Godot's Art Empty Godot's Art

Post by Godot Tue 30 Dec 2008 - 15:26

As I have stated in my intro thread, I have done a lot of GSG fanart. As the series that inspired me to beginning drawing, it comprises most of my art. My art is not all that great, but I believe I put a lot of effort and soul into it so hopefully that counts for something  Very Happy
I'll upload various pieces of my work periodically, after I finish them up which will most likely be a very slow process knowing me.

Gathered here for your convenience are all the pictures featured in this thread. The latest one will be open. Click the spoiler tags to see the rest. I'll also place them in the posts I may or may not eventually make.

Latest ones first:

9/1/09 Fuuka Yamagishi from Persona 3
Spoiler:

8/11/09 Gin Ichimaru from Bleach
Spoiler:

7/1/09 It takes me a long time to post things I already have apparently Godot's Art 1371890812
Spoiler:

4/5/09: Henrietta (Im beginning to sense a pattern here) in a pose taken from Vera Misham from Apollo Justice.
Spoiler:

Henrietta-Hand drawn, colored with Corel Painter Essentials 3. Not really finished, but I thought it was good enough to post for now. Adding in lighting seemed to discolor certain areas for some reason.
Spoiler:

Henrietta - Hand drawn, then colored using a pen tablet and Corel Painter Essentials 3. Not so sure if I got the shadows right.
This is my newest draft with very obvious changes. I'm still not very good at coloring, apparently.
Spoiler:

Henrietta.
Spoiler:

Henrietta.
Spoiler:

This is all looking a lot more organized now, isn't it?

Yeah, I liked those too Very Happy
You're right, there are minor inaccuracies in the shadows on the first one, but nothing major.

As for resizing on photobucket, I have no idea why that happens, but here's two possible solutions.:
  • Use the [spoiler ] tag (get rid of the space in the middle). It'll mean that you don't have to worry so much about long loading times for the page, though it won't change the image size.
  • Use HTML tags (minus the full-stop - or 'period' if you're American Razz). You can use the tag like this:

No idea, I personally resize the images before I upload them. The size looks fine anyway.

Does that really work? I thought the images load inside the spoilers anyway?

    Post by Godot Mon 30 Mar 2009 - 1:31

Made some changes to the second one. Its much brighter now in terms of colors and the shadow has been removed (I have no idea how to do shadows anyway). Compare to the previous one with the link below it and tell me what you think of it.

Its been over 3 months since my last post here; sorry about that everyone Embarassed. Before I was overwhelmingly busy with schoolwork but I'm also just lazy in general. I promise I'll fix that and post/update/scan more frequently.

I should at least scan more frequently considering I have more than 40 pieces of (mostly bad) GSG fanart, but I always find myself never getting to it once I begin to finalize the work (and drift off to do something else). Again, I'll get at least 1 scan up very soon. Very Happy

Horray, a REAL update this time. I planned to post again the day after I made the previous post. This, of course, meant around a week later (on time, as usual Very Happy )
If you guys don't mind, I'd like to ask a bit of a format question: do you prefer that I continue updates like how I am now (edit my first post to include the picture, then post) or should I simply place the pictures in my post?
Also, see if you can guess the character I modeled the picture after (4/5/09). Very Happy A prize to whoever can guess correctly (maybe sweat )

Right now, I am not sure whether I should shade this, color this, or get to drawing something else entirely. I will definitely get around to posting more of my portfolio of art soon (really this time).
I have also decided to take TTIO's suggestion and post new pictures in posts as I make them while keeping the group of them also in an edited first post using spoiler tags. Thanks TTIO!

You should shade it. Just to tell you, shading is about shadows. I see you shaded the Henrietta pic in on the top, but it's more like you colored it in with pencil.

Here's an example. This is an older picture of mine, it's not perfect, but I'm too lazy to scan a new shaded pic in pencil right now. XD

On another note, whenever I try to use the eyedropper tool in Corel Painter Essentials 3 to select the color of some element in a screenshot I took of GSG, it always ends up as a slightly different color than what I selected. Does anyone know what to do about this? I'm not very experienced with these sort of things.

I don't use Painter, but I've had similar experiences with Photoshop. You might find that the colour itself is actually the same. The thing is, how the picture as a whole is coloured can have an impact on how you percieve that tone you picked out. Gets particularly noticeable with skin tones. Hard to explain but, for example if you take a colour out of a picture that employs a mostly warm colour pallette (From memory GSG uses a fairly warm colour scheme) and put it onto a white page or into a cold colour scheme, then it'll look different simply because it no longer has those other warm colours around to balance ot. Hence it looks warmer or more orange than it did in its original context.

