Used to do it all the time... in middle school, I used to read in lieu of paying attention in class.Danjo3 wrote:Here’s a question. How many books have you read in one sitting? That is, straight through, non-stop?
So, for a direct answer...
I'm not sure. Most of the Pern series, some other young adult fantasy series involving the reverse of various fairy tales (can't remember the names, but I think the female lead's name was Cimerene, or something)... some book they made me read that was about a catholic missionary/doctor somewhere in South America (which was boring, but mercifully short... the book report I wrote was more of a scathing critique)... those are just what I remember distinctly... there were a bunch more... mostly sci fi or fantasy.
Haven't read anything of substance in a single sitting since 1996, though.
Triela wrote:...not all American animation tv shows are bad. Some are just meant to be funny. I just love Family Guy and the simplicity of the character models. I guess that's an element that makes it so hilarious. ^o^
Cartoon Network stuff on the other hand is mostly trash. Everything is so poorly done. >_<

If you are referring to Avatar: The Last Airbender, then to quote Worf "I would kill you where you stand" because that was, hands-down, one of the best animated shows I've seen in a very long time.

I haven't seen the amount of anime that many of you have, so I may have been lucky so far (given the small statistical population size) but of the 10 anime TV series that I have watched on DVD, I liked the English dub for all but one series (Sister Princess) (...ones that I liked: Le Chevalier D'Eon, Cowboy Bebop, Gankutsuou, Gunslinger Girl, Kino's Journey, Paranoia Agent, Serial Experiments Lain, Trigun and You/re Under Arrest...).

A great dub was Ghost Stories (origionally Gakkou no Kaiden) instead of translating the series that was kinda bad they flipped it upside down and created their own lines and the story changed completely from scary series(that was kinda bad) to a funny ass comedy.

Books: y'know, novels and such.
This thread is for talk about works of fiction that come in novel form. The sort of thing that many of us read during our idle time in place of comics. Your own mind can often be a better artist than any mangaka.
Anyway, the books that prompted me to make this
Thus far (haven't finished the first book quite yet), I've found the series to have all the prime ingredients for a great story. Engaging characters, tragedy built upon tragedy happening to said characters, a war story following the lucky few in a fight where the unlucky many are cut down right next to them in scene after scene, and a believable world built around reality with a few outlandish concepts applied.
associated tropes:
The Quisling (traitors working for the invaders in exchange for promises)
the author doesn't rename these at all. makes perfect sense just to use the name, since the trope is a historical example and the books are set on a near-future Earth.
The Eternal Churchill (the protagonists being so horribly outgunned that their situation looks completely hopeless)
he lays this one on pretty thick, though not the way most 'alien invasion' stories do. No faster-than-light spaceships, energy shields or laserguns in this one. We're outgunned on a much more basic, primal level.
Our Vampires Are Different (...They're no Dracula, but at least they don't fucking sparkle)
these "vampires" meld a few concepts from horror, fantasy and sci-fi into something refreshingly mortal while keeping 'em so far above humanity that they seem invincible at first glance.
To quote the ironic last words of one of them: "You got one thing right, foodling. I am a god!"
Also, they explain the zombie phenomenon. One of the most common yet bone-chilling tools of the alien invaders is human beings infected with what the survivors have dubbed the 'Raving Madness'. Works pretty much exactly like a classic zombie flick virus.
and now for a little philosophy (with some spoilers cut):
...E.E. Knight wrote:What is needed of you, and what you can give me if you are true to yourself, is an outlet for your hatred. Hatred makes for good killers. The word is anathema; your religions discourage it because it makes poor mortar for a society. But... your race is being eaten. You should be consumed by hate; your every breath should be drawn to curse your enemies. It gives you energy and purpose and determination that only love matches. The more you love your fellow man, the more you should be aflame with hatred for your foe. Your culture is so full of the image of the reluctant warrior that it is an archetype. The man who kills regretfully, who goes into battle terrified but gets the job done and then shows mercy to his enemy afterwards. That kind of man will keep... (your people) ...upright for a while. But he will not win the war. Not against this enemy.
There is a beast in you that I'm going to help you release. If you agree, that is.I give fair warning, though. It means a vicious life and perhaps a hard end. You will live only to kill our enemies until you yourself are slain. Few of my warriors retire to marry... ...So if you want a role inside the human family, you can serve with honor in the Guards, living up to the image of noble crusader, or go back into hiding. There are many ways to do the right thing. Stay with us, though, and you will become the thing the enemy fears in the night. The prey will become the predator.
..
.
so, as another author describes it: "[if] the Red Badge of Courage had been written by H.P. Lovecraft..."
So basically this is survival horror meets spec-ops antihero badassery.
another quote:
E.E. Knight wrote:Ever drunk water out of a hoof-print to wash down a couple handfuls of ground-up ants? Slept outside in the rain without even a tent? Worn the same shirt for a month straight? It really stinks, son. And I don't just mean the shirt.

