By the sounds of things they were just starting to run out of steam for the project/wanted to try something else so, rather than trying to push on half-heartedly or re-roster with those still enthusiastic, decided to call it a day while things were still fun and move on. Just back from three days in Abu Dhabi on a marketing trip with Etihad's first 787-9. Had a blast - stayed at the Viceroy Hotel on the F1 Circuit (on which I was able to drive the Ferrari 458 Speciale) and hung out at Ferrari World.

This is so flipping awesome!

The music and visuals pretty much perfectly sums up what made PMMM awesome.

So, I was looking around for music to get me in the mood for writing J+M's next chapter, and found a "Best of Jackie Chan" album on iTunes...

...it's pretty amazing.

Per the unassailable source Wikipedia, the tune is "On the General's Orders," but I've heard that tune referred by many names, with 'The Ballad of Wong Fei-Hung" being the one most easily recognizable.  It's probably HK MA cinema's version of the James Bond Theme: after three or four bars, you know the song.  The only question is which version out of the literally hundreds of versions recorded over the decades. 

There are at least 89 films about this character, with Jackie Chan himself in the lead role in the two "Young Master" films.  And, given the fact this is based on a real person (so there's no trademark issues, not that was even a speed bump in HK cinema...) he's likely appeared in a like number of HK TV MA soaps.

Jackie Chan realized that holding the record for "most stunts by a living actor" doesn't age well, so he's made a very graceful career change into the recording industry.  As many know, he grew up in the Peking Opera company, so it's not really surprising he is a very successful singer.  I find his linguist ability as varied as his acroabtics; he has recorded songs in Cantonese, Mandarin, Taiwanese, English, and Japanese.  

The video above has a lot of footage from Jet Li's Once Upon a Time in China (OUaTiC in some circles), but Jackie Chan is supplying the vocals, hence its listing.

Speaking of flying music.

For reasons, I had to go up to Townsville on the weekend, and for once the aeroplane matched my mode of dress...


Either way, the Sunday morning flight went rather well with some funky French Electro:


Which made the trip much better than any journey to Townsville really has right to be.

Have a long C-1 flight on Saturday and I think this one will be added to the music rotation.

My shortest 787 flight to date - all of 100 kilometers - between the Everett Delivery Center and Seattle-Tacoma International. 

It's rather common for our 747 and 777 freighters to be picked up at the EDC and flown directly to a West Coast airport to be loaded up with freight and go directly into revenue service. However, with our commercial birds, they're usually flown to the customer's home airport, first. But United decided they wanted to put this bird into revenue service immediately so they flew it to SEA, loaded it up with passengers and sent it on to San Francisco where it went into rotation on the San Francisco - Chengdu service.

For such a short flight, I went with an old favorite - Nigeru Mono, the opening theme to the late Satoshi Kon's Paprika.

When I have a spare hundred grand lying around, I want to hire the animation team to re-do the opening with Kara and GSG/Italy.

(Incidentally, one of the Crickets said in an interview how they looked into a name for their band by searching different kinds of insects as that was popular back then. They knew of a band which came before them named the Spiders, for instance and with a smile noted how they could have named themselves the Beetles! )

The music video is kinda strange and the anime that the song is the ED for - Punchline - sounds ridiculously stupid, but I have not heard such positive energy from a song since the glory days of ZONE.

Looks to me like a J-pop version of The Monkees.

This song has officially kicked off Halloween for me.

I bought this album before MP3 was a thing, I think, and wore it out and bought it again. This melancholy piece is one of my favorite tracks on it.


In my mind, it's an echo of the typical canon cyborg/handler relationship...

Almost all eastbound Trans-Atlantic flights depart in the evening so that the majority of the flight is overnight and allows it to land in the morning where passengers can connect to intra-European flights. East bound TATL delivery flights are no different, and all of my deliveries to Europe have been overnight ones.

You really feel the isolation on these flights - there are no lights below as you fly over the Canadian Arctic and then the ocean. My playlists tend to be full of melancholic piano music and my general mood on such flights tends to reflect that melancholy.

On my latest delivery flight, from the jumpseat on the flight deck I could see the navigation lights of at least a half dozen other planes entering the North Atlantic tracks to also make The Crossing, including a sister 787. This song seemed appropriate in the moment.