Personally I've given in trying to use the picker... or if I do use it then only employ it as a starting point, then vary the colour tone depending on what I'm trying to do.

Yeah, I figured as much about the whole context notion Sad I'm unfamiliar with how you describe the colors as warm and cold though (to prove how little I know about what I'm doing Godot's Art 61015 ) which I find interesting. So does warm generally mean more red-ish/orange-ish?
Also, does this mean that if every color I use is lifted from some particular frame in the anime that the colors should look perfectly fine?

Yeah, "Warm" colours cover your reds, oranges, yellows... and "Warm neutrals" such as browns, beiges and "warm greys". Cool colours are your blues etc. One thing that I find useful to help keep everything about right is to lay down a base colour over the whole picture first, either warm or cool (think about what colour light you might be using) and use that to judge your colours off.

Don't know about using every colour off a particular frame, though I don't see why it shouldn't work. Personally if I'm using frames for colours I'd just use the picked colour as a guide and adjust it to suit what I was doing. As a side note: desaturating a warm colour will make it appear cooler and vice versa.

Personally I tend to use warm colour pallettes and will often enhance that in post production by laying a slight warming filter over the whole piece.

Third, what the hell happened to The Gallery? I really looked forward to seeing some good pieces here. In part hoping they might motivate my lazy ass to do something. We're only getting a small trickle of art now, even less or none if you're only counting GSG stuff, while it was more like a flood before. There's a lot of good talent that's much better than mine going to waste here.

To answer the second question first: of course we want to see more of your art.

To answer the other two: well I can't speak for everyone else, but I know why I'm not posting in The Gallery much: it's simply that I've been concentrating on Jethro and Monty so most-all my work's ending up in the "OC Characters > Artwork" section. That and I started with a comic which I've discovered is a whole lot more effort than I originally envisaged. That's actually pretty good there!

In fact you should draw the following:

Mikuru: Triela-san! What happened to you?!

Triela: Run, Mikuru, before they get you too!

Mikuru *looks confused* Before who gets me?

Evil Japanese Anime Excecutive (EJAE): Mwhahahaha! Before I take your second season and ruin it!

    Mikuru *looks frightened* NYAAAAAA!!!!

EJAE: Mwhahahahaha! I'm going to slip in your second season into first season reruns unannounced! I'm going to make you repeat the same episode EIGHT TIMES! And I'm going to replace all of you with the cast of K-On!

Yui *being forced to wear a Haruhi wig, visibly crying* I want to go home now!

Well it's only been... 1 year since my last image post?! Damn. I'm a lot lazier than I thought, and that's saying something. Better late than never though right?

To try and make up for it, here's 2 pics this time. That averages out to 1 post/6 months which is... still pretty bad.

I love Henrietta's thoughtful, pleased expression.

Also, you can see a very definite advance in skill and comfort with your abilities, through the progression of the drawings. Keep up the great work!

Anyways I like the Mila one! but how do you make your bang line look like that? I know they are pretty simple but when the ones I draw end up looking like saw blades :S (Probably due to me being around saw blades often).

This reminds me that Its also been a while since my hands had seriously mated letter B Rotring Graphite and some A4 Paper.

DAMN it's been over a year since my last update? I know I'm hopelessly lazy, but this is ridiculous. And what happened to the fanart around here? It's practically slowed to a stop, especially in terms of GSG artwork. It's kind of depressing, thinking about it.

Seeing this, I immediately (1-2 weeks) got back to drawing something. Hooray! Godot's Art 7278

Anyone ever play the indie game Recettear? That's what I'm working on and it'd be nice to know that I'm not the only one who has before I post anything Godot's Art 684325

Sorry it took another week to finally scan the thing I'm working on. I also hope nobody minds if its still a work-in-progress Godot's Art 684325

Thanks! I'm also really pleased with how those two turned out. The later one was a good example of the admittedly slow progress I've made over the years.
The second from the bottom though is one I actually did much earlier before I had much practice at all surprisingly. I'm still surprised how that turned out to be one of my best, years later. Might say something about a lack of progress though Godot's Art 684325 .
I'd like to touch that one up one day and darken the lines a bit.
