Don't get your hopes too high. That manga's from Tokyopop's German company. The manga's still unlicensed in America.

Well you'd all best go out and buy it, because with TP's finances, I don't think they'll support it if it doesn't sell well.

Of the few sets of titles I have from Tokyopop for manga, nothing was edited when I compared it to scanlations and raws found online. They even kept Japanese cultural references intact, an especially notable feature being the honorific suffixes.

Yeah, they ripped Vampire Game to pieces too. They just covered up the text that wasn't in bubbles and the translation was horrible. I felt I was reading an American comic. I sure hope TP doesn't license Elfen Lied for the US - I don't want to see another good series get ruined.Nuke is Good wrote:Tokyopop sorta....mauls mangas. I own three Full Metal Panic light novels that were released by Tokyopop. I don't remember the second and third so well, but I remember I felt the first one could used better editing. It was rather rough.
Del Ray seems to be a good company for manga.
On another note, just a warning... I haven't seen or read either the Elfen Lied anime or manga, but word has it that for all the anime's notoriety, the manga is a lot more graphic.

I know. I read Elfen Lied on a site that translates manga into English and some of the stuff in the manga made me go O_o

Because they in a non-neutral way - the characters, especially the main girl character, spoke in heavy American slang. I couldn't hear the author's voice in it at all.Thanatos wrote:Hum...why?I felt I was reading an American comic.

In terms of violence and sex, the anime and manga are on par with each other though some scenes were lost in the manga to anime transition. The manga had the timing of specific events placed differently or situations were depicted differently between the anime and manga. Here are some examples:
- Spoiler:
- -While Lucy's battle with Nana took place in a graveyard in the anime, it took place in a forest in the manga.
-Nana was given her prosthetic limbs before she was put to sleep by Kurama in the manga.
-The manga introduced a character named Nozomi where the plot to the series would have been at the anime's sixth to seventh episode. Nozomi was a friend of Yuka's who suffers from a bladder control problem triggered psychologically thanks to her physically abusive father putting pressure on her to sing. As a result, Nozomi wears diapers.
-Instead of one of the scientists at the institution causing Mariko to explode from the bombs implanted in her body in the anime, the manga features Lucy destroying the detonator to the bombs causing them to trigger a countdown. Mariko attempts to kill Lucy in the explosion with her, but to no avail. Kurama isn't killed with his daughter during this event in the manga.

- Spoiler:
- Yep. Nyuu fondled the girls more often in the manga than the anime. When she fondled Nozomi's crotch, it earned her a whack to the head from Kouta for obvious reasons.

Re: Elfen Lied fans rejoice!
This was probably the first manga I ever finished and I always wanted to support it, but not speaking japanesse made me feel that it really wouldn't be as satisfying if I couldn't read it.
As long as they don't butcher this really bad I will probably still buy it just to support it. I just hope it doesn't end up like battle royale, if you have seen the movie or better yet read the book then if you look at the American manga it is very different, like they actually change the plot type bad.
As long as they don't go in and try to change the plot then I will probably buy it.

GZ, I agree. When things get to this end in America, things get chopped up in the worst possible way. All I can do it hope.
But after reading the Online Fan translated version, I know the difference. Either way it goes, I will support this one, cause its worth having.

Re: Elfen Lied fans rejoice!
I don´t think they edited it... well in the first 2 volumes (which are in fact the first 4..the pluged two volumes in one book) everything that should be in it was in it... There was only a sticker which said "recommended for 18 years old (so I convinced Rico-Chan to buy it for me ^0^ )Triela wrote:Nuke is Good wrote:Tokyopop sorta....mauls mangas. Re: Elfen Lied fans rejoice!
I've seen quite a few things that Tokyopop has mauled in the editing process either by editing content, or in the opposite direction, horribly failing at the editing process. Spelling errors, inconsistent word use, grammar problems, and a particular problem that kept me from buying the rest of their mistitled Karin novel translations, misspelling the name of the titular Karin.
This, along with their inability to release titles they say they will, like Fruits Basket Ultimate Edition volume 4+ and the rest of the Full Metal Panic novels, and NOT actually dropping the title, thereby preventing another, better company from pick it up (Though I don't see anyone saving the Ultimate Editions), has pushed me to an almost boycott level.
The only thing I've bought from them in a long while is Future Diary, and only because it's that freaking awesome that I just have to. I suspect Elfen Lied would be the same way if it were to come here, though I'd still perfer Del Rey or Yen Press get it instead.

I think it's the first time you've hooked me on a series, but I try to avoid adding more to my list until I finish the ones already in the queue. But Future Diary was just too awesome - I'm already caught up with the latest chapter.
