Clips-Think of a clip...The kind you use to hold a chip bag closed or to hold your hair up. Well the ammunition clip is essentially that it "holds" Bullets in stead of chips or hair.
Mags- are boxes that hold bullets.....YES...THOSE THINGS THAT GO IN MOST PISTOLS!
the only pistols i can think of that take clips is the mauser.

heh. I also tire of the people who use them interchangably. I make every effort when I write to use the right one.

Eh. We often used the terms interchangeably in the military, so I tend to do so in my fiction.
I'll try and remember "magazine" going forward for the sake of accuracy.

Worse yet. I've heard people refer to magazines as 'cartridges'.

Heh. The Yankees, maybe, but when I was in the Army anyone who referred to a magazine as a 'clip' got one - round the ear!

I also get pissed off about this small fact.
Ok, you could say that the M1 Grand uses a cartridge, seeing as you don't strip the clip before you close the breach. But often when I am playing a game like Vietcong, people will say "I got 1 clip left." to which I would answer "What clips do you need? SKS or Mosin?" after which a resounding "eh?" ensues followed by A "Hello..? I am using an M16 here!"
Very annoying.

Yeah, I expect the Supply Officer would give me grief for mixing the two up.
I don't know why, but when I think of a magazine (be it pistol or rifle) I think of a "clip" and I know a number of ex-servicefolk who do the same.
Maybe it's because we've been out for so long and exposed to too much inaccurate Hollywood jargon in films and television that our memories have become warped.
I changed the terms in Chapter 7 of Yoake, but I don't feel like doing a search and replace on upwards of 50 documents and re-loading them all on fanfict.net. Perhaps when I come out with my consolidated edition, I'll take care of it then.

LOLZ, all this talk reminds me of a few stories my uncles brought back from Vietnam.
Although the guns more apparent were the Colt M-16 and AK-47, it wasn't uncommon to find an old Mosin Nagant, M3, or even a Sten. I'm guessing the Vietcong used whatever came they're way by way of whatever and left it lying on the ground when they ran out of bullets for it.
Well; their was this one commander they called Arsenal, because he picked up damn near everything he came across.Various firearms being no exception because you "Can't get these in America." They had encountered the infamous gun 'nutcase'.
My uncle David and Juan never told me exactly where, but they had gotten pinned down and were waiting for reinforcements; when Arsenal yells, "I need a clip!"
And someone answers, "Put that shit away, you can't even hit anything with your '16' at 20 meters! How in the hell are you going to 'split the trees'?"
Arsenal was using an M-16.
A gun nut story for sure, but it still puts a smile on my face.
