I need a job!
The thing is that my dad says i'm gonna have to move in and work with him starting next week. Does anyone know a job I can get into quick before my dad comes.
I've always wanted to be a video game director and have come up with lots of game ideas, but, I think Nintendo only hires people over 18. I don't think I have much chance of working for them right now, and even if I did get in they most likely wouldn't let me direct anything.
Even worse is that over there I wouldn't have any friends, internet, or happiness.

Re: I need a job!
As a minor, I would say your job options are limited. However, there's always the chance you can fall into something that fits perfectly for you. The best thing to do is simply start looking around for what's available. Also, in this current economy, job pickings are slim. Especially the "fun" jobs.
Good luck!

Re: I need a job!
I worked with him last summer and it sooo boring, and he only paid $50 a week. My friend works at taco bell and he gets paid way more than me, and I actually had to work from 7 to 5 everyday. He doesn't work that long and he gets days off.
Maybe I should look for a minimum wage job

Better than nothin' as I say. And gettin' paid $50/ week for full days is pretty close to that. Unless of course it's an official apprenticeship, then that stuff'll pay off later. Trust me.

...dude... ouch. Is it hard labor 7-5? 'cause he's probably breaking child labor laws.

okay, I guess they're not as restrictive in Cali as they are up here (when I was 16-17, they couldn't work me more than 30hrs/week and I was required to take a 10min break every hour... I thought it was BS at the time)... but he still needs to pay you minimum wage!4. WAGES
Minors must be paid at least the minimum wage and applicable overtime rates established by the California Industrial Welfare Commission [LC 1197, IWC Orders Section 4]. Employers who are subject to the federal Fair Labor Standards Act (and most are) must pay the applicable federal minimum wage and overtime rates [29 USC 206, 207, and 214]. Whenever state and federal wage standards differ, the higher wage must always be paid [LC 1182, 29 USC 218].

Re: I need a job!
I think my friend is paid around $200 every two weeks.
It would probably be more entertaining working with him, instead of doing a bunch of housework with my dad and uncles.
If I called something like that hard labor they might call me stupid(okay, maybe not stupid). My dad has done this work since he was a kid. My grandparents made my mom and her brothers and sister work in the fields, and she says that Grandpa was really mean to them.

ah. just housework? but... 10 hours a day? what, do they run a hotel?
...I was just worried 'cause I thought you might be in a situation like one of my friends was... his dad cuts and mills lumber, and he used to work 60+ hours a week for nothing more than room and board.

Re: I need a job!
I feel you on that one. I used to work in the fields with my grandparents until I was 6 and went to live with my folks(long story); but at least they let me keep most of the money I made.
In the form of a bonded savings account of course( I mean what's a 4-6 y/o going to do with more than $20 /week).
But truly work is work and money is money. There are thousands(if not millions) of ways to get it. You don't ned to work 'labor' to make a decent living. If I was in your situation, I would take the min. wage job, make more, and then give him $50/week out of spite. But then, that's just me.

Re: I need a job!
wowzerz 60+ hours!
By housework I mostly mean flooring people's houses, though for a while we worked on a big (I think Islamic) church school. We had to put tiles and stuff. They did something with the windows, but it would have been to dangerous for me since I don't know how to do anything.
And Boomer, I probably will have to give them a lot of money since we're not doing well right now, like a month or two ago we were living in a trailer park.

ugh. tiling and flooring isn't terribly hard work, but it's sure as hell boring. not a good business to be in right now, either. few people can afford to have their houses worked on the way things are goin'.

Re: I need a job!
I'm sorry to hear all this Hydra!
Work sucks... But I agree with boom boom. Money is money. And where unfortunately you can't really get fun jobs without being 18+ and on top of that have a college degree.
I personally, have never had a job I didn't love doing. (Except for the time I was mooning the audience... Exposing my naked ass which was underage at the time was not too fun.) But that's not the point. Point is, we gotta do what we gotta do. Everything happens for a reason. We learn from our experiences good or bad. We pick up the pieces and move on.

Re: I need a job!
OK well my plan is that i'll tell him that my friend's helping me get a job. That might keep dad away for a while, i hope. I'll tell him that a minimum wage will get me more money, so I can help out the family. Yeah, I think that'll work.
The next step would be to actually get a job. I don't want to work fast food, but I may have to.

Re: I need a job!
There's always retail, which is a step up from fast food, though not by much. At least you don't smell like fries at the end of the day as you're furiously trying to scrub oil off your acne-prone skin.
At 17, your job options are limited to:
1:a job that works you hard physically for minimum wage and sucks.
2:a job that you take a lot of crap in from people, pays minimum wage, and sucks.
3:A fun job with good pay and benefits, which doesn't actually exist.
My personal recommendation is to take the physical job, like at a farm or nursery, tending trees or a job that does other kinds of landscaping. They're usually looking for strong backs they can pay minimum wage to, and if you're good, you really can make a career out of it. The real benefit is the hard body you end up with from sweating your ass off in the sun and lifting bags of whatever umpteen times. I'm fat and lonely enough to know that chicks dig the hard-body types.
Not to mention that a job in which you take crap from people (especially in retail) is just a stress factory.
Whatever you end up doing, make sure you develop a good work ethic. Get the job done, do it quickly, do it well, and no one can say you're a slacker. That puts you a leg up on all the kids now that are vying for jobs that actually are slackers. In a tough economy, the only way to stay employed is to make yourself worth employing.
Good luck.

Re: I need a job!
strangely enough, at 17 I had a job with the school district, cataloging and updating computer systems... it paid a little more than minimum wage, and was mind-numbingly easy.
...but... those were the Y2K scare years. Any computer-literate kid could've gotten that one back then.

Unfortunately Maverick, I am one of those slackers, but I seriously think I would enjoy living the Harvest Moon life on a farm. I could take care of animals and veggies.
Can I just go to a farm and get the job just like that?

Re: I need a job!
In the US, to work for the post office requires going through a civil servant exam which has a 5 year waiting list in some areas.
One thing I would recommend is the US Census Buearu. Its about that time of the season where heads are needed to be counted and you can call them up for an application. The sooner the better. And if you get the job, its guarenteed work for at least 3 years.
