I didn't like the fact that the male lead seemed to get a weird fantasy in his head after that girl he likes commented that she thought his little sister was cute and that she'd like to bathe with her. Would have been funnier if he'd started fantasizing about the girl he liked bathing and then had his little sister showing up in the fantasy ruin it.
The two biggest potential problems with this show are the possibility of the guy's little sister being an option (there are hints of this) and the fact that as interesting as some of these girls are, I have to wonder how well things will work when their storylines are all supposed to be focused on their relations with one particular guy (hopefully it won't come across like the guy is just going from girl to girl). I'll probably give the series a little longer to see where it goes.
Ookami-san (Episode One): This is rife with anime cliches, but unlike last season's Mayoi Neko Overrun it seems to have a decent amount of charm. It might make for a passable diversion for one season. I'll have to see how it holds up over the course of the season though (plus how it compares to some of the other shows that are airing). Also, the outfit the more aggressive of the two main girls wears is kind of ridiculous...
Hmmm... the stuff I've sampled so far seems a bit heavy on the "typical anime stuff" factor thus far. But then again considering what's airing this season...

I wouldn't worry about it becoming a problem - she's not mentioned as even a supporting character on the game's website.Piero wrote:The two biggest potential problems with this show are the possibility of the guy's little sister being an option (there are hints of this)

Shiki doesn't start until Thursday. Could be the only TV title I'd commit to this season if Occult Academy blows for me.

Right now I am thinking of just "going with what I know will work" and only watch Strike Witches 2 when it starts.
The first fansub of Seitokai Yakuindomo has hit the web, but I know I will just compare it to Seitokai no Ichizon and find it lacking as I did with Mayoi Neko Overunn! compared to Nyan Koi!.

Bah... I don't think I'm going to be watching much this season, sadly. Since I moved house I've been on a 3GB-per-month bandwidth limit, and as the univeristy network blocks torrenting, there's little opportunity to actually get hold of material. Which is a great pity, because there's a real good buzz about this summer with a lot of shows that I'm interested in.
Ah well. There's always YouTube and Crunchyroll...

Seitokai Yakuindomo ,just watched it,set in what used to be an all girl school, the first ever male students arrive, unfortunately the student council is of course all girls who have obviously led a somewhat sheltered life up to now and have formed some unusual perceptions of the male half of the species.
the unfortunate lead male character has to deal with these girls and as he is normal behave himself, going to school on the train having to hold his hands in the air to prevent any accusations for example !

Watching it now. Looks like your standard "ecchi comedy", except it's the girls who are perverts instead of the guys. It's based on a serialized manga, but the episode kind of played more like a 4-koma as it was broken up into multiple vignettes.
Surprisingly, there was no fan service, but it is absolutely packed with sexual innuendo so perhaps that is the fan service angle they are taking.
If they play it like Rosario + Vampire I shall stick around, but if it becomes more like Chu-bra!! I will probably drop it early.

Re: Thoughts of Summer 2010 Anime Titles
Seitokai Yakuindomo (Episode One): It didn't make me give up in disgust the way that some more fan service laden shows do, but it also seemed pretty lame and uninspired. The characters are pretty bland. Also the artwork, OP, and ED all seemed second rate. I think the student council president suddenly saying crude things out of the blue was supposed to be funny, but I didn't really find it very funny. And this is coming from a guy who liked a rather crude manga called High School Girls that was written primarily for the purpose of ripping stereotypes about girls who go to all girls schools being prim and proper to shreds.
Actually, one thing that I think seperate series like High School Girls and B Gata H Kei from this one is that for all that they may be pretty massively exaggerated, they do kind of feel like there's a grain of truth to them. Additionally, while many of their characters are kind of one note-ish, they manage to be a bit less obvious about it then this show is. They also seem to have more energy to them.
Of course it may be partly because of series like High School Girls and B Gata H Kei that this show doesn't work all that well for me. After those two series "this wallet is obviously not a girl's because it doesn't have a condom in it" doesn't seem like an assumption that should be made. Also, are the girls at this school really that sheltered? Surely some of them have like, you know, male siblings. For that matter a fair number of them should realistically have boyfriends from outside of their school. Admitedely many of the girls in High School Girls were not exactly experts on the male half of the species either, but still...

Re: Thoughts of Summer 2010 Anime Titles
Damnit it's early, but I'll give High School of the Dead episode 1 a review. I only meant to watch a little bit of it, but it seems that went down the drain.
To start off, the artwork is very good, in usual Madhouse fashion, and is very similar to the manga. In fact, the whole thing so far is a very faithful adaptation. The action is well-paced and awesome, as well as over the top in a cool way. The fanservice isn't too heavy so far, but it is there. I'd say it's more than most, but less than, say, Strike Witches. It's at a "gravy" level right now; it's not an annoyance, but rather a nice touch. It's slightly toned down from the original, I believe. It's very easy to get into, as I implied earlier, and it's just plain fun to watch! The OP ("High School of the Dead") and ED ("Them") are both pretty awesome, but they haven't become notable tunes, not yet at least. Finally, the voice acting, even though it's Japanese and I can't quite comment on the quality properly, is very solid. Notable voice actors include Junichi Suwabe (as the main character), who voiced Archer in Fate/Stay Night, a very good job might I add. There's also Eri Kitamura, known for Ami Kawashima in Toradora! and recently, Yui in Angel Beats! And, awesomely enough, Kouta Hirano the gun otaku is voiced by Nobuyuki Hiyama, the voice of Link in the Legend of Zelda games. He doesn't talk there, but his shouts brought smiles to many a gamer. So, all in all, it's an awesomely badass show so far. A great first showing, and I'll definitely continue watching it.
I highly recommend it, especially if you're a fan of GARcher or the original manga.

I think you're being a bit harsh on the show, Piero. While it pretty obviously wears its 4-koma strip origins on its sleeve (what with one character being introduced three times in the same episode), I thought it fair enough. It's bright, colorful and energetic with good art and animation (whereas even HSotD cheated a bit with CGI and some long stills), and the OP/ED are both lovely. It's not laugh-a-minute, but it's pleasant to look at, and the quickfire pace means that even the flat jokes are drained away quickly and don't have time to go sour.