Re: Bookstore
I'd like to recommend the collected works of the sci-fi writer John Scalzi, of which I read back-to-back, one book a day, over a one-week period (I found them that good).
My first recommendation is Agent to the Stars. His first work (but second published), it's about a new alien race that looks like Jell-o and smells like old gym socks who hire a Hollywood talent agency and PR firm to help prepare humanity for their arrival. It deftly shows off his sense of humor and wit, both of which I found awesome.
If you don't find his sense of humor and wit funny, stop right there.
But if you do, then move to The Android's Dream. This is his latest work, and covers the journey of ex-soldier and State Department employee Harry Creek in his work to acquire a sheep of the Android's Dream breed for the coronation ceremony of the Nidu.
If you like that one, as well, then there is a four-part series starting with Old Man's War in which 75-year-old citizens of Earth are recruited to join the defense forces of human colonies in space.

Re: Bookstore
One book that has a prominent position in the Frazer Canon is James Clavell's Noble House.
The best stories are those that not only could have happened, but should have happened, and Clavell in his renowned Asian Saga wove a generational epic which I yearn to be the truth.
While the first novel in the Saga, King Rat, was famously written by Clavell as a means of rationalising his sufferings as a PoW in the notorious Changi prison, there's much more to the Asian saga than war reminiscences and it takes in the full grand scope of the East across two tumultuous centuries in meticulous - and emotive - detail, crystallising around four books which detail the desperate travails and heroic struggles of Struan's Trading Company - the greatest of all the European merchant houses in the East (albeit a greatness always poisoned on a knife-edge) and the "Noble House" of the title.
The novel is phenomenally large - clocking in at over 1200 pages, I think that it even outdoes War and Peace - but trust me when I say that there is not a single paragraph of filler throughout all of them. The passion, intensity and concrentration of the book is incredible - not only for its acute and vivid depiction of the setting (1960s Hong Kong), but for the sheer density of plot and thoroughness of characterisation. Half a dozen separate paths of conflict and competition run and intersect throughout the book, with numerous sub-plots threaded around them, and with masterful steersmanship Clavell never once loses his hand on the tiller. He was pouring his soul into this.
The characters that he navigates around are rendered in unstinting detail - you might say bordering on the obsessive. Even minor characters only relevant for a single chapter will have long tracts dedicated to their hopes, fears and challenges, but they never bore, particularly given the fascinatingly frank display of radically different Eastern mindsets. In the meantime, whenever the main characters square up to a crisis I am left powerfully resonating with the tempests that rage over them. Clavell's command of sometimes-bewildering concepts is also stong - the vigorous stock markets of Hong Kong provide some fascinating introspections into the operations of the money market - and in the midst of that he ties in hostile takeovers, an economic seesaw of collapse and recovery, natural disaster, heresy & tradition, mafia infiltration, love, hate, treason, intrigue, and even a day at the races. Hong Kong is depicted as the confluence of power in the consciously-capitalised East, and with a veritable Charybdis of secret plots swirling in the streets you could well believe it.
Those of leftist politics may have their faith tested over the course of the book - Clavell pulls no punches when pummeling such beliefs to a pulp - but as for myself, I booed with the rest of the crowd whenever the evil and hypocritical Labour MP waddled onto the stage.
Pretty much the only criticism that I could level at Noble House is that there's a flash of a Mary Sue in Clavell inserting a fictionalised version of himself into the book, albeit only as a secondary character. Also, while he's vivid in his characterisation, that doesn't mean that he's even-handed - you're left in no doubt who the villains clearly are, although it's a matter of personal opinion whether that's a bad thing or not. As literature, the book's immaculate.

