Re: Bookstore
I've been reading Steven Erikson's "Malazan Book of the Fallen" series. I'm almost done wtih book 7 ("Reaper's Gale"). Since the next book in the series won't be out until the Fall, I'll probably start reading the first Vampire Hunter D novel next.
I tried reading "The Men Who Stare at Goats" (a supposedly true account of military and intelligence groups studying psychic and supernatural powers to see whether they could be used by said groups). I shelved it after 40 or so pages.
I like anything that Carolly Erickson and Barbara Tuchman have written (very readible history books and historical novels).

...Still reading the Bourne Trilogy, and I spend a day reading whenever a new one of those tiny Star Wars novels comes out...
as for ongoing series' other than Star Wars, though... I'm waiting on the next installments of these:
-George R. R. Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire"
-Raymond E. Feist's "Darkwar"
-Greg Keyes' "The Kingdoms of Thorn and Bone"
-Elizabeth Haydon's "Symphony of the Ages"
a couple other favorites- one of which is completed, and the other's author died... :crying:
-Robert Jordan's "Wheel of Time"
-Terry Goodkind's "Sword of Truth"

Re: Bookstore
Books...?
Lets see...
1. The Bridge at Remagen
2. Flag of Our Fathers
3. Shakespear's Hamlet
4. The Great Gatsby
5. Things Fall Apart
6. Heart of Darkness
7. Annie John
8. The Village
9. The Walking Dead
10. All Quiet in the Western Front
....and that's about it. Those are the books I've read (and finished). The no. 1 is the book I'm currently finishing. Still, I can recall some of the stuff in the book. I love Heart of Darkness...its so dark and morbid--and rather racist to some extent; well, British in the 1500s and their expedition to Africa and all. Its really awesome as it plays around with your feelings. Kurtz' last words is awesome:
"The Horror! The Horror!"
Things Fall Apart is also good. Usually in most books, the westerners were portrayed as the good guys, the missionaries and all. But Things Fall Apart, from the eyes of the local African tribe, they were 'demons' who destroyed their culture. Fascinating!
Hamlet's language prevents me from enjoying it further, but I need it for IB and the feel of a good drama and tragedy is what I need.
Flags of Our Fathers is good. Accounts of those who raised the flag in my homeland, Japan in Iwo Jima. Its a sad tale, really...as some of the guys who were stamped as heros went into the wrong direction...
The Village and The Walking Dead is all about Vietnam. All about a platoon (different platoons in different books) tasked in Vietnam for all sorts of operation. The Village, of course, is about defending a hamlet from VC. There's one scene where a group of Marine (supposedly to ambush an NVA group) waits for the call of his comrades for the go code--only to find his friend is fast asleep. He THOUGHT he saw his friend walking pass him earlier, but the next morning he figured it was the NVA.
...now I could give 10 book reviews (habit), but I think I'll stop here. Read them for yourself!
...oh yeah, All Quiet in the Western Front is good...

I'm currently not reading anything (read most of the good stuff in my house, and I need to get a new library card which I can't be bothered to do) but I was in the middle of Lord of the Rings. Got bored though, and I stopped.
My reccomendations:
In order, worst to best (those are my top 3 books).
My reccomendations:
- The Sharpe series by Bernard Cornwell
- Lady of the Trillium by Marion Zimmer Bradley
- The Meq by Steve Cash

Re: Bookstore
"Wickedly funny"? The write-up for The Walking Dead didn't seem to be quite like that. I may have to pick up a copy to read. A number of reviewers on amazon.com seem to think that the book is actually fiction, since there seems to be a lot of historical inaccuracies. I wonder what the truth is.....
One of the best military memoirs that I've ever read was Forgotten Soldier, by Guy Sajer, a German soldier who served on the Russian front in WWII. It, too, has come under fire over the years for possibly being fiction.

