what should we do about the banner?
Sorry Whatface, but...
I think the flash banner needs to go. Every time I maximise a window with that in it my CPU usage jumps from nearly 0 to 30-50%. It's probably part of the reason my laptop has been overheating so frequently today.

wow... we might just need to make an alternate no flash version of the site for low bandwidth/old Intel CPU users.

Re: Sorry Whatface, but...
Actually, it seems not to cause that jump if I scroll down enough so that the banner is not visible in the browser window, but I still think it's contributed to why my laptop's overheating problem went from 'a few times over a period of months' to 'something like eight times a day' today...
It may partly be a problem with my laptop, as the thing should NOT be overheating under the conditions it is (it's a dual core system that's about a year old) but that banner is not helping... I've had more cases of my laptop overheating today then in several months previously.

This is my laptop's processor... it's not a Pentium 4, though it is an Intel.

I've been advised by Kiskaloo and my brother that I should try blowing some air through the system to try clearing out dust that may have gotten into it.

Intel Centrino for me all the way. Should've taken the Centrion due though...
My laptop's fine. Is it really that laggy? It only overheats when I run Ghostbusters in here which...well, you get the point.

forgot they ditched the Pentium name... yeah, those ones.

we'll see what the public consensus is first, then have a discussion 'bout it. I figure if its screwing up people's computers, we should probably bring it down until we figure out how to make a low-bandwidth version of the site (unless someone knows a way Piero can disable the flash player just for this site)

Ok, I updated the blasted banner again!
The Fart Button has a real purpose now. You can use it to turn off a bunch of the moving elements, if you think its CPU intensive or whatever. It saves your preference as well, so you don't have keep on turning it off every time the page is reloaded etc.

Re: Sorry Whatface, but...
Damn, but that banner really IS a resource hog. With nothing open but FireFox, when the banner is up both of my cores are in the upper-50% range. When I navigate to another page (so no banner), they drop to the mid-5% range.
My MacBook Pro has a Penryn-core 2.4GHz Core2 Duo Mobile.
Mind you, it doesn't seem to be stressing out my system, but still, a 10x increase in CPU power just to render a simple (no offense) Flash banner...
I'm not going to cast a vote, but I would not be against returning to a non-FLASH banner like the girls playing instruments.

Re: Sorry Whatface, but...
If the CPU drain is bothering anyone that much, with AdBlock, you can easily just block the banner image so that it doesn't appear at all. This solution does of course make the forum look kinda bland without a banner, but it will spare your computer from that extra load. It's also reversible so you can make the banner appear again if you so wish.
Through my testing, it went from about 40-50% with full animation. 15-20% with the power button clicked and the large animation gone. And 1-2% with the banner blocked completely.
Just a suggestion to those who are finding it a drain for their computers.

That's what I do. If I'm chatting at the chatroom I just block the banner.

I say keep it.
My PC laptop under Firefox will play it, but not IE.
Simillarly with my G4 under FireFox wont play it either... Not properly.
On those eystems- I get the background, and the Bact-vat, and a couple moving things, but the girls are missing.

trying it out on my desktop for the first time (laptop is now installing updates... I had to go back to Vista on it )... CPU usage jumps from 0-1% to the high 20s on my two-year-old 2.0GHz dual-core AMD.
the power/fart button puts it down around 5-7%

Flashiest banner I've seen on Cyborg Central since I've been here and it has given me no issues. I say let the banner stay and if anyone is having issues on their end with it, just block the banner if you have Firefox or use the power button Whatface provided.

Leave the flash. Its awesome.
and for those low end users: see the red button on the left side of the picture?
Click that and it will close a shutter over the animation reducing CPU usage by 30%
Also the banner seems to remember that you closed the shutter for that session. so in theory, you should only have to close it the first time you visit the page.
Hmmm... overheating problems eh?
Have you brought you laptop to a repair shop for internal hardware upkeep lately? Because there are other factors that causes your machine to over heat.
Between the CPU and the Heatsink, there is some Thermal-paste, it is best to replace this paste on a yearly basis.
Because frankly every machine on this planet needs regular upkeep and maintenance, A computer is no exception be it software or hardware wise.