I read these books a long time ago, but their the only books i've picked up that I liked.
Flipped is a story about a boy that hates being stalked by the neighbor girl. It's a romantic comedy that tells the story from both of their perspectives.^_^
Poppy is about a mouse that goes an quest. I read this in 6th grade so I can't really remember much except that I liked it.
Rockstar Superstar is about a teen guitarist that wants to make it big. The band he joins goes on tour, so he'll have to try to resist the temptations that he and his new gf fear. I read this one in high school.
These books are pretty short with Rockstar being the longest.
I hope you guys like them too.

I've seen that book.
Seattle recently had their "Zombie Walk". They were gunning for the world record with around 5000 folks, but I am not sure if they broke it.
If you want to read something that is truly evil, may I suggest Warren Ellis' Crooked Little Vein.
He released it at the 2007 San Diego Comic Con and I picked it up, read through it in one night straight, and went back downstairs to shake his hand. It is one of the most hilarious, yet disturbing pieces of prose I have ever come across.
NOT for the feint of heart or the easily-offended.

Has anyone played a 'Choose Your Own Adventure Gamebook' Before?
I'd recently downloaded the Fabled Lands App (Basically an application that has all the published Fabled Lands Gamebooks in digital format), and have been taking a walk down nostalgia lane. My, how I miss those days of my youth. Pen, paper, eraser and gamebook... no need for a 4GB of RAM and a monster graphics card the size of my fist.
I know pen and paper RPGs are still going, but I wish tpeople still wrote and published these things.

Allow me to give you a brief passage that finally made me realize I was reading perhaps the most ridiculously awesome thing in history.Yes, that's right. Jane Austen's Victorian England with swordplay, a look into 18th century manners, flesh eating zombies, and ninjas. NINJAS!As Lady Catherine rose to signal the beginning of the match, Elizabeth, in a show of defiance, blindfolded herself. "My dear girl," said her ladyship, "I suggest you take this contest seriously. My ninjas will show you no mercy."
I happen to be reading the same thing. xD I was with my friends, saw it, HAD to buy it after I read a chapter. 8D

Re: Bookstore
Just got finished reading this new book from Joe Abercrombie.
Best Served Cold
Inspired by the feudal era of 15th century Italy, it reminded me a lot of GSG.
The main character is mercenary named Benna Murcatto. She's a mercenary who has clawed her way to the top of her trade and that concerns her current employer.
It's a revenge story done in a very sadistic-noir kind of way. Damn it was a good read. Especially the vivid descriptiions of the action therein.

Re: Bookstore
Thanks to Rusty, he got me into the Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child novels. I bought Relic a few days ago and loved it. Maybe it's because the main character is a female graduate student working in a museum and there is a lot of scientific stuff mentioned. I don't really read many mystery thrillers, but this was a fun read throughout. From what I know I finished the book before him.
I'm currently reading the sequel, Reliquary, and while it is supposed to not be as good as the first one, I've read about a 1/4 of it and I like where it's going. If I'm still in the groove I'll probably read Cabinet of Curiosities next.

Ahah. I was just hankerin' to talk about books, and here's a topic of the ready-made variety!
Readin through it, I gotta tip my hat to the Best Served Cold recommendation. Dark, dark fantasy.
My favourite series of all time has gotta be A Song of Ice and Fire by George RR Martin, also mentioned.
It's visceral, it's detailed, it's beautiful, and it's sad.
It's a series that makes you care so much about the characters that it's possible you will physically hurl your book across the room when one of them dies. Or at least that's been my experience, hah. Because in Martin's world, the good guys don't always win.
The upcoming HBO series based on it seems promising
My cousin's told me EE Knight's books are awesome, I gotta look into em.
Right now I'm readin The Extremes by Christopher Priest. Strange book. It's about the blurring of the line that separates fantasy and reality. Perhaps one can become the other? Trippy.

Aye, but I hope many wouldn't want the reality of this book, since the problem is caused by people using virtual reality to experience shooting massacres.
Or more specifically, someone who's in the middle of a murderous rampage goes into a virtual reality room. When his rampage is recreated, it creates a reality within a reality or... something
Anyways, I've started The Inverted World by the same author.