Re: Bookstore
I've seen the feedback people have left for The Walking Dead on Amazon.com, and can confirm that they really miss the point. They complain that some incidents in the book may seem too hilarious or incredible to be true (especially the dialogue), but the fact remains that truth is often stranger than fiction, and that Craig Roberts is a bona fide, decorated war hero. The likelihood of him being a fabricator is vastly diminished by the fact that he is very quick to point out incidences of him goofing up (instances where he tries and fails miserably at killing the enemy, for instance) - an outright liar, in my opinion, would be prone to touting his own achievements while covering up his weaknesses. Most likely, his narrative is a mixture of truth and several completely harmless embellishments. At any rate, he has given us a fascinating read that will definitely leave you entertained.

Re: Bookstore
*seconds Nacht's point*
I mean, in the field of war strange things do happen. I find it realistic enough and have to say that those who have never been dropped in combat zone (or been in one) shouldn't say its unrealistic because of the humor.
Because in a field of fire, humor is the only thing that can keep you relaxed and keeps your aim straight!

I've been familiar with Hugh Laurie ever since he acted on Blackadder, and think he's a brilliant actor and author (his current work on House M.D. really shows how much he's changed over the years - a total departure from the silly characters he's normally known for playing). That book title is one I'll be keeping in mind.

Wow.. I haven't typed in the forum for ages.. Anyway, here's my list:
Maximum Ride by James Patterson (I'm currently reading the second book now)
Capacity by Tony Ballantyne (I can't locate the first and last installment for this here in my country.. :crying: )
The Fledgling of Az Gabrielson by Jay Amory
and I'm re-reading Half-blood Prince.
What's "The Gunseller" about btw? The fact that it's written by Hugh Laurie is enough to pique my interest. I'll also take note of the other titles mentioned here, I haven't been reading that much lately, better to make up for it now. *rushes to the nearest bookstore* :yaay:

I don't know why, but I can't help but think Maximum Ride to be one of the most bizarre things I've ever been exposed to. Not that I'm of the opinion that it's a bad story - it's just... weird.

His name is long. Thomas Lang. He is a so-called security adviser,
knows that with modern weapons and techniques from melee, but not with
women. And specifically in such love it when it into an international
affair of drugs and arms trafficking.
Here´s the discription from the Book´s back

I know. I know that most of you dont understand German, hence i allways make a Translation wrapped in a quote. that way, when I write in German, Rico-Chan has an easier time understanding me, while you guys still get to know whats going on.

Re: Bookstore
I would also (now) reccomend Time Dancers, which is the sequel to The Meq. I started reading it not to long ago, and it is superb so far
It's one of those books where at the beginning of a chapter, you have a quote, or an anecdote (of the characters), or something like that. One of these:
TXAPEL (Beret)
"A man on a train once told me the tale of a chieftain who was far from home on a perilous mission for his tribe. He came to a pass in the mountains with which he was unfamiliar. He knew there was no going back and his time was limited. False routes with bandits waiting in ambush lay ahead. Sitting on opposite sides of the trail at the head of the pass were two men about the same age. Physically, there seemed to be no difference between them, except that one was wearing a beret and the other was not. Both claimed to kno the true and only safe way through the pass. The chieftain knoew that if he chose the wrong guide, his mission would certainly fail and he would likely be robbed, beaten, or killed. Not a single soul from his tribe would ever learn his fate. To the chieftain, there was but one choice. Laughing out loud, and without hesitation, he chose the man in the beret to be his guide. Why? Simply because a man in a beret will always have more to offer than a man without. If the "truth" is unknowable, he believed, then one should enjoy the journey, regardless of the outcome.
"What became of the chieftain?" I asked.
The man on the train turned his head toward the window and gazed out at the passing fields and farms. "No one knows," he said quietly."
Why? Re: Bookstore
Oh! Anyone here reads Narnia (the series like 'The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe, etc.)
I only managed to get a hand on the 2nd book. I'd love to get the 1st and the third...

Re: Bookstore
It's been well over 20 years since I read the Narnia books, so my memory of them isn't that sharp. I thought that they were ok reading but they aren't anything that I would bother reading again.
Now, if I could find my copies of Glen Cook's "The Black Company", I'd read those again. "The Black Company" is professional mercenary group for hire -- one that has a long history. The story is narrated by the company's archivist (Croaker). There's some interesting personalities in the company (which is what makes the book so enjoyable).

Re: Bookstore
Narnia was a fairly fine series. But man, I never expected it to end the way it did.