Well hold on, do visual novels count?
Aside from those, I've been reading Scott Pilgrim (at the request of my friend) and I'm re-reading A Song of Ice and Fire. Hopefully by the time I'm done those (several thousand pages), the mean Mr. Martin will have finished the next book...

Re: Bookstore
Man, I was so excited for about ten seconds.
Sadly it's only a translation of the Honor books, not a manga.
Also, one of these days all the cover artists are going to sit down with David Weber, pull out the RMN manual of dress and actually learn what the damn uniform looks like.
Speaking of which, after a bit of a hiatus, I've picked up the series again from "Storm from the Shadows"... it's not doing much for my sleep quotient.

Re: Bookstore
I actually think I do. Aside from being quite a heavy/political series, the space combat would be quite difficult to do in a visual medium. Since it (almost) all happens beyond visual range, all you'd see would be a spaceship, hanging seemingly motionless in space with its wedge red-shifting the stars above and below it, with the occasional little flash as a bunch of laser-heads went off twenty kilo-clicks away. It's not impossible to make work, Starship Operators did a respectable job of it, but even they were engaging at vastly shorter ranges than the Honor ships do... especially since the advent of MDMs and Apollo.Awinnell wrote:Alfisti wrote:Man, I was so excited for about ten seconds.

It's also, lest face it: pretty nerdy combat. I'm positive David Weber spends most of his time crouched over a calculator rather than over a word processor keyboard
I love the series as much as the next space-geek, it has it's flaws, but the rest is so good I don't care... however I'm not sure how well it would translate to a visual medium, particularly where Mr. Weber can't let out the long, explanatory monologues

Re: Bookstore
Kind of reminds me of the combat in the comic Albedo and the Banner/Crest of the Stars anime. The ranges were so long (using drones) that combat was all pre-calculated by computers based on probabilities of where the capital ships would be when they popped out of warp. So the actual combat scenes in both were rare and far between because there was not much to see.

Re: Bookstore
Don't know Albedo, but from memory Banner/Crest when in warp the ships generated a sort of "normal space" field around themselves. Missiles didn't carry the generators to create those fields so were destroyed when they reached their limits and I think sensors were more limited outside as well?Kiskaloo wrote:Kind of reminds me of the combat in the comic Albedo and the Banner/Crest of the Stars anime. The Honor ships can engage each other in hyper, though it puts limitations on them, particularly if they happen to be travelling under Warhawski sail in a grav-wave. In normal space however, by the Second Havenite War, the limiting factor on missile range has pretty much become the light-speed communications lag across the control uplinks between the missiles and the ship which fired them. Anti-ship missiles do have limited onboard guidance, but work much better when able to be co-ordinated and stream targeting data from their mothership's much more powerful sensors and EW suite. So while they can theoretically shoot something 65 million clicks out, you'd be doing well to actually hit anything. Well...
- Spoiler:
- ...untill Apollo came along at least.
I'll be quiet now before I geek everywhere.

Nimitz will be CGI'd, possibly with the occasional puppetry going on, although I don't see him being too much of an issue. It looks as though Mr. Weber's going to be consulting with the crew on this A LOT, which is why he green-lit it - they are promising to treat the property with respect, and consult HEAVILY with him. Weber's big concern for a long time has been finding an appropriate actress to play Honor - how many 6'2" Eurasian actresses can you name? *grins*
As for the battles, they're obviously going to have to alter the perspective to make them watchable for the audience - although at least we're not going to have to sit through a maths lesson to get to the nitty-gritty!
I wonder how well it will continue on, though... Basilisk Station was the most tactical of the books (from a single ship perspective, I mean) - with Honor's increasing rank, and subsequent greater focus on strategy in lieu of tactics, the pace slows down more and more... great for story-telling, not so great for reaching the larger audience.
I just hope their return on investment is enough to keep the project going.

Did take a squiz at the group, finding a chapter local to me look like it may be difficult though.
Basalisk Station was probably the closest thing to the series' "Hornblower... IN SPACE" tag and yes, probably the most marketable. The other option would possibly be to go with the Saganami Island books, but there's a lot of history needed to get up to speed with those.
